Out of 97 CCTVs in Haridwar, 34 are not functioning
Haridwar, February 23 Currently in Haridwar there are a total of 97 CCTVs installed at various important points to keep round-the-clock vigil but shockingly out of these, 34 systems are lying defunct. This laxity of the Police Department may prove costly as terrorists and antisocial elements may take advantage to carry out their nefarious designs. These CCTV systems have been installed at prominent places like Braham Kund, Har-ki-Pauri, Mata Mansa Devi Temple, Mata Chandi Devi, railway station, bus station, important intersections such as Chandracharya Chowk,Rishikul-Malviya Chowk , Devpura Chowk and other sensitive/congested points. When Superintendent of City Police Kiran Lal Shah was questioned on this, he stated that the police was looking into this aspect and the concerned authority has been given directives to correct the fault or replace the defunct CCTV systems. Shah added that it had come to light that many of these CCTV systems don’t have higher resolutions and are fixed, which don't cover 360 degree angle of the area. At city control room tower where CCTV footages are viewed, another lacunae came to light... that of less storage capacity of recorded footage data base. Just a few weeks footage is stored in view of less data storage capacity as told by the personnel present at the
office. ASP Ajay Singh said that a proposal had been made for installation of new CCTV systems at congested bazaars, intersections and traders and other private institutions have been urged to instal these systems so that one can keep a tab on any antisocial movement. Meanwhile, bomb disposal squads conducted several impromptu checks at various places of the city, with world-famous Ganga Aarti at Braham Kund, Har-ki-Pauri, being given special security cover in the wake of the Hyderabad blasts. |
Rain, snow, hail lash Mussoorie
Mussoorie, February 23 The higher areas around Mussoorie such as Nag Tibba and Dhanaulti also experienced snow, rain and hail. The Met Department has attributed these rain to the western disturbances. The traffic was blocked due to the foggy condition here. The vehicular movement was also affected on the Mussoorie-Dhanaulti road due to heavy hail. The power and water supply had also remained disrupted at Dhanaulti for several hours due to intermittent rain. The schoolchildren found it difficult to reach their schools in such inclement weather and the strong winds were making it more difficult for them to walk. The chilly condition also claimed lives of many small birds in the area. According to member of the Winter Line Nature Trust Shantanu Sarkar, his team found grey-headed canary flycatcher, dark-sided flycatcher and white-browed fantail dead in the Rajaji National Park area. He further said the cold weather and snow forced some birds of rare species, including yellow-breasted greenfinch, rufous-breasted accentor, rufous sibia, white-capped bunting and blue-fronted redstart and fire-tailed sunbird, to come at the lower level in the hills and they were spotted in the valley. House sparrows are also in trouble due to the intense cold in Mussoorie. Meanwhile, the farmers from the adjacent region are delighted at this fresh spell of rain as it augurs well for the locally grown vegetables. Many farmers from Tuneta village were seen selling the fresh vegetables at nominal rates, much to the delight of local residents. The tourists were seen enjoying the view of the Doon valley basking under the sun although the moment was
shortlived. |
Rain spoils sewerage project work in Mussoorie
Mussoorie, February 23 The mud strewn over the Mall Road area due to the digging work for laying down of sewerage pipelines turned into a slush much to the disgust of the pedestrians. The absence of barricading for the safety of commuters was also not in place at the Camels Back road and many residents were seen treading over the mud pool at their own risk. The debris accumulated at Mall Road was also being dumped on the Camels Back road which created unpleasant situation for the morning walkers and the residents of the area. The residents rued the fact that they were treading over these roads. They said it could result in accident at any given moment if the problem is not rectified soon. Senior Pey Jal Nigam officials said they would immediately direct the contractors to place barricading on the either side of the project area so that the pedestrians and commuters do not have to face problem. The contractor was also directed to dump the mud debris elsewhere instead of the Camels Back road. The deadline to complete the sewerage work in the town is around March 15. |
DM relaxes ban on polythene use but challans still being issued
Dehradun, February 23 Hence, he would continue to punish the polythene users. The different approach adopted by two senior officials on the same issue has not only put the public in a
dilemma but has also increased the chances of a rift among them, which is not a healthy sign for the continuation of this project. The claim made by the district administration to hold a 'Clean Doon Clean Campus' drive once in a month proved flimsy, as the campaign did not take place this month. Under this drive polythene is collected from all over the city by school children, sanitary workers of Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC), NSS volunteers, NGOs and members of the civil and defence sections and disposed of. Not only this, no meeting between zonal magistrates and representatives of the members of the committee constituted over this issue took place. All these factors have put a question mark over the fate of this campaign. Harak Singh Rawat, who has launched many drives regarding eradication of polythene even when he was Additional Mukhya Nagar Adhikari in DMC and himself is quite passionate about the project ,is unhappy the way the present campaign has been suspended. He also clarified that the Executive Magistrate's powers could only be withdrawn with the intervention of the District Judge or High Court. His assertion put a question mark over the DM's suspension order of the polythene ban. It also raises another question as to who has more powers, DM or City Magistrate. Rawat rued: " The public and traders have started responding to the campaign. They have begun using cloth bags. The Executive Magistrate's powers had enabled us to impose the anti-polythene directive in the city and take legal action against offenders. We started achieving success in this drive, which never happened earlier. So there is no point in giving any relaxation at this crucial time. Otherwise, we will never be able to pick the momentum again." Purushottam who first fixed the deadline on February 28 further extended it up to March 15. He said: " The traders are not ready now. So I gave them some time. In the meantime, we will continue with our public awareness programme on polythene. He also rejected speculations that the DM budged before traders' demand, and hence, decided to lift the ban completely. |
1 arrested for committing fraud of Rs 53 lakh on trader
Mussoorie, February 23 The accused lured the businessman into his trap, showing an imaginative castle of the profit up to Rs 500 crore for manufacturing 37 lakh sweat shirts by bringing a unique cloth from Singapore. He then promised selling the shirts in the Indian market, and in the process cheated the businessman of Rs 53 lakh. The victim, Aman Arora, owner of a shop at Kulri Bazaar, named Sunny Garments, alleged that the accused, Rohit Sharma, resident of B-11 Press Enclave, Saket, New Delhi, presently residing at Trafalgar Apartments in Dehradun, came to his shop on May 2012 and bought some goods. Following that Rohit Sharma was introduced by a mutual friend Javed Ali, who said that he was acquainted with Rohit Sharma for the past several years. The accused then started building a close relationship with Aman Arora and lured him into a fake business deal, promising a profit of Rs 500 crore by manufacturing 37 lakh sweat shirts, using a cloth imported from Singapore and selling them in the Indian market. Aman Arora fell into the trap as Rohit Shrma claimed that he had a lot of friends abroad, and with their help the duo could earn unprecedented profit in only a few months. Rohit Sharma also pledged to invest a 1 per cent of the amount in the whole deal, thus becoming a minor partner in the alleged business deal. Rohit Sharma, to gain the trust of Aman Arora, using Internet, uploaded software for conferencing and involved Aman Arora in a multiple chat, where he himself posed as various dealers from Singapore and other concerned banking officials in order to provide authenticity to the whole deal. Aman Arora fell into the trap and several exchange of emails followed regarding the whole deal, leading to the transfer of money via Internet, and sometimes cash from the account of Aman Arora to the personal account of Rohit Sharma over a period of one year in instalments amounting to Rs 53 lakh. Aman Arora, with no inkling of fraud, submitted the amount gradually in small sums to Rohit Sharma. Aman Arora, blinded by the profit as shown by Rohit Sharma, even sold his shop in Mussoorie on the promise by Rohit Sharma that after earning the profit from the alleged deal, the shop would be bought once again in six months. The amount of Rs 53 lakh was deposited in the account of Rohit Sharma as demanded from time to time. Meanwhile, Aman Arora received no receipt for any transaction from Rohit Sharma, done by either cash or through Internet banking. The fraud came to light only when Rohit Sharma placed a fresh demand of Rs 3.5 lakh once again on February 21 so that the money could be delivered to the fake dealers at Singapore for the purchase of the cloth to begin the manufacturing of the sweat shirts. Aman Arora, sensing a fraud, invited Rohit Sharma to Mussoorie for the payment of the demanded money in cash as the banks were shut due to the Bharat bandh. He cornered him on Thursday night with the help of local businessmen and demanded an explanation of the whole deal. When Rohit Sharma could not divulge the details of the deal and any agreement with the dealers at Singapore, he was handed over to the police with the help of other businessmen. He admitted the whole fake deal and fraud committed with Aman Arora. When the parents of Rohit Sharma were contacted, they refused to take responsibility of the crime purported by their son. The police has registered a case against Rohit Sharma for involvement in a fraud and hatching a conspiracy against Aman Arora by entering into a fake business deal under Sections 420 and 506 of Indian Penal Code. The police was also investigating whether he acted on his own or was a gang involved in the crime. |
