Delay in surgery led to Anupama's death

Anupama A “delay in surgery” caused the death of 17-year-old Anupama, who died of gas gangrene after her left leg was crushed under the wheels of a CTU bus in July this year. This is one of the findings of a probe conducted by an external committee set up for the purpose. The committee has handed over the inquiry report to the PGIMER.

2 creches found stocking expired medicines
Chandigarh, December 10
Two crèches being run by the social welfare board were today found stocking expired medicines. The startling fact came to light during a surprise visit by Chandigarh Social Welfare Board chairperson Kamlesh to two creches in the city, one in Sector 25 and the other in Dhanas.

After a trial that lasted over three years, the court will announce the verdict in the sensational drug pilferage case, involving former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Director Saji Mohan as an accused, tomorrow.

Passengers suffer as fog delays trains

Passengers were left stranded at the city railway station with trains running late by an hour due to foggy weather today. The Jan Shatabdi arrived at the railway station at 9:05 pm after a delay of an hour. Passengers said they were put to inconvenience due to the delay in the arrival of trains.

Upadhyay is new UT IGP

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) today announced IPS officer RP Upadhyay as the new UT Inspector General of Police. The 1991 batch officer of the AGMUT cadre is currently posted as Additional Director with the Enforcement Directorate in New Delhi on deputation.

Drive to check misuse of govt houses
Chandigarh, December 10
Acting on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the House Allotment Committee and the Engineering Department of the UT, during a special drive to check the misuse and sub-letting of government houses for commercial purposes, detected 10 cases of the misuse or subletting of the houses. Incidentally, lower-category houses were checked during the drive.

UT fails to declare Sukhna eco-sensitive zone

Nearly two years have passed but the UT Administration has failed to declare an eco-sensitive zone in the Sukhna catchment area that falls in the Union Territory. With the declaration of an eco-sensitive zone in the catchment area, not only the forest area will be conserved but it will also help in restricting the haphazard construction around the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary, as all the activities will be regulated by the administration in the area.

MC to hand over 2 parking lots to Sec 17 traders
Chandigarh, December 10
The Municipal Corporation has decided to hand over two underground parking lots in Sector 17 to traders. The MC has already signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the traders of Sector 17. The issue regarding the handing over of the parking lots would come up during a meeting of the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) meeting on December 11.

Jyoti murder Case
Police given 3-day ultimatum
Panchkula, December 10
In the Jyoti murder case, a social organisation, “Crime against Women”, today met ACP Virender Sangwan and told him to solve the case within three days or face protests. “We have assured them that the murderers will be arrested soon. Our investigations are on, rather at the final stage. We are doing our best to solve the case,” said Virender.

Workshop for ITBP held at GMCH-32
A workshop was organised for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, here today. The workshop aimed at enhancing the knowledge and strengthening the skills of ITBP personnel posted all over the country. It was conducted with the coordination of the DIG, ITBP, and Prof Raj Bahadur, Director-Principal GMCH-32. The training focused on proper handling of patients in field, near mountains, in deep sea and even on borders. The workshop was the first-of-its-kind in this belt where trauma, life-saving procedures, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and emergency transportation were taught for 8 hours.

Unannounced power cuts irk Mohali residents

Unannounced power cuts continue to plague the town, causing inconvenience to the residents and hitting work in homes, offices and the commercial areas. The local Electricity Department officials expressed helplessness over the situation and said they were following the orders of the power controller based in Patiala.

BJP infighting comes to fore

Infighting within the local unit of the BJP came to the fore today when a senior leader, Harmohan Dhawan, staged a protest outside the Sector 33 office of the BJP against the ongoing intra-party election process of the local unit. Harmohan, who led the protest, today claimed that the party high command had stayed the ongoing election process.

Another councillor resigns from MC panel
Chandigarh, December 10 As the Municipal Corporation has failed to remove encroachments from the city, nominated councillor DS Sandhu has also resigned from the membership of the Enforcement Committee of the civic body.

250 officers attend seminar on TDS

The Income Tax Department today organised a seminar on tax deduction at source (TDS) and tax collection at sources (TCS). Around 250 officers from the Central and the state government attended the seminar.

Students of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, Chandigarh, display certificates received during a state-level science exhibition. Chandigarh: The primary wing students of AKSIPS Smart School, Sector 41, paid a tribute to the country through various performances. The event, “Incredible India”, saw students depicting the golden era of India, rise of Mughal empire, and India’s struggle for freedom through dance performances, songs and acts.

The Panjab University’s decision to reconduct the internal tests for the students of centre for social work who were absent earlier led to an argument when some students claimed they were not informed about the exam being conducted again today.

A student of University Business School (UBS) at Panjab University bagged a pay package of Rs 7 lakh offered by Mahindra and Mahindra on the third day of the placement drive. Future Genrale also visited the department to hire students on an annual package of Rs 6 lakh. The company conducted the recruitment process till late evening. Student placement coordinator Anirban Saha said the results will be declared tomorrow.

250 receive Rs 6,000 annual scholarship
Chandigarh, December 10
Around 250 students from various colleges affiliated to Panjab University have received an annual scholarship of Rs 6,000. In a meeting held today, the Dean College Development Council approved the scholarships for 150 meritorious students, 18 students under the single girl child category and 40 students each under handicapped and sports quota.

To mark Anti-Corruption Day, the Saupin's Community Service Organisation, Chandigarh and Mohali, organised a rally in Sector 19 here today. During the event, students presented a street play and song performances to spread awareness on the rampant corruption. The event threw light on a study conducted by Transparency International's in 2008. The study had reported that around 40 per cent of the Indians had a first-hand experience of paying bribes or using a contact to get a job done in a public office. Anti Corruption Day is observed on December 9 around the globe.

Youth run over by train, dies
Dera Bassi, December 10
A 24-year-old youth was run over by the Himalayan Queen train near Lalru this morning. The deceased has been identified as Vikram, a resident of Lalru. The accident occurred around 10am when the youth was reportedly trying to cross the track. The body was handed over to the relatives after conducting an autopsy.

PIL against nominated councillors dismissed
Chandigarh, December 10
The Punjab and Haryana High Court today dismissed a petition challenging the voting rights and nominations of nine councillors in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation by the UT Administration.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice AK Sikri and Justice RK Jain dismissed the petition on the grounds of locus standi of the petitioner.

HC reserves order on Deshraj's bail plea
Chandigarh, December 10
Vehemently opposing the bail plea of under-suspension Superintendent of Police of Chandigarh Deshraj Singh, the CBI today said he was likely to influence the complainant in the case. Taking up the matter, the Punjab and Haryana High Court reserved the order on Deshraj Singh's bail plea. The order is expected to be pronounced on December 12.

Thieves steal cable; BSNL services hit
Chandigarh, December 10
Thieves stole around 800 pairs of BSNL cables and caused inconvenience to more than 200 residents of Sector 20 last night. The theft snapped the connectivity of more than 600 telephone connections in Sector 20B and 20C. The theft came to light when agitated residents started making queries to the BSNL authorities in Sector 17.

Tantrik held for abducting girl
Chandigarh, December 10
The UT police today arrested a self-styled tantrik, identified as Ashiq Qureshi, from Mumbai for abducting a minor girl and keeping her in confinement for more than 17 days. The police brought him on transit remand from Mumbai.

For Prabhsukhan Singh and Sumit Rathi, there is nothing beyond their favorite sport ‘soccer’. Before leaving their hometown, the duo had never thought of making such fame in soccer, at the age of 11. Goalkeeper Prabhsukhan and defender Summit, trainees of Chandigarh Football Academy (CFA), have achieved laurels after bagging the title of best players, in the recently held 58th National School Games of soccer for boys (U-14). The team won the championship after defeating West Bengal, in the exciting finals that was decided in the tie-breaker.

For the fifth year in a row, athletes of SGGS Khalsa College, Sector 26, made the college proud after winning the team championship during the Annual Athletics Meet of the Panjab University, here today. The team bagged the championship in the men’s category. The SGGS Khalsa College, Mahilpur, and DAV College, Sector 10, secured second and third places, respectively, whereas the team of Post Graduate Government College, Sector 11, managed to attain fourth place in the event. Guru Nanak Girls College, Ludhiana, successfully won the team championship of Women’s category while Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, secured second place. The SGGS Khalsa College, Mahilpur, and GTB Khalsa College, Dasuya, finished third and fourth, respectively.

Motocross race to begin on Dec 14
Chandigarh, December 10
The 4th edition of Thunderbolt OYA Autocross and Motocross will be held from December 14 to 16, at the grounds of Yadavindra Public School (YPS), Mohali here. The Old Yadvindrians Association (OYA), the alumnus of Yadvindra Public School will conduct the event. The scrutiny for the two-wheelers and four-wheelers will take place on December 14, as the event will have about 145 qualifying rounds in 13 categories on December 15. On December 16, top six qualifiers in each category will vie for the top honours of the OYA Autocross and Motocross.

Abhijit Chadha bags PGTI's Emerging Player of the Year title

Chandigarh golfer Abhijit Singh Chadha bagged the Professional Golf Tour of India's (PGTI) Emerging Player of the Year title after ending year with earnings of Rs 17,93,478 in his rookie season as a professional. The lanky Chadha, one of the longest hitters on the tour, had the highest prize money earnings among all the rookies in the 2012 PGTI season.

In the first match of St Kabir Soccer Trophy, the St Xavier’s School defeated St John’s School by 2-1, here today. Tejvir put his team in a commanding position after scoring in the second minute while Udit doubled the lead in the 43rd minute. For St John’s, the Nalin reduced the margin in eth 53rd minute. In another match, the team of Saupin’s school routed Ashianaby 2-0 with Aryaman and Sujal scoring one goal each.
