Banking operations hit
Ludhiana, February 20
Normal banking operations were hit today as employees of public sector banks went on a two-day strike in response to a call given by the central trade unions to press for the wage hike.

The Ludhiana railway station will soon be renovated and upgraded to an adarsh (model) station. It is already listed as the category A-1 station.

Manufacturers of the nuts, bolts and fasteners are finding it hard to comply with the Bureau of Indian Standards and want that the norms be relaxed. A seminar was held by the production and general engineering department of the Bureau of Indian standards (BIS) here yesterday.

FCI workers strike in Jagraon
Jagraon, February 20
Members of the FCI Workers Palledar Union held a protest at the gate of the Jagraon Depot of Food Corporation of India (FCI). A large number of workers led by president Nahar Singh assembled at the gate and raised slogans against the government. The protesting workers observed a day-long strike. National general secretary of the union Amar Singh Bhattian said the government had not fulfilled pending demands of the union, including regularisation of workers.He stated that the government should revoke its decision to divide the allowance bill of the labourers.

Farm varsity Kisan Mela from March 1
Ludhiana: The theme for the PAU Kisan Melas will be "Ghar Di Sabzi-Dal Ugao: Sihat Banao, Paise Bachao (grow vegetables and pulses in your kitchen garden: Save money and stay healthy)". The seven Kisan Melas will be held in March 2013. Director of Extension Education said the first regional Kisan Mela would be held at Ballowal Saunkhri (Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district) on March 1, followed by the second and the third melas at Khalsa College, Amritsar; and at Gurdaspur on March 5 and 7, respectively. The fourth regional Kisan Mela will be organised at Rauni (Patiala) on March 11, the fifth mela will be held at PAU on March 15 and 16 while the sixth and the seventh regional Kisan Melas will be organised at Faridkot and Bathinda on March 19 and 21, respectively.

Man booked for abducting 14-yr-old girl
Ludhiana, February 20
 The police booked Shalu Kumar, a resident of EWS Colony near Division No 7, for abducting a 17-year-old girl on the pretext on marrying her. The victim's father told the police that Shalu lured his daughter and abducted her on February 17.He said initially, he kept looking for his daughter. Later during the day, he came to know that Shalu had abducted her.

Two youths get 10-year jail for raping minor
Ludhiana, Feburary 20
Surinderpal Kaur, Additional Sessions Judge, has convicted two youths Mohammad Dulal, alias Dulla, hailing from Katihar (Bihar) and Jai Karan Mourya of Mundian Kalan, Ludhiana, on the charges of kidnapping and raping 14-year-old minor girl.

Simarjit Kaur of Khalsa College for Women, Amanjit Kaur of GHG Harparkash College of Education, Navdeep Kaur of Sikh Girls Senior Secondary School and Amanjot Kaur Gill of GHG Institute of Law, were adjudged best athletes at the Joint Annual Athletics Meet of Sidhwan Educational Institutions near Jagraon.

18 football players to represent district
Ludhiana February 20
The District Football Association selected 18 players to represent Ludhiana district in the Senior Punjab Football Championship to be held at Bassi Pathana, Fatehgarh Sahib district, on February 28. The association conducted a selection trial at Guru Nanak Stadium here today.
