Chandni Chowk building still smouldering
As many as 15 fire tenders were rushed to the site, but they could not reach the structure due to the narrow lanes

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 14
More than a day after a blaze broke out in a three-storey building in the congested Chandni Chowk electronics market, firefighters in the late evening were trying to douse the fire that was ‘smouldering’.

The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) director AK Sharma said, “The fire is smouldering and confined to one place. If it was raging, it would have spread to other buildings.”

Sharma said the firefighters could not enter the building as it is in a dilapidated condition and several of its internal structures have collapsed. The DFS today sent 15 fire tenders to the site of the incident. But most of the tenders were being used for backup only. The vehicles however were not able to reach the structure due to the narrow lanes of Chandni Chowk.

“We had to park the vehicles far away from the building. We had to instead pull the waterpipes to the structure,” said Sharma.

This was the same problem yesterday, which allegedly delayed the firefighting operation. The DFS were informed about the blaze in the building located at the electronics goods market of Bhagirath Palace in Chandni Chowk at 5.15 pm. They sent 22 fire tenders. But, due to the rush hour and crowded bylanes, the vehicles had to be parked at Gurudwara Sis Ganj, which is located a few hundred meters from the building. The firefighters initially didn’t have waterpipes long enough to reach the building, according to the police. They had to connect a series of pipes, which caused some delay in the firefighting operation.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (North District), Sindhu Pillai, the blaze started at a godown located on the third floor of the building. It then spread to the second floor. The fire was prevented from reaching an adjacent building and it was finally doused at 7 pm. No casualties were reported, as everyone made it out safely. A shopkeeper had to extricate himself out of the building by using hanging electrical cables.

Pillai said, “There is a lot of smoke of the LED and PVC wires that are burning.”

Other police officials assert that the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, as the firefighters cannot enter the building. They said that the structure might be broken down to extinguish the smouldering fire.

Pension tension taken up on last day of House
Himani Chandel
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 14
The issues of corruption in the release of pension for the aged and widows and irregularities in the booking of parks and community centres were raised today on the last day of the winter session of the Delhi Assembly.

The matters were raised by Parliamentary Secretary to CM Mukesh Sharma under Rule 280.

Speaking on the issue, the Urban Development Minister, Arvinder Singh Lovely, said that the government will write to the Lieutenant-Governor to act against the alleged nexus between the tent mafia and the three corporations in booking of parks and community halls. The minister instructed the civic agencies to release pension through Electronic Clearance System. (ECS).

“The tent mafia and corporators work hand in hand and create problems for the citizens in getting the community halls booked for weddings. The tent mafia gets advance bookings in fake names and then transfers them in favour of needy persons by charging a hefty amount,” said Sharma.

The parks and community centres were transferred by the Delhi Development Authority to the corporations for maintenance. The corporations have authorized the corporators to make recommendations for the booking.

While replying on the issue, the Urban Development Minister stated that he will address a letter to the Lt-Governor, requesting him to stop the practice of recommendations.

Raising the issue of release of pensions, Sharma said that the release of all the monetary benefits of social sector schemes should be put through the ECS.

“In the absence of the ECS mode in the corporations, the beneficiaries are finding it difficult to get the full amount of their pensions. The beneficiaries are being harassed and forced to frequently visit the offices of corporators,” he said.

While replying, Arvinder stated that he will instruct the corporations to implement the ECS mode in releasing pensions to the aged and widows in order to ensure transparency and accuracy.
