Road safety takes a back seat in rally
Chandigarh, August 11
All caution was thrown to the wind in a car and bike rally organised by motor vehicle enthusiasts in collaboration with the Chandigarh Police to promote road safety in the city. The event started with stunts performed on bikes and cars at Sector 10 where daredevil drivers put their lives at risk by performing the stunts without wearing safety gear.

SSP pulls up DSP for providing misleading info

UT Deputy Superintendent of Police (South Division) Surjit Malik is in the dock for providing misleading and false information to a query under the RTI Act. In a scathing order, UT SSP Naunihal Singh, who is the appellate authority under the RTI Act, has reprimanded the DSP for providing misleading information and ordered him to supply correct and factual information pertaining to a case.

Railway station a picture of neglect

The portion of the city railway station falling on the Panchkula side is a picture of neglect. It has always got a "stepmotherly treatment" from the authorities. Although a number of proposals have been mooted by the authorities for this side, no project has seen the light of day.

Topographical gradient or slope of the city is towards southern sectors and these sectors are receiving canal water for drinking as well as secondary purposes and groundwater is not being exploited, resulting in the rise of water table due to natural recharge.

The last day of the Teej festival at Mani Majra’s Shivalik Garden saw folk dances presented by artistes from states like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana.

Two juveniles arrested for theft
Chandigarh, August 11
A day after a major theft was reported at a house in Ram Darbar, the police arrested two juveniles aged 16 and 17 years in the case. The breakthrough came following the inspection of footage obtained from a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera installed in a neighbouring house.

Man held for murder
Mohali, August 11
The police arrested Surinder Singh, an accused in murder case of Jai Singh, on Sunday. Jai Singh's highly decomposed body was recovered after 20 days of his murder on August 4 close to the Ansal Mega Project, near Chappar Chhiri village. According to the police, Surinder Singh was arrested from the Mohali bus stand. His accomplice, Satpal, who is a relative of Surinder Singh, is still on the run.

Road accident claims two lives
Zirakpur, August 11
Two persons lost their lives while another girl sustained serious injuries in an accident between a motorcycle and a Skoda car near Singhpura Chowk on the Ambala-Zirakpur highway today.

Two arrested for supplying duplicate Kurkure
Mohali, August 11
The Mohali police arrested two persons for supplying duplicate Kurkure snacks in the area and recovered around 10,000 packets of the eatables today. The accused have been identified as Parminder Kumar, a resident of Rajpura, who is an agent of the company manufacturing the duplicate product, and Jai Bhagwan, driver of the canter.

In a first look, the wall behind the targets at the 10-mt indoor shooting range of Markfed shooting range, Phase VI, seems to be decorated with a new texture wall paper, but if one goes by the reality, it was the dampness at the wall that made it look ugly.

Dhirili, Saanvi march ahead in badminton meet
Panchkula, August 11
Junior shuttlers Dhirili and Saanvi marched ahead in the girls’ (U-10) category of the ongoing 8th Ashwani Gupta Memorial District Badminton Championship being held at Tau Devi Lal Stadium here today. In the girls’ (U-10) qualifying matches, Dhirili defeated Deeya (31-22), while Saanvi beat Raiza Dhillon (31-3). In another matches, Anshu registered a 31-26 victory over Ananya, whereas Shivali trounced Manat (31-18). About 250 players are participating in this championship.
