Fish sellers oppose market shifting to Kabadi Bazaar
Mayor suggests sealing of their shops
Kali Mandir Samiti threatens stir

Dehradun, February 27
The relocation issue of the fish market near Paltan Bazaar is becoming controversial now.

Fish sellers are not ready to move to Kabadi Bazaar near the ISBT. They are demanding new shops lying vacant in front of the Dehradun Municipal Corporation complex, which was refused by Mayor Vinod Chamoli.

The Mayor has suggested to seal the shops of the fish sellers in such scenario. On the other hand, members of the Kali Mandir Samiti, too, are hell-bent on shifting the fish market from the area close to the temple. The customers, who come to Paltan Bazaar, have to suffer the nauseating smell emanating from fish shops.

The demand for their relocation had been intensified by members of the Kali Mandir Samiti who recently sat on a dharna and were persuaded to suspend it by City Magistrate Harak Singh Rawat on the assurance that soon the fish sellers would be removed from the place.

Rawat, who had also been entrusted the task to find alternative land for the fish sellers in the city, came up with four options, Kabadi Market, Raipur Road, Defence Colony and the Dehradun Municipal Corporation complex (DMC) on Kanwali Road.

Mayor Vinod Chamoli advocated for Kabadi Market, saying, "There is no residential area around Kabadi Market. It has ample open space and close to the ISBT on the main road. The customers can easily approach the fish sellers whose business will also not be affected."

Anil Kumar, fish seller, said they would get sidelined if they were shifted to Kabadi Market. The customers would avoid going that far and would not buy fish from a place surrounded by scrap dealers. This would be a big setback for their business, he added.

Another fish seller Mahesh Kumar said they must be given shops in front of the DMC office which had been lying vacant for long time. Since the shops were located in the centre of the city and not far from Paltan Bazaar, they would not lose their customers.

Mayor Vinod Chamoli firmly rebuffed the idea saying that he could not shift fish sellers in the centre of the city once again and create hue and cry on it. Chamoli is also toying with the idea of shifting other meat sellers from Tehsil Crossing as well.

Rawat said some fish sellers were ready to shift only if other meat sellers also go along with them to Kabadi Market. He also said if the fish sellers were not shifted soon, then members of the Kali Mandir Samiti might sit on dharna again.

The Mayor has suggested to seal the shops. He said, "The fish sellers have been illegally running their business without licence for many years. The government is still trying to shift them but they are adamant and creating problems."

The purpose behind the sealing process is to arm twist the fish sellers so that they get ready to accept any place given to them by administration.
