Hospital staff accused of swapping newborn
Arteev Sharma
Tribune News Service

Jammu, December 30
A couple from Doda has alleged that their newborn baby was allegedly swapped at Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) Hospital. The couple alleged that the hospital staff had swapped the baby for money.

The hospital has once again run into controversy even as the hullabaloo over the recent case of alleged negligence resulting in the death of a one-and-a-half-a-year-old girl about a fortnight back refuses to die down.

Demanding an in-depth probe into the incident, the couple accused that their baby boy was swapped by the hospital staff with a baby girl. They have also lodged a complaint with the police. The hospital administration, however, termed the allegations as "baseless" and claimed that they had requested the police to verify the official record.

The complaint, Nissar Ahmed of Doda, said he had admitted his wife, Afroza in the SMGS Hospital, Jammu, on December 24 and she delivered a baby boy on December 26. “At the time of the delivery, the doctors had told me that my wife had delivered a boy. When we completed all formalities, they later told us that Afroza had delivered a girl. They have swapped our baby with someone else's baby for money,” Ahmed said.

The dejected father alleged that when he objected to the attempt of the hospital staff to enter wrong information in the official record, they (staff) asked him whether he would have accepted it if his wife had delivered a girl child.

“They tried to justify their act through irrelevant excuses. We approached the police but no action has been taken so far," he said.

An inconsolable Afroza made fervent appeals to the state administration to conduct holding an in-depth inquiry into the incident so that she can her baby back.

Dr Dara Singh, Deputy Superintendent SMGS Hospital, however, refuted the allegation. "These are baseless and hold no ground," he said. “The woman had delivered a girl after a caesarean delivery that too in the main operation theatre of the hospital. She delivered the baby at 2.22 pm on December 26 and no other delivery was conducted in the theatre between 1 pm and 2:30 pm that day. There is no question of the baby getting swapped,” he said.

He said the couple might have earlier conducted a sex-determination test, which was illegal, and they might have been told by someone that they would get a baby boy which was not the case. "It is a case of sheer misunderstanding because after the Caesarean delivery, the hospital sweepers might have congratulated the father. The father might have understood that his wife had a delivered a baby," Dr Singh said. He said they have requested the police to verify the official record but the issue has already been sorted out. "The couple was agreed to accept their baby and there is no confusion anymore in the case," he claimed.

SGFI tells sports depts not to send weak contingents

Tribune News Service

Jammu, December 30
After the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) expressed concern over the poor performance of the state contingent at the National School Games, the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), which is the apex body to conduct the games, has toughened its stand and made it clear to all sports departments concerned across the country not to send weak contingents to take part in important disciplines.

Sources said, the SGFI had recently formulated new terms and conditions for the inclusion of important sports/games in the upcoming 58th National School Games. The new terms aimed to ensure maximum participation of the contingent in important disciplines but the contingents failed to fetch medals in these disciplines.

Sources said the SGFI has also intimated that there was relaxation of these norms in the ongoing 58th edition of the prestigious games as the schedule of competitions has been finalised and it does not want to disturb the same. Sources said the relaxation of norms was done on a request by the DYSS, Jammu, which is also struggling to field a strong team for important disciplines due to lack of infrastructural facilities.

“The move was on the cards because reports pour in at the SGFI headquarters that the sports departments across the country, including the DYSS, Jammu, are not focusing on the improvement of their contingent in important disciplines instead they are more inclined towards new disciplines which are of very little importance in the SGFI calendar of activities,” sources said.

“The SGFI has asked the sports department to ensure that the respective affiliated unit of the federation which has proposed for the inclusion of any event/discipline should conduct the National School competitions for three years in coordination with the respective National Federation under the aegis of SGFI,” sources add. “Further, the disciplines which are not listed in the 2012-13 calendar should also fulfill the terms conditions within three years and otherwise the disciplines will be removed from the SGFI calendar without prior notice,” sources said. A senior DYSS official said, “Yes, we have received the message from the SGFI.” “In fact, the department is already working to prepare a strategy to strengthen our contingent in important disciplines for the next edition of the National School Games,” he claimed.
