Mystery gang keeps Kharar residents awake
Akash Ghai
Tribune News Service

Kharar, August 11
Residents of the town and nearby villages are forced to spend sleepless nights due to alleged rumours of some mysterious gang being active in the area. Rife rumours about the gang members chopping off the body parts of people after making forced entries in the houses during night hours are widespread.

The residents of the area are resorting to ‘theekri pehra’ (night vigil) so as to avoid any uncertain circumstances.

The police of the area termed all such news as mere rumours as no concrete evidence of any incident in this regard has been found.

“Some people used to claim that they have seen suspicious persons roaming in their area and suspected them as some mysterious gang members. Investigations made in this regard however proved nothing worthwhile. Undoubtedly, residents of the area are scared and some mischievous elements are frightening them further,” said RS Mrar, the DSP of the area.

Citing yesterday’s incident on the Randhawa road, DSP Mrar said, “When the police team went there nobody came forward to file any complaint.”

On the other hand, Amandeep Singh, a resident of a colony on Randhawa road, claimed that some persons had tried to break open the doors of his house two days ago. “We were scared and raised an alarm following which the miscreants fled away,” claimed Amandeep Singh.

He said yesterday also some miscreants came in the area. “We have started night vigil on our own now. The people on ‘theekre pehra’ challenged the miscreants, who then entered in a field and fled away. One of the residents also fired two gun shots in air to scare the miscreants,” said Jagjit Singh, a resident of the area.

The residents also alleged that the police was not taking the problem seriously. “When we informed the police yesterday, a police party came casually at the spot and did not show any interest to check the field or the area, where the gang members were seen fleeing away,” alleged the residents.

Mohali Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Darshan Singh Mann said he was aware of the ongoing problem. “Certainly, rumour mongers are behind spreading such news for mischief. On our part, we have intensified the night patrolling of the area and the staff is on a high alert. If people are resorted to ‘theekri pehra’, it’s their own wish otherwise we are just a call away,” said SP Mann.

Psychiatric viewpoint

Dr BS Chavan, a senior psychiatrist of the area and Head of the Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical College Hospital, Sector 32, said such rumuors were not new in our country. “In fact, the imaginary fear of ghosts and other such things is deep rooted somewhere in our minds since our childhood. So, we believe in all such baseless things like ‘bhoot’ (ghosts) and ‘Monkey-man’. Surely, some mischievous people are behind these rumours and they spread these for fun sake,” said Dr Chavan.

Our Correspondent

Fatehgarh Sahib, August 11
The Punjab Rice Millers’ Association has urged the Food and Civil Supply Minister and Commissioner to immediately release their 10 per cent securities lying with various procurement agencies from the past 6 years.

The paddy milling bills have been cleared and millers have submitted affidavits to the district heads of the procurement agencies regarding the payment of any type of recovery that arises.

Nakesh Jindal, press secretary of the association, said Tarsem Saini, national president, in a memorandum to the commissioner has mentioned that while finalising the bills of custom milling the state agencies at the district level can withheld 10 per cent security amount on the plea that gunny bags recovery charges have not been finalised, whereas the 60 per cent cost at custom milled rate is recovered from the millers, out of the gunnies left over after milling of paddy. The Food Corporation of India also follows the pattern of Punjab Government for the recovery of gunnies.

He has urged them to issue instructions to the state agencies not to withhold any amount out of security deposit at the time of finalising the custom milling charges bills and also to refund the withheld amount of the previous years. Chandigarh State Shooting Championship
Poor facilities for shooters
Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Mohali, August 11
In a first look, the wall behind the targets at the 10-mt indoor shooting range of Markfed shooting range, Phase VI, seems to be decorated with a new texture wall paper, but if one goes by the reality, it was the dampness at the wall that made it look ugly.

A visit to the Markfed shooting range has revealed that like previous years, it is waiting for a make over. The range is hosting the 38th Chandigarh State Shooting Championship due to non-availability of the Patiala Ki Rao shooting range in Sector 25.

"The shooting range is not available in Chandigarh, so we have shifted the venue. Now, to improve the infrastructure is in the hands of the local authorities (Markfed) as we have nothing to do with this," said GS Mangat, general secretary of the association.

Earlier, in 2009, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had announced an ultra-modern shooting range at Mohali.

"The only development was cutting of grass, which was done prior to the tournament. The shooting range is in a dire need of make over. The open range is becoming a hub of bugs and insects," said a shooter. Another shooter added,"The boundary wall of the shooting range touches the agricultural land, which is the main reason of dampness. The authorities should spend a good amount to upgrade the facilities here as it is the only range of the region," the shooter said.

Meanwhile, the Patiala Ki Rao shooting range, which was handed over to the Chandigarh police in 2001 by the UT Sports Department, is still under construction work. Earlier, in January, the 300-mt range was inaugurated by the Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil. However, the construction work on other range is still going on under the supervision of the Chandigarh police. The first deadline to complete the shooting range was October 31, 2011, which was further extended to November 30, 2011.Later, it was pushed to January 13, 2013.
