CT scan opening put off
Reason: Holiday declared due to death of Satguru Jagjit Singh Aparna Banerji Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, December 14 While the machine had to be inaugurated by Health and Family Welfare Minister Madan Mohan Mittal today, his visit was cancelled owing to the state holiday declared to mourn the demise of religious leader Satguru Sri Jagjit Singh. While today’s postponement was inevitable as a mark of respect for the leader, what is ironic is that despite having arrived at the Civil Hospital for the past seven months, the CT Scan machine’s services haven’t been availed by a majority of the needy patients. Inside sources told The Tribune that the CT Scan machine had been brought to the Civil Hospital as early as June. However, it was formally installed only in October. While the trauma ward had been inaugurated by then health minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla as early as 2010, it took two years for the hospital to get a CT Scan machine despite dire need. The need that the machine be made functional for all patients is emergent due to two prime reasons. One, poor patients have to shell out thousands of extra bucks for the same tests at private institutions where they are presently being referred since the inauguration is being awaited. Secondly, the transportation of emergency cases of patients suffering from grievous injuries from one hospital to another (for a scan), causes a huge risk to their lives, which will be spared if they are immediately taken for a scan within the same hospital. Hospital sources said the staff had carried out about 113 scans on the scanning machine from June till now. The average number of patients needing a CT Scan at the Civil Hospital (per day) has been four to five. Even though the machine has started operating on a trial basis, as confirmed by the hospital administration, a majority of the patients are still being referred to private hospitals. Medical Superintendent Dr Renu said, “The machine was installed at the hospital in October. So far as many as 80 scans have been carried out on a trial basis. While some initial scans were free, we began charging patients for the scans thereafter.” “Fees of Rs 600 (CT scan of head) and Rs 1,500 (CT scan of chest) shall be charged from patients which will be substantially lower than private rates, bringing a great respite to patients,” she added. Civil Surgeon Dr RL Bassan said while the next date for which the inauguration had been scheduled hadn’t yet been decided, it would most probably be held by next week. |
Violations in under-construction buildings checked
Jalandhar, December 14 Brar, along with Municipal Town Planner Tejpreet Singh and other officials of the department, went along the GT road, checking seven ongoing construction projects, including those of Cosmo Vehicles and Global Estates. He also checked four upcoming buildings along Mahavir Marg. Brar checked all buildings thoroughly, including their rear sides, frontal setbacks, parking areas left and compliance with respect to access as per the approved plans. At all sites, he first opened the copies of the approved plans and got the measurements done from his staff to cross check the plan. The CTP said there were no specific complaints. He was not doing any pick-and-choose and was just going about and checking all the under-construction projects along GT Road and Mahavir Marg today. He said he would make two to three more rounds to the city in near future and do checking along other main roads in the city. The CTP said he checked sites in Banga and Phagwara, adding that he would eventually submit report to the government. "As far as matter related to violations was concerned, I have given suitable directions to the local staff and even marked the violations on the copies of the plan," he further added. |
Shatabdi mows down buffalo, gets late
Jalandhar, December 14 The accident delayed the train by over an hour, as the animal carcass got stuck beneath the train engine, with local staff of the railway allegedly reaching the spot late. Railway employees could remove the buffalo carcass after a long struggle. Eye-witnesses said the train was at a high speed and dragged the animal for a long distance. The train could only be controlled after the driver applied emergency brakes. Scores of residents from nearby areas reached the spot to have a look at the carcass. The train was given the green signal only an hour after the accident. |
Plan for hanging dustbins along streetlight poles
Jalandhar, December 14 None of the markets in the city are equipped with dustbins, owing to which residents tend to litter around wherever they stroll about in market. Littering is especially common in the vicinity of an eatery or a food stall, with people lifting carry-away food in disposable stuff and throwing it off after walking some distance. Since there are no dustbins, market-goers have a common argument that finding no proper space to dispose of waste, they just litter it around along footpaths and roads. Shreya Jain, a college-goer, says, “It pains me a lot to see food articles and other stuff littered on road. The authorities must put some covered bins in markets like Model Town and Rainak Bazaar which have a heavy footfall, with people walking about and enjoying food at several eating joints all along the lanes.” The Municipal Corporation authorities, on the other hand, claim that they are unable to put up dustbins in the market. Mayor Sunil Jyoti says, “The problem is that no shopkeeper allows us to put a dustbin in front of his/her premises. So what we have decided is to put up hanging dustbins along streetlight poles.” |
Singh-ing for Bollywood biggies
Jalandhar, December 14 For Chanderkala Singh, the long wait to become a playback singer for a Bollywood film was punctuated by a list of considerations like her father’s health and the careers of her siblings. Singing since the age of 12, and living in Mumbai for the past 10 years, it was only recently that she found wide recognition for her talent. While she credits the song "Sohni de nakhre sohne lagde" from the film "Partner" for giving her a big break in the Bollywood, she is quick to add that the success did not come before Pankaj Kapoor’s "Mausam". It was only with her duet with Mika for the song "Saj dhajke aya ladiye ni tera sehreyan vala" in "Mausam", that Bollywood finally took notice of her. Recently lending her voice for the song "Hoor Pari", (along with Himesh Reshamiya and Shreya Ghoshal) in the film Khiladi 786, Chanderkala shared her journey while addressing a press conference here today. “I was born in Batala and our ancestral home is in Tarn Taran. My father Puran Chand was a music director for the Public Relations Department. He is my guru and it was from him that I picked up singing,” she said. Her initial foray into music was fiercely criticised by relatives, who stopped talking to the family, saying singing was no profession for girls. But her father’s faith in her talent made her stick to the profession, she said. Though settled in Mumbai for the past 10 years, she has great respect for Punjab and says the present visit had brought childhood memories flooding back. Having sung for HMV and T-Series records, Chanderkala is presently recording her three songs for the upcoming Punjabi film "Jatt In Love". She says she has great hopes from music directors like Pritam (who chose her for "Mausam"), who has also commended her for her extraordinary voice. Incidentally, she was picked up for "Mausam" by the film’s director Pankaj Kapoor, who thought that of the entire lot of singers he heard for the song, her rustic Punjabi voice most suited the part. Her songs, recorded for music director Himesh Reshamiya, are also set to release shortly. She is also presently working on some religious and Punjabi albums. |
District consumer disputes forum order set aside
Jalandhar, December 14 The state commission had heard an appeal filed by the Secretary, Department of Posts at New Delhi, senior superintendent of Post Offices of Jalandhar Division, senior postmaster Jalandhar and assistant postmaster of Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar Sub Post office here. It has now ordered that there was no forgery or fraud involved and the payment had been made to the right person who deserved it. The appeal had been filed against Kamlesh Bhatia, a retired government teacher and a resident of Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar, whose complaint with the district forum regarding illegal, premature withdrawal from her monthly income scheme by a small savings agent had been allowed on April 29, 2008. Kamlesh Bhatia and her father Dev Raj Bhatia had deposited certain amounts totalling Rs 3.98 lakh in 17 monthly income schemes. The amount was repayable on the completion of six years from the date of deposit along with 10 per cent bonus. She had said that on maturity of the deposits, she went to the post office to withdraw the amount, but was told that the agent had prematurely withdrawn the deposits in June 3, 2003, claiming to be a messenger of Dev Raj Bhatia. Dev Raj Bhatia had died on December 5, 2003, and had executed a registered will in favour of his sons, giving no share to her daughter. The post office officials had said that 10 accounts were opened in the SUS Nagar office and seven at the city head office in the joint names of Dev Raj Bhatia and the complainant. They said the amount after verifying the signatures of Dev Raj Bhatia, had been re-invested in new accounts in his own name and that of his sons the same day. The officials said that banking rules did not apply in the postal department. “The amount belonged to Dev Raj Bhatia and her name was introduced only for the sake of his convenience. It was a type B scheme account which could be operated by anyone of depositors,” they added. The officials put on record the rules which allowed an agent to deposit or withdraw the amounts. The commission concluded that the amounts were not paid to any unknown persons, but were re-deposited in Dev Raj’s own name and his sons. |

More than 1,600 students of different institutions have been trained in basic life support (BLS) techniques to provide emergency services to patients by doctors and paramedics of BBC Heart Care Pruthi Hospital. The unique initiative by the hospital management was started in August. “The initiative and training follows the set rules of the American Heart Association (AHA), which publishes a standard for providing basic and advanced life support, including standards for proper performance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Our aim is to make people understand the concept of emergency preparedness. Since on an average we have to wait for at least 20-30 minutes for an ambulance to reach our house, teaching the students CPR is virtually empowering them to provide preliminary care and save someone’s life,” said Dr C.S.
