Locks of Mussoorie's Hackman's Hotel broken, guards beaten up
Police foils attempt to take possession of the heritage hotel
Residents of the town under shock

Mussoorie, February 19
The row over the ownership right of the historic heritage Central Grand Hotel previously known as Hackman's Hotel on Mall Road, Mussoorie, turned ugly today when over a dozen unidentified persons entered the hotel, and after beating up the guards and breaking the locks, entered the hotel, claiming their possession at around 4 pm.

However, the attempt of the unidentified persons was foiled when the local residents came out in support of the local guards, who were beaten up. They raised the alarm and gheraoed the police station, demanding immediate arrest of the persons.

The residents alleged that son of a senior Congress leader was involved in the alleged possession attempt, and demanded strict action against him.

The SDM, Mussoorie, and the police arrived at the site to defuse the situation and calm the sentiments of the local residents.

The police, after gauging the tense situation, summoned a platoon of the PAC to control the situation.

Local political representatives, including senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh Mall, municipal ward members Kedar Singh Chauhan, Sushil Kumar, Megh Singh Kandari and social activist Pradeep Bhandari arrived at the police station in support of the local guards, who were manhandled by the unidentified persons, claiming to be the rightful owners of the alleged disputed property in Mussoorie.

The residents alleged that the Mussoorie police was hand-in-glove with the miscreants, who were trying to enter the property owned by Atul Khanna, the owner of Bhagwan Das Enterprises Pvt Limited, allegedly on false ground, which had created a law and order problem and spoilt the peaceful environment of the town, instilling fear among the people here.

Ward member Kedar Singh Chauhan, who is also a trade union leader, said that they were not interested in the feud for the property between the two, but the manner in which the possession attempt was made where the guards were threatened and beaten up, was really the cause of concern. This act would not be tolerated at any cost.

The Mussoorie police, acting on the complaint of Satpal Sillu, the manager of the owners in possession of the hotel, has apprehended around a dozen persons and begun investigations.

Atul Khanna, the present claimant of the property, also arrived late in the afternoon. Speaking to the media he said that he had bought the said property from Yusuf, who has claimed to be in the lineage of the nawabs of Lucknow in 2009. He further said that the property was rightfully handed to him after vacating the possession holders in February 2011 through the directions of the Supreme Court. Therefore there was no question of any dispute over the property as he was the rightful owner.

On the other hand, when Virendar Kumar, the lawyer of the other party which attempted seeking possession of the hotel today, was contacted, he said that his client Surendar Singh and Mohammad Yusuf were close friends, and out of mutual trust, Rr 1, 08, 00,000/- was taken by Mohammad Yusuf from Surendar Singh for three years on September 10, 2009. When the said loan was not repaid by Mohammad Yusuf to Surendar Singh, another settlement deed was drafted between the duo.

In addition to that an agreement-cum-receipt was acknowledged by Mohammad Yusuf, rectifying the taken loan as indicated above, and in the settlement deed, a dilapidated hotel based in Mussoorie, in this case Central Grand Hotel, previously known as Hackman's Hotel, was given to Surendar Singh to run the hotel till the amount was repaid by Mohammad Yusuf.

Virendar Kumar, speaking further, said that after the hotel was taken into possession by Surendar Singh, Mohammad Yusuf dilly-dallied with the agreement, and a civil suit was filed thereafter in the civil court of Dehradun on 21-01-2013. But Surendar Sngh was not given an ex-parte injunction there. Following that a petition was filed in the court where the court directed the respondent not to dispossess Surendar Singh from the occupation of the said hotel based in Mussoorie. Virendar Kumar further said that as his clients were still the rightful owners of the hotel, they had come for the possession. He refuted the claims of any manhandling of the guards present at the hotel in Mussoorie while taking the possession.

SDM NS Dangi said that the records of the both parties have been summoned and he would be able to comment on who is the rightful owner only after complete investigations. It is worth mentioning that the Hackman's Hotel used to have it's own 'Hackman's Queen' in the summer and autumn festivals in the late 70s.

MLAs support inclusion of colonies in MC limits
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, February 19
With the delimitation process of the Haridwar Municipal Corporation going on, the demand for the inclusion of many colonies situated on the outskirts of the city periphery in the MC limits is fast gaining momentum.

Ranipur BHEL legislator Aadesh Chauhan and Haridwar rural MLA Swami Yatishwaranand today led a march of residents of Shivalik Colony, Subash Nagar and Tehri Vistapith colony in support of their demand.

The march culminated on the MC premises where a memorandum was handed over to the executive officer of the corporation.

Yatishwaranand, while addressing the gathering, said Shivalik Nagar and Tehri Vistapith had developed into mega colonies due to industrial development in the nearby Industrial Integrated Estate, SIDCUL.

“These colonies bear the maximum pressure of the people working in the 100-odd factories. Hence, they need better infrastructure, civic facilities and other amenities which can only be provided by bringing them under the ambit of the Municipal Corporation,” said Yatishwaranand.

Chauhan criticised the Congress-led government in the state for failing to cater to the aspirations of the people of the city. He said the government was playing vote bank politics while including colonies within the MC limits as the Ranipur seat that he represents has three major colonies.

“The people want development for which the inclusion of these colonies, which form a major part of the Ranipur-BHEL Assembly segment, is imperative,” he added.

“I also urge local parliamentarian Harish Rawat to take up the issue with the state government so that these colonies are brought under the Municipal Corporation,” said Chauhan.

Congress city president OP Chauhan said Harish Rawat had taken up the issue with Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna, who assured him of looking into the matter sympathetically.

Haridwar, February 19
Matra Sadan ashram founder Swami Shivanand has warned of resorting to agitation once again if the administration allows quarrying in the region despite court's prohibitive orders as was done a few months back.

Swami Shivanand also alleged conspiracy by the quarrying mafia to kill Brahamchari Poornanand while he was forcefully hospitalised after 12 days of hunger strike.

Cornering Haridwar District Magistrate Sachin Kurwe and local parliamentarian Harish Rawat for favouring the quarrying mafia, Swami Shivanand said they should answer as to how the Ganga's sanctity would be maintained when it was affected by quarrying.

"If quarrying is started, then we will resort to agitation. Already the quarrying mafia and people engaged in stone crushing has evacuated material worth billions of rupees through illegal quarrying alone, damaging the local ecology and environment" said Shivanand.

Demanding the expansion of the Kumbh mela land area in Haridwar, the saint sought special prohibitive orders for the Kumbh mela land as it's getting shrinked day by day, due to encroachment and quarrying.

A letter has also been forwarded to the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Uttarkhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna in this regard by the Matra Sadan.
