1,521 cancer patients in dist
Jalandhar, December 18 As many as 2,860 people have died of cancer in the district in the past five years. The teams visited 3,41,553 homes and a population of 15,93,801 people has been covered since December 1. Giving more information regarding this, Project Nodal Officer-cum-District Family Welfare Officer Shiv Dyal Malhi said the teams had completed 70 per cent of the survey so far and during this week the survey would be completed. As many as 454 applications have so far been received in the district requesting help as per the CM Cancer Relief Fund. As many as 442 applications out of these have been forwarded to the Director, Health and Family Welfare, Chandigarh. The district cancer control cell has so far extended help to as many as 389 patients. Even though there are presently 1,521 confirmed cancer patients, the fact that only 454 out of them applied for help hints at the fact that awareness regarding the scheme is low among patients. Sources say there is a big number of patients who have not been able to get government help despite being cancer patients and applying for help. While the survey will certainly put things in perspective by at least making it clear as to how many people need medical assistance in the state, the actual aim will only be achieved when the government extends help to all patients (especially poor ones) in need of free medical assistance. |

Jalandhar, December 18 Sharda’s reply to the Punjab and Haryana Court with photographic evidences on illegally constructed shops in Urban Estate by the head of a religious sect, led by Baba Shavinder Jit Cheema, forced the head to go in for self-demolition. Then came her action against colonisers who had been evading external development charges, licence fee and change of land use charges. Nearly 100 colonisers were issued notices, who then started making payments. The official also recommended registration of FIRs against several illegal colonisers in the recent past. Her next action came on allottees of land in residential scheme areas, including Urban Estates and Chhoti Baradari, but had not constructed houses. After these allottees were made to pay hefty penalties as non-construction charges, rampant construction began all around. While the first half of the year did not fetch any revenue to PUDA with nil response to several auctions, surprisingly the two kept during "Shradhs" for residential and commercial properties fetched the office an income of Rs 9 crore. Then came the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on marriage palaces. The ACA got the survey of all 188 palaces, falling in Jalandhar, Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur, done. The scrutiny of relevant documents submitted by 71 palace owners was done and the officer submitted a report claiming that none was regularised. All palace owners have now been asked to submit applications for regularisation by December 20. The projects related to development of old jail site, old DC office and Urban Estate, Phase-III, in Pholariwal, however, have not seen much headway owing to delay in planning. |
Budding hotel professionals given certificates
Jalandhar, December 18 The hotels and restaurant industry, experts feel, could offer great employment avenues to the youth even during the ongoing economic recession. The Hotel and Restaurant Association of Punjab and Food Craft Institute, Hoshiarpur, under the aegis of the Punjab Heritage and the Tourism Promotion Board will be implementing the scheme jointly for enhancing the employment opportunities in classified hotels of the region. The "Hunar se rozgar tak" scheme was recently launched in Punjab to generate employment at the entry level in classified hotels. The skill development programme will also be launched in other classified hotels across the state by the Punjab Tourism Department with an objective to train the youth in the age bracket of 18-28 years with matric as the basic qualification. The pilot project of the programme has already taken off and a certification ceremony of the first batch of the beneficiaries was organised here today. Candidates, who successfully completed the six-week-long skill development course at Hotel Radisson and The Maya Jalandhar in food and beverage service (waiter-cum-house men) were given certificates and were also assured jobs. Highlighting the key features of the scheme, Navdeep Sharma, Principal, Food Craft Institute, said the selection of candidates was done by a duly constituted committee. These candidates were trained for six to eight weeks to take up employment in the same hotel or other classified hotel. "Upon attaining 90 per cent attendance and passing the course, the candidates are given an honorarium of Rs 15,00 per month, a set of uniform, tool kit, study material and a certificate besides meals during duty time. An amount of Rs 2,000 was also reimbursed to outstation students," said Navdeep Sharma. Paramjeet Singh Budhiraja, chief patron of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Punjab and the chief guest at the Ceremony, said employment generation through the "Hunar se rozgar tak" programme in hotels would be highly beneficial for starting a career in the hotel industry. He said the pilot project at the two main hotels would give the feedback for implementing the scheme effectively across the state. All classified hotels would be playing a very vital role in employment generation. He gave away certificates to students along with honorarium of Rs 1,500. Surinderjeet Singh, Managing Director of The Maya, Jalandhar, and Arun Kaul, General Manager, Hotel Radisson, said jobs were being offered to those trainees who had successfully completed the training programme. Ambica Agarwal, chief executive (busines development) and Jixi Virli, programme coordinator, Food Craft Institute, Hoshiarpur, congratulated both the hotels for initiating the scheme and the candidates on successfully completing the course and getting jobs. |

Movie with a message
Jalandhar, December 18 A writer since 16 to 17 years of age, Satwant had made three films on female foeticide and was working on a serial when some incidents spurred him to take a peek into the lives of the youth battling with the AIDS monster. When he started off making movies, female foeticide rode high on his mind. It wasn’t until he overheard a conversation by a bunch of labourers that AIDS began intriguing him. Interested in the project since 2005, he started work this year and completed the shoot yesterday. The film is titled "Manzil ton agge". Flashback “I am into the catering business and I once overheard a bunch of labourers speaking about a widow in our village whose husband had died of AIDS. They had been going to her,” said Satwant, a resident of Panshta village in Kapurthala district. “The woman’s tale and their psyche acted as a trigger for me to look deeper into such lives. Once I began observing, I encountered plethora of suffering youths and their sad tales. I met youngsters who had been swallowing (intoxicant) capsules like people would eat berries. Sometimes six at a time, sometimes more,” Satwant said. “Every two months, there is a death by addiction in our village and there is a funny lingo for people who die of addiction. Neighbours say ‘tappa pai gaya’ (a Punjabi phrase used for a bouncing ball) and relatives say “attack ho gaya” for such youngsters,” he said. “A burly 6-feet tall youth that I knew fell prey to drugs. He would always hang out at a chemist’s shop and one day on his way to it, he fell and died. When they bathed his body before the cremation, there wasn’t a spot which hadn’t been hardened due to constant use of injections,” he added. “Then there were those unsuspecting victims who contracted AIDS during blood transfusion and while getting a tattoo,” he said. Work started Greatly perturbed, Satwant decided he wanted to make a film on AIDS. He talked to some of the actors he was in touch with and started working with actors in the troupe (theatre) of Lakhbir Singh Azad of Zeera. This September, Satwant approached Prof Lakhbir Singh of Pahal in Jalandhar and the professor made some changes in the script based on his own observations and work in the field. The crew started shooting for the film in Khadoor Sahib on December 9 and completed the shoot yesterday. Post-production work While the film’s post production work is yet to be completed, Satwant said the film will be an eye-opener for many. The film will not be released in the commercial format, it will be a one-hour-fifteen-minutes-long fictional feature on AIDS which will talk about characters battling with the AIDS monster and their attempts to triumph over it. Satwant’s observations during his research, like the destruction of entire families due to the disease, the apathy and ignorance of health authorities and the taboo of the disease itself, which is one of the biggest threats to proper treatment, have all been discussed in the film. “Many SMOs that I conversed with, seemed to know very little about the disease. At places like the Civil Hospital in Khadoor Sahib, I noticed that most of the victims do not turn up again once they are diagnosed with AIDS. All this speaks loads of the prevailing mindset in the state,” Satwant said. After the post-production work on the film (which might take about two months), the NGO and the director plan to release it for audiences like students in schools and colleges. While the director had been offered to be helped by project director Kulbir Singh of the Punjab State AIDS Control Society, after his transfer, no official took up the project, despite Satwant’s efforts and he was forced to fund it on his own. But Pahal president Prof Lakhbir Singh said they would be planning to talk to NACO or PSACS for funding so that the project got wider viewership. The film is written and directed by Satwant Singh, produced by Prof Lakhbir Singh and co-produced by Lakhbir Singh Azad. Baba Sewa Singh of Khadoor Sahib and Dr Raghbir Bains have played a special role to facilitate the completion of the film. The lead actors of the film are Amarinder Singh and Esha Singh. |
