Creches in city not cared for

Imagine more than 25 A creche being run from a shabby room by the Sewa Bharti Sewa Dham in Sector 25. children packed liked sardines in a small room that also houses a makeshift kitchen having utensils and an LPG cylinder! This sums up the state of affairs at a creche being run by an NGO under the Chandigarh Social Welfare Board in Sector 25 here.

UT saw its worst-ever water crisis this year

City residents faced the worst-ever water crisis during the one-year tenure of Mayor Raj Bala Malik, which ends on December 31. This year, even residents staying on ground floors faced a water crisis.

After spending 55 days behind bars, suspended UT SP Deshraj Singh today walked out of the Burail jail. He was granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court yesterday.

Ailing girl needs help
Chandigarh, December 14
A 17-year-old girl is in need of Rs 1.5 lakh for the treatment of an aggressive giant tumour in one of her knees. The girl, Kusum, belongs to Bassi Pathana village of Fatehgarh Sahib district. Her father works in a small mill and can not afford to pay for the surgery.

10% hike in exam fee on the cards
Chandigarh, December 14
Panjab University is mulling over a 10 per cent hike in examination fee and in the rates of examination-related application forms from the next academic session. The proposal for the revised fee structure will be tabled before the Syndicate in its meeting tomorrow. The policy relating to the Central Placement Cell (CPC) will also be discussed during the meeting.

VC ‘out of bounds’, staff hold protest

Irked over not getting an appointment with the Vice-Chancellor for the last 15 days, the non-teaching staff of Panjab University today staged a protest outside the administrative block.

Dept wants traders to give UID numbers while filing returns

The UT Excise and Taxation Department will be encouraging traders to provide their UID numbers while filing their tax returns. The move will help the department while crosschecking details of an individual or a company.

Colourful start to chrysanthemum show
Chandigarh, December 14
Visitors take a look at flowers during the annual chrysanthemum show in Sector 33, Chandigarh, on Friday. The annual chrysanthemum show began here today at Terraced Garden, Sector 33. More than 265 varieties of chrysanthemums are being displayed here. The show, which will remain open till December 16, was inaugurated by Anil Kumar, Home Secretary, Chandigarh. He also released a brochure dedicated to the show and went around the garden, along with Raj Bala Malik, Mayor, VP Singh, Municipal Commissioner, and other officers of the corporation.

Police steps up vigil outside discotheques
Chandigarh, December 14
The Chandigarh Police has stepped up security outside various discotheques in the city. The step has been taken after a recent incident involving a girl who wasfound in an unconscious state after consuming excessive alcohol.

Three arrested for planning robbery
Kalka, December 14
The CIA staff, Panchkula, nabbed three looters yesterday night from a village of the Pinjore Block, who were planning a robbery. Official sources said on a tip-off on Thursday evening, a team of the CIA staff, headed by sub-inspector Deepak Kumar, conducted a raid at Bakshiwala village of the Raitan area of the Pinjore Block, where six persons were planning to commit a robbery at the house of one Kehar Singh of Bhagwanpura village of the same block.

Mutilated body of missing teenager found
Dera Bassi, December 14
The mutilated body of a missing teenager was found in a heap of stubble at Dappar Colony today. Deepak (15), a resident of Dappar Colony, was a student of class IX at the local government school. He left his home for an unknown place on the evening of November 24, but did not return home. His parents registered a complaint with the Nahar Police Chowki on November 27.

Attempt-to-murder charge dropped against six
Mohali, December 14
The charge of attempt to murder has been dropped against six suspects arrested by the local police in connection with the attack on Punjabi singer Babbu Chandigarhia. They were presented in the court and released on bail here today. 

10-yr jail for three
Chandigarh, December 14
The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Shalini Nagpal today sentenced three persons including two women to 10-years rigorous imprisonment in a case of dowry death.

Advocates come to blows outside High Court

High drama was witnessed outside the parking lot of Punjab and Haryana High Court this afternoon when a former chairman of Bar Council was allegedly beaten up by an advocate.

Pedestrian dies in mishap
Chandigarh, December 14
A 29-year-old pedestrian, Ram Saran Das, died after he was hit by a speeding car near a post office in Sector 23 last night. The incident took place when Ram Saran was crossing a road.

Man stabbed at Sector 56 market
Chandigarh, December 14
A 32-year-old man was stabbed by a group of youths at the Sector 56 market yesterday night. Mohammad Ishaz, a resident of Sector 56, who works in a factory at the Industrial Area, had gone to the market where he got into a scuffle with a group of youngsters following an argument. He was stabbed thrice in his stomach.

Autocross challenge begins today; 150 to take part
Chandigarh, December 14
About 150 racing car drivers as well as dirt bikers will flaunt their adrenaline power at the 4th edition of Autocross and Motocross-cum-Off-road Challenge 2012, starting tomorrow at the YPS Grounds in Mohali. The participants will feature in 13 different categories.

Saupin's Chandigarh defeated Chandigarh Baptist in the final match of the Edmund Rice Cricket Tournament (under 14) and lifted the trophy. The match was held at St John's, Sector-26.

Trials for PPL-2012 tomorrow
Chandigarh, December 14
Satluj Public School, Sector-4, Panchkula, is conducting trials for Panchkula Premier League (PPL) 2012. The trials will be held on December 16 at 3 pm on school premises. Eight teams will be made out of the players selected from the trials. Players born on or after January 1, 1998, will also be eligible to take part in the trials.

Girls’ shooting team win gold
Chandigarh, December 14
Girls’ Rifle Shooting team (U-17), Chandigarh, has won the gold medal in the 58th National School Games, which were held at Pune from December 3 to 7. The team members were Yashaswini, Shiwangee Sanwaria and Gauri. These players participated in individual events also.
