City roads to get a makeover New Delhi, December 10 According to the project, a whooping of Rs 2,000 crore will be spent wherein all major roads in the national Capital, covering a total of 802 km of stretch, will be rebuilt by the Public Works Department (PWD) in a span of two years. The project will also ensure beautification of roads, plantation on the central verge, installation of modern streetlights and building of footpaths along with laying of new roads. The 802 km of roads are more than 60 feet and were being handled by the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) before they were overtaken by the PWD in June keeping in view the improper maintenance of these roads. "We took the road in June and have already started the restoration work. The whole project will cost around Rs 2,000 crore," said Raj Kumar Chauhan, PWD Minister. The department has already awarded the tenders amounting to Rs 500 crore. "We had sought sanction for another Rs 300 crore, but due to the Chief Minister's unavailability following her illness, that has been delayed," he added. The department has engaged consultants from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and Roorkee, and Delhi Engineering College, Bawana, to conduct various tests for assessing the base of the roads. "In some parts of the city, the roads are already in proper condition. Therefore, we have appointed consultants to assess the standards that need to be followed," said the minister. The roads will be built of both type - concrete and bitumen. The concrete roads will be built only at places which are least dug by the other agencies. "Concrete roads cost three times more than bitumen roads. So, they will be built only where there is minimum digging take place," he
said. However, the minister said that concrete roads last much longer, around 20 to 30 years, whereas bitumen roads have life for only three to five years that too with proper maintenance. |
