Chennai, December 30
The turning point in the first One-day International, according to Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, occurred before the first ball was bowled — he said Pakistan’s winning the toss was the most significant moment of the day.

It’s difficult to contradict a man who played the most skilful innings of the day, but it must be pointed out that losing the toss and having to bat first on a difficult pitch wasn’t what caused India’s fall. The greater reason was the excellent bowling by Junaid Khan, who took out Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh and Rohit Sharma within 43 balls he bowled from the fourth over. His excellence was matched by the inability of the Indian top order to watch the swinging ball carefully and get behind it fully.

Heavy rains over the last 36 hours had made the conditions difficult to bat on — and in difficult conditions, on damp tracks, you need great technique or/and greater resolve. The top batsmen failed to display either attribute. We’ve seen in domestic cricket that each time a difficult, green wicket is provided for a Ranji Trophy game, teams get shot down for below 100 runs — against bowlers much less skilful than the Pakistanis.

Today, four of the top five batsmen had their stumps destroyed as they were unable to read the line and swing and cover their wickets.

At 29 for five, the game was practically over. That Pakistan still had to fight it out until the first ball of the 49th over was entirely due to the resolve of Dhoni. Dhoni is not a great technician — his game, to put it plainly, is ugly. He possesses a pretty solid mind, though. Coming in at 29 for five, he knew the game would be over if he fell. Thus he was very careful to begin with — he left balls outside the stump alone, kept the ones directed at the stumps out. Just as he did during his remarkable innings in the Nagpur Test against England, Dhoni played with amazing self-denial. His aim was to just hang in there, keep the ball out and run hard. He hit his first four off the 79th ball he faced, in the 39th over of the innings -- before that, he had just 34 off 78 balls.

Thus, after 39 overs, India were 132 for six, scoring at 3.38 an over. Then Dhoni changed gears. Off the last 11 overs, India scored 95 runs, and Dhoni ended up with 114 off 125. He made 79 off the final 47 balls he faced, hitting seven of them for fours and three for sixers. India thus added 125 runs in the final 15 overs. Dhoni was tiring, suffering from cramps, but he ran like he always does, smacked the ball hard and pushed his team.

Suresh Raina also hung in, playing in a restrained manner, making 43 off 88 balls with just two fours. The two added 73 for the sixth wicket off 23.4 overs of grim cricket.

Admittedly, the wicket had eased up a bit after some sun, and even Ravichandran Ashwin was able to smack 31 off 39 balls; but the fact remains that Dhoni and Raina showed up the spinelessness of the top order.

A target of 228 was going to be tricky to chase, but Dhoni later said he knew that it was not likely to be enough.

It wasn’t easy for Pakistan, though, for the new ball swinging. When Bhuvneshwar Kumar got the first two batsmen out, Pakistan’s challenge became bigger at 21 for two in 10.2 overs.

Then the excellent Younis Khan took over. From that intense, pressurised situation, he took the challenge to India, making their fielders scatter around. He made only 58, but they were made off just 60 balls. In the context of the situation and the conditions, it was a remarkably quick innings.

Nasir Jamshed got the century, remaining unbeaten on 101, but Younis provide the spark that ignited the Pakistani engine. Jamshed could have been run out on seven, should have been declared caught at slip on 24, and was dropped by Yuvraj on 68. He made India pay for these mistakes.

Younis and Jamshed added 112 for the third wicket, and that practically ended India’s hopes as the ball was getting soft, swinging less and the batsmen had settled in.

When captain Misbah-ul-Haq was out for 16 in the 39th over, it was 172 for four — 56 required off 70 balls. Tricky situation, in front of a partisan though fair crowd. But Shoaib Malik played a steady hand, 34 off 35 balls, to shepherd his team home.

Dhoni’s first century in three years was his eighth overall, and his second in a losing cause. Jamshed’s second ODI century was also his second against India; unlike the 112 in the Asia Cup earlier this year, when Pakistan lost, his 101 here won the game. Dhoni was declared the Man of the Match for his was the superior innings, though there was a case for giving the award to Junaid for practically finishing the match in the first 50-odd minutes of play today.

View from Pak: T20 is the great redeemer
Rohit Mahajan/tns

Chennai, December 30
“We hope India would be able to tour Pakistan soon,” Zaka Ashraf, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, told this correspondent last night soon after his arrival in Chennai.

Naturally, PCB desperately wants India to tour their country in the near future — they want any team to tour their country, actually. International cricket has come to a standstill there after the Sri Lankan team was attacked in Lahore nearly four years ago.

Pakistan is keen, but the view from India is a bit different, especially since such a tour would need to be cleared by the Home Ministry.

India is the home to the greatest riches in the world of cricket — everyone hates India, the superpower of cricket, but everyone loves India, the game’s moneybags. A visit by the Indians enriches cricket boards like nothing else. To be touched by the Indian cricket board (BCCI) is to be touched by Midas.

And while the quality of cricket, the thrills it generates during an India-Pakistan match are definitely something to look forward to, there can’t be no holding back the fact that India’s greatest appeal is financial.

That is also the greatest appeal of Twenty20 cricket -- it brings in the money. It’s highly conceivable that, if there was little or no money in Twenty20 cricket, former greats would have condemned the game as the destructor of cricket’s skills. In fact, in 2007, BCCI president Sharad Pawar said that India was opposed to the T20 World Cup because the format diluted the importance of Test cricket.

But money is the great redeemer of the T20 format — money persuaded the BCCI that T20 isn’t such an evil thing, after all. That’s the view from Pakistan, too.

Wasim Bari, who was in India as a goodwill ambassador of the PCB, told this correspondent that cricket is now a business and must be run like a business. “Cricket has become an industry and it needs to be profitable,” he said. “It needs to survive as an industry, and so it needs to make money.”

Bari says that the T20 format is subsidising the other formats. “You see, in the aviation industry, there are various sectors that earn no money for an airline, but it continues to operate them because they are important,” he said. “So these routes are subsidised by the profitable sectors. Similarly, Test cricket and ODI cricket are very important, but they are struggling to make money. The Champions Trophy is in danger because there are no sponsors. T20 cricket is cross-subsidising the other two formats.” Sadiq Mohammed, another former Pakistan player here as a goodwill ambassador, also brought in the issue of money, unprompted, when discussing T20 today.

“I think T20 is the demand of the present, what the public needs. And the financial background of it is quite a lot,” he said. “Money is in its place, money comes because of cricket. People used to come and watch (Test cricket) all day,” he added. “This T20 is only three hours of cricket, which is very good. Money is coming too, and this money is coming because of the cricketers,” he said.

Afridi needs to take a break: Nazir

Karachi, December 30
Dashing Pakistan opener Imran Nazir has advised all-rounder Shahid Afridi to take a break from international cricket to recover his confidence and form. "There is no doubt that Shahid bhai is going through a bad patch and his luck is also not good. I have not seen such a long bad patch for any player," Nazir said.

Afridi was recently dropped by the national selectors for the one-day series in India. They were hopes that if he performed well in the two T20 matches he would be retained for the one-day series as well but after a sluggish performance in both games he returned home luckless on Saturday.

The former Pakistan captain has been going through a rough patch in batting and bowling in recent months and the biggest debate in Pakistani cricket circles is now about his future as an international player. "I have no doubt that Shahid bhai can still play for a couple of years but right now I would say he needs to take a break," Nazir, himself dropped from the national team after the T20 World Cup, said. "I think he is taking too much pressure on himself and it is not helping his confidence. He should take a break from the game, work on his basics and come back fresh for a new stint," Nazir told 'Geo Super' channel.

"I think Pakistan definitely needs him but not in this form. His energy and enthusiasm is important for the team and he needs to get it back," Nazir said. Pakistan's experienced all-rounder Abdul Razzaq also backed Afridi, insisting that he should have been retained. Razzaq, who was also dropped for the T20 and ODI series against India, said that Afridi's experience was still invaluable to the team and he needed to be given some confidence. Meanwhile, Afridi got into a argument with a journalist at the airport on returning from India after taking part in the T20 International series.

Afridi lost his cool when a television reporter asked him a somewhat stinging question: "Aap nay chaka lagaya aur phir thos hogaya (you hit a six and than deflated)." He reacted angrily and said that the journalist needed to be careful with questions.

"Aap ko apni umar ka khyal karma chaiya aur is kisim kay sawaal nahi karnay chaiya. (You should think of your age and should not have asked this kind of questions.) Aap ko kya pata T20 cricket ka ab zamana badal gaya hai ussi tara khelna parta hai. (What do you know about T20 cricket, we have to play like that only)," retorted Afridi.

The all-rounder, who was not retained for the ODI series against India came out of the airport terminal building in a hurry and asked the reporters to ask their questions quickly.

As Afridi got into the argument with the reporter, television channels showed a somewhat bemused Sohail Tanvir standing behind him and looking on. — PTI

Dhoni’s ton a great effort, says Misbah

Chennai, December 30
His gritty century could not help India's win but skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's ton under challenging conditions was acknowledged and appreciated by his counterpart Misbah-ul-Haq.

Dhoni was also adjudged Man-of-the-match for his knock. "It was more difficult to play in the first half. There was lot of moisture but very well played by Dhoni. He single-handedly took the game away from us but in the end (Nasir) Jamshed played brilliantly for us," Misbah said at the post match presentation ceremony. "Nasir played an extremely good knock and showed the way by finishing the game," he added.

Misbah said his fast bowlers — Junaid Khan and Mohammad Irfan — did a fantastic job of the side after winning a crucial toss "It was a good toss to win. It was an excellent spell by Junaid. He has done it before in a Test match in Sri Lanka.

There was something for the bowlers but if you don't bowl in the right areas when the ball is seaming, you don't get result. Good to see that the bowlers pitched in the right areas in helping conditions," he said. Pakistan skipper said it was difficult for the fast bowlers despite helpful conditions due to high level of humidity.

"It was hit and muggy. Humidity was a factor as both teams found it hard. Credit must be given to both teams' fast bowlers for bowling in such conditions," he said.

Dhoni said it was always difficult to comeback in the match after losing half-the-team at a score 29 and he chose not to play big shots while batting with Suresh Raina. "I am satisfied with my batting. There was something for the fast bowlers, but they also pitched it in the right areas. Once we lost five wickets, it was difficult to come back. "We delayed the slog to get to a respectable score. 227 was a good score from where we had started but overall, it was not enough in the end. The wicket got better later and our part-timers struggled," Dhoni said. — PTI

My death would have avoided Mohun Bagan suspension: Nabi

Kolkata, December 30
A day after the suspension of his club from the I-League till 2014-15, beleaguered Mohun Bagan mid-fielder Syed Rahim Nabi today said his "death" on that December 9 derby could have avoided his club of the severe punishment by the AIFF.

In a press statement, Nabi, who had sustained two fractures in his cheekbone after being hit by a stone during the violence-marred match against East Bengal, today questioned the suspension and held himself "responsible" for the crisis.

"With deep pain, I say that we would not have been deprived of football, if I was killed in that incident on December 9," an emotional Nabi wrote in Bengali in the press statement.

"In a way, my injury is responsible for Mohun Bagan's decision to withdraw the team after the interval. "Many had said, if the stone had hit me somewhere else (head), it would have been difficult to escape death. It makes me feel that if I was killed that day, the national club would not have meted out such a harsh punishment." Fully supporting Mohun Bagan's decision, he further wrote: "Mohun Bagan were forced to take such a decision keeping in mind football and football-loving people.

"Had we played in the second-half, more spectators or players might have been injured," he said.

He further said it's difficult for them to come out of the mental trauma of not playing in the I-League anymore.

"I don't know how to come out of the mental trauma of not playing in the I-League. I am also deeply hurt by the AIFF suspension as any other sports-loving person," Nabi said.

Violence had gripped Yuba Bharati Krirangan with spectators hurling stones on the pitch soon after Mohun Bagan forward Odafa Okolie was red-carded during December 9 I-League derby.Down 0-1, Mohun Bagan had refused to play in the second-half, in a clear breach of rules that amounts to suspension for three seasons. Acting on a judgment by one-man committee of Justice A K Ganguly, the AIFF in an unprecedented decision yesterday suspended the 123-year-old club for next two seasons, while making their campaign in the ongoing season null and void.

Meanwhile, about one hundred supporters held a rally outside Mohun Bagan tent this afternoon, demanding ouster of the club officials. "Because of a handful of officials we had to face such a situation. It's high time that we remove (managing director) Anjan Mitra and co," a protester shouted. — PTI

EPL
Walcott fires as Arsenal rout Newcastle 7-3

London, December 30
Theo Walcott hit a hat trick as Arsenal scored six second-half goals on Saturday to thrash Newcastle 7-3 and record their fourth straight win in the Premier League. Walcott played in his preferred central striking role and showed why Arsenal is eager to retain him when his contract expires in the off-season, completing the scoring in the 90th minute with an impudent chip after a dribbling run that eluded several defenders.

"My desire is to extend his contract," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. "I think he belongs here. Hopefully we can do it. I think he loves the club and the club loves him and the reciprocity in love is difficult to find."

Substitute Olivier Giroud scored a double, while Lukasz Podolski and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also found the net for Arsenal at Emirates Stadium.

Demba Ba was on target twice for Newcastle, with Sylvain Marveaux also scoring. They equaled the second highest-scoring game in Premier League history, behind Portsmouth's 7-4 victory over Reading in 2007.

Arsenal are in fifth place but have a game in hand. Newcastle are 15th, three points above the relegation zone. Thierry Henry was in the stands and he was on his feet after 20 minutes when Walcott made a break from the halfway line that was reminiscent of Arsenal's record scorer and capped his run with an adroit low finish inside the side netting.

Newcastle pulled level through Ba but Oxlade-Chamberlain scored, only for Ba to grab his second to make it 2-2. Marveaux equalized Podolski's header, but Walcott put the Gunners 4-3 up before setting up Giroud twice and finishing the scoring with his chip.

"Today just typifies what I think he can do through the middle," Wenger said of Walcott. "The first goal was a Thierry Henry-type goal and he showed great determination with the third. He has become a good finisher. He has learned a lot because he is an intelligent player and because he is intelligent he will continue to improve."

Walcott has scored four goals and won one decisive penalty in the three games he has started up front, and he now has 14 for the season. Newcastle finished the year by scoring three times at both Old Trafford and Emirates Stadium but losing both games.

Dzeko double fires for Man City

Edin Dzeko scored twice as Manchester City survived Samir Nasri's dismissal to secure a dramatic 4-3 win at Norwich on Saturday. Roberto Mancini's side were 2-1 up thanks to two goals from Bosnian striker Dzeko in the first four minutes at Carrow Road when Nasri was shown a straight red card for head-butting Sebastien Bassong just before the break. But the former Arsenal midfielder's controversial sending off didn't scupper City's hopes of keeping in touch with Man United. — Agencies

Ludhiana, December 30
Himachal Pradesh eves beat Uttarakhand 35-13 in the women's category of the the IMG-Reliance 63rd Senior National Basketball Championship being played at Guru Nanak Stadium.

The current champions (women), Indian Railways continued with their winning spree, scripting an authentic 116-47 win against Uttar Pradesh to register third consecutive victory .

Meanwhile, hosts Punjab failed to cope up with their rivals Kerala in the women's section as the former lost it tamely 32-70. The home side appeared to be minnows as the cagers from the Southern state dictated the terms to clnich the issue quite comfortably. After making their opponents biting the dust during the last two days when Indian Railways thrashed Delhi and then Kerala posting over 100 points against them, the defending champions' supremacy was never threatened throughout the encounter.

They went on to consolidate their lead in each quarter and eventually romped home victorious without facing much resistence. The experienced duo of Geethu Anna Jose and Kiranjit Kaur played the pivot role in Indian Railways' victory. They contributed 26 and 12 points, respectively. Other notable scorers were M Pushpa and P Anitha who accounted for 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Serena in Rd 2 of Brisbane International

Brisbane, December 30
A pain-free Serena Williams sent an ominous warning to her rivals as she crushed fellow American Varvara Lepchenko 6-2, 6-1 in the first round of the Brisbane International on Sunday.

Third seed Williams, 31, pulled out of an exhibition tournament in Thailand last week amid concerns she had not fully recovered from a recent foot surgery.

But she looked in great touch against Lepchenko, who was never able to trouble Williams after squandering five break points in the opening game.

The 15-time grand slam winner quickly found her groove as she romped away to win in 59 minutes. "My foot didn't hurt today," a relieved Williams said. "I was a little nervous, but I was completely fine.

"I was excited to get an early start so just in case I did have any pain I could have tomorrow off, but everything was fine." Williams entered the tournament as firm favourite after a stellar second half of 2012, during which she won seven titles, including Wimbledon, the US Open, the WTA Championship and the Olympics. "I love winning, and I feel like as long as I'm able to win some matches and do well, I'm really motivated to keep going," she said.

"I just love being out there. I think going through what I went through a year and a half ago (when she suffered from severe foot injuries) really just made me realise that I get to do this and have fun."

Former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova got her campaign off to an impressive start when she downed Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro in straight sets.

Kvitova, the sixth seed, cruised through the first set and opened a 5-3 lead in the second, but was forced to hold off a Suarez Navarro fight back to win 6-3, 6-4 in 90 minutes. The tall left hander had a stellar 2011 when she broke through to win Wimbledon along with five other WTA titles on her way to a career-high ranking of number two, having started the year at 34. She lost ground in 2012, slipping back to number eight, but said she wasn't concerned. — Reuters

Tennis: Focus on top four in Chennai Open

Chennai, December 30
The 25-year-old Berdych was a semi-finalist here in 2011 as the top seed, when he lost to eventual champion Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, who is seeded fourth this year, and would be keen to justify his top billing this time around.

However, Berdych could run into third-seeded Marin Cilic, winner here in 2009 and 2010, in the semi-finals. Berdych, the 2010 Wimbledon finalist, enjoys a 4-1 win-loss record over the 24-year-old Croatian, who is returning here after a year's break following his first round loss in 2011.In the bottom half, last year's finalist and second seed Janko Tipsarevic from Serbia is expected to clash with Wawrinka in the semi-finals that, if it materialises, should make for an intriguing contest.

Tipsarevic, the 28-year-old World No.9, came close to winning his maiden Chennai Open title last year but went down to the big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic in the final that was marked by three tie-breaks. The 27-year old Swiss Wawrinka, ranked No.17, who won his only meeting with Tipsarevic on clay this summer in Rome, had a disappointing 2011 Chennai Open campaign, losing in the quarter-finals to qualifier Go Saeda from Japan.

Much of the attention in the singles draw would be on the top four seeds, though home hopes Somdev Devvarman and Yuki Bhambri will be the cynosure of the week. The two wildcard entries are not expected to cause major ripples as both have tough first round matches against higher ranked players.

Devvarman, finalist here in 2009, has had more than his share of injuries that saw his ranking freefall from a high of 62 in July 2011 to the current 663, and faces World No.106 Jan Hajek from the Czech Republic in the first round. The 20-year-old Bhambri, at 217 opens against 56th ranked Robin Haase of the Netherlands, the sixth seed.

Vishnu ousts Sanam in qualifiers

Vishnu Vardhan edged past fellow Davis Cupper and doubles partner Sanam Singh in a tough three-setter to move to the second round of the qualifying event for the ATP Chennai Open. Vishnu overcame diminutive Sanam 6-7(3) 6-4 6-3 in the opening round. Vishnu and Sanam will play the doubles main draw as wild card entrants. Vishnu will now fight it out with Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium in second round. Bemelmans ousted India's Ajai Selvaraj 6-1 6-0. — PTI
