Heroin worth Rs 60 cr seized in Ferozepur
Ferozepur, November 7 Giving details, SSP Varinder Pal Singh said following intelligence inputs regarding arrival of a consignment of contraband from Pakistan, the police was tracking some drug peddlers for the last few days. The SSP said that today in the morning, a special squad of police along with the CI sleuths had laid a trap near village Wahka under Mamdot police station when they spotted three motorcycle-borne persons coming from the border side. The SSP said when those persons spotted the police team, they tried to flee leaving the motorcycle behind. However, two persons, identified as Sucha Singh, a resident of Palla Megha and Angrej Singh, a resident of Jhugge Kishore Singh, were apprehended while the third accomplice, identified as Bohar Singh, managed to escape, he said. The SSP said a plastic bag containing 12 packets of heroin weighing one kg each worth Rs 60 crores was allegedly recovered from the duo which they had brought from across the border. During the interrogation, the cross-border drug peddlers confessed that they had received the consignment yesterday at night and it was to be delivered to another party the next day. The SSP said Sucha Singh had crossed over to Pakistan several times in the past and had stayed there for two months last year. "He had developed a lot of contacts with smugglers operating from across the fence," he added. About the modus operandi, the SSP said the consignment was retrieved from the fencing using a plastic pipe to evade any electric shock. The police was working on some more leads to track down the nexus between the cross-border drug peddlers and the kingpin behind the entire drug racket. The police also recovered two .32 bore country-made pistols and arrested two persons in this connection. Sources said the police was trying to establish the purpose of bringing the firearms, which had been reportedly procured from a town in Uttar Pradesh (UP). The SSP said the police has also received some inputs regarding the use of Indian SIMs by the Pak-based
operatives. |

Proposed earth-filled flyovers draw flak from Moga residents
Moga, October 7 The flyovers will be a part of the Ludhiana-Talwandi Bhai section in the four-laning of the national highway-95 being constructed by Essel Infrastructure Limited for a total length of 78-kms under NHDP
Phase-III. The project is being promoted by the Essel Group of Companies and is estimated to cost around Rs 750 crores. Senior leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Jathedar Tota Singh said the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) should construct the flyovers on pillars, which would not only help in managing the traffic but also solve the problem of parking. "I have asked the District Magistrate-cum-commissioner of the local corporation Arshdeep Singh Thind to oppose the proposed earth filling flyovers in the larger interest of the residents and pass a resolution for constructing it on pillars within the local civic body limits," he said. Tota Singh said there is already an alternative arrangement in the shape of a ring road and bypass to facilitate the entire flow of traffic from Rajasthan-Bathinda-Kotkapura and Sangrur-Barnala. "The government can strengthen and widen these ring roads, which will cost less in comparison to the flyovers," he said. Dwarka Bansal, chairman, Citizens' Welfare Committee, demanded that the NHAI should demarcate the centre of the 198-feet wide highway within the municipal limits before proceeding with the construction work. "The level of the road to be constructed should also be made public to the inhabitants running business establishments on both the sides so that they could raise the floor level of their buildings accordingly. The already existing manholes of the drainage system should also be raised before levelling the service lanes," he said. Kamlesh Shukla, assistant project manager, Essel Infrastructure Limited, said the company would construct three earth-filled flyovers by giving three under-passes for the local traffic within the municipal limits. "We will also provide a two-metre wide space for electrical/fibre optic utility and 1.25-metre wide space for water and sewerage pipeline," he said. Additional Deputy Commissioner-cum-Joint Commissioner of the MC, Dr Joram Beda claimed the local body would address all the problems of the city residents and end the confusion created by the proposed flyovers. |

Cancel district status of Muktsar: DC office staff
Muktsar, November 7 Today was the 17th anniversary of the district status granted to Muktsar. As per the data provided by the employees union, the functioning of district was being managed by a mere 52 employees, whereas 225 are required. It means the district is functioning with nearly four times less staff than required according to the norms. "We have adopted all methods in the past but to no avail. So, finally we have unanimously passed a resolution to seek cancellation of the district status of Muktsar, so that the people can at least get better services," said Varinder Dhosiwal, general secretary of the union. "The entire area should be merged with other districts sharing boundaries with Muktsar. Even a legislator has agreed to support us and raise the issue in the coming session of the Vidhan Sabha," he said. He further said if one compares the situation of Muktsar with other districts like Mansa, Barnala, Tarn Taran and Mohali, Pathankot and Fazilka, they appear to be faring better. "We are surprised to see the attitude of the SAD-BJP government. In the last six years, the ruling Badals have sanctioned funds for the development of their home district, but they always forgot to fill up the posts," said Dhosiwal. The activists of the union suggested that if the state government was unable to fill the vacant posts then the staff already working at Suvidha Centre should be given government jobs. |
