Members of various bank associations forcibly closed the zonal office of the State Band of India on Cantt road. The employees of the Ordinance factory, various hotels and tea-estates faced opposition from the authorities. Meanwhile, petrol stations remained open.

The employees of the departments like the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam, LIC, Payjal Nigam, BSNL, all three corporations of the Power Department etc. observed the strike. The leaders of various trade unions and Left parties along with workers of the Anganwadi, Asha, Bhojan Mata and other organisations congregated at Parade Ground and held a rally. The rally started from Parade Ground, passed through Darshan Lal Chowk, Clock Tower and Rajpur Road and culminated at the old bus stand where leaders addressed the striking workers.

District president of the Centre of Indian Trade Union Satish Kumar said the Central government should take immediate steps to curb inflation, control black marketeering in the Public Distribution System, regularise the services of employees of corporations and revise salaries and packages of employees of various departments, corporations and hotels.

Senior leader of the CPI Samar Bhandari said the bandh also got support from the National Hydrology Centre and the National Visually Handicap Institute. The presence of members of INTUC and the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh was not much noticeable.

DMC elections: Several flaws in voters' list
Voting percentage shown reduced
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, February 20
The compilation work related to voters' list ward wise is over. The Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) elections are due for April this year, but several discrepancies have cropped up in the list. The way the numbers of voters have drastically reduced in the newly prepared list as compared to the earlier list prepared during the previous elections indicates towards lesser voting percentage this time.

BJP leader Vinay Goyal said: "The Election Commission has appealed to people to participate more and more in the voting process in order to have better voting percentage, but that does not seem to be the case in this year's DMC elections. The voting list has been grossly tampered with and plenty of voters have deliberately been left out. It is also the casual and callous attitude of booth-level officers, who prepared the list."

He alleged that the state government did not want the work regarding the compilation of the list completed in time in order to postpone the elections and appoint it's administrator to run the DMC. This was the reason, he said, for the glaring shortcomings in the list.

Councillors are crying hoarse about the shortcomings in the list and are not ready to accept these in the present format. Councillor Sachin Gupta said: "The voters' list and the corresponding polling booths prepared were made in a systematic manner in the last DMC elections." He

further said while showing the list that there was a lot of confusion in the list where house numbers were all jumbled up and polling booths set up at long distances. Gupta alleged that a number of house numbers were shown against DE block, which did not exist in the area.

Former councillor Omender Bhati said the names of poor people who lived on the other side of the road in Indira Nagar area had been totally omitted.

He emphasised that the population of the area should have increased in this election as many youngsters attained voting age but in the new voters' list, 25 per cent of the population of the area had been shown reduced.

Councillor Govind Mohan said the entire block in his ward was absent in the list. He suggested that the district administration should now make the previous list as the basis to remove the shortcomings in the new list.

Dehradun, February 20
Long ago Bharti Shivaji was mesmerised by the recital of legendary dancer Indrani Rehman, who had concluded her performance with Mohiniyattam. Inspired Bharti decided to plunge wholeheartedly into learning the dance form.

“At that point of time, I was learning Bharatnatyam and even trying my hand at classical singing, but after I attended the dance recital of Rehman, I was completely floored. I felt I could only relate to this graceful dance,” she said while speaking with The Tribune. Performing today at the Kendriya Vidyalya School (Upper camp), Shivaji left an indelible mark on the audience, bringing alive the entire landscape of Kerala. “The graceful and languid movements of Mohiniyattam are reminiscent of the swaying coconut trees in the gentle breeze, the feminine classical dance form of Kerala,” she added.

Hailing from a small town in Kerala and then moving to New Delhi, Shivaji says the entire journey had been aimed at firming her grip over her vocation. “I have learnt so much, while living in New Delhi as it offers several opportunities to artistes,” said Bharti. She often rushes off to Kerala to escape the harsh winters of New Delhi.

Extremely sensitive to the way the audience responds to the recitals, Bharti says it is equally important to create a rapport with the uninitiated audience as they never fail to respond to the lyrical grace of Mohiniyattam. “It is always encouraging to find the uninitiated responding to the dance in a way that is instantly fresh and receptive. During my dance recitals abroad, the audience at times leave me pleasantly surprised with their observations and queries. Dance and music have no boundaries,” stressed Shivaji.

Today Bharti began with a item followed by 'Stivik Abhinay' and 'Pandattam.'

She was accompanied by Shyamala Bhaskar on the veena, Sadanam Rajagopalan, vocalists, Srikumar, edakka, and Jayant Das, mrudangam and maddalam. Earlier, Principal of the school MB Chaturvedi welcomed the dancer and her team.
