Chakrata Road traders fed up with MDDA promises
Dehradun October 18 If the MDDA was to revive this plan, then traders should not have been kept in the dark for almost one year. Now they have built their shops, though illegally without clearing maps from the MDDA, on Chakrata Road, which would again be dismantled. They waited for facilities like electricity, water, lifts, toilet etc in the MDDA shopping complex and had to ultimately come back to Chakrata after a passage of five to six months when their business did not take off in the complex building. The complex, too, needs immediate attention. Those 18 shopkeepers who had no way out but to run their business from there are waiting for basic amenities. President of the Chakrata Traders’ Association Shashi Kant Goyal said the MDDA had failed to deliver the goods it promised in the government order (GO) on Chakrata widening policy. “We were given much less land in the shops distributed in the new shopping complex vis-a-vis what we owned on Chakrata Road, though we were promised equal measurement. The allotment of shops was not done serial-wise as it was on Chakrata Road. The MDDA also did not clear our maps for new buildings. The assurance that half of the road which came under nazul land would be converted into freehold was not fulfilled either.” He said those traders who had already deposited 25 per cent of the total value for freehold status were still waiting for more than a decade. He added the deadline of constructing new widened road by June, too, could not be met. He stated that if the MDDA officials could not fulfil any of the promises made by it, then the traders could not believe them blindly and put their business on stake, which, with great difficulty, had gained some momentum. Rajesh Goyal, another shopkeeper, said the shopkeepers should be permitted to undertake the construction of uniform-looking buildings themselves. The MDDA should not play any role in this. There had been so many glitches in the Chakrata widening plan that Sundaram himself admitted, saying: “First a rehabilitation policy should have been framed, only then the shops should have been demolished. But it had been done the other way round, which has created turmoil."
"The remaining parts of the demolished buildings which were broken had become vulnerable. The new constructions above some of them have not been undertaken properly and they have become unsafe. The buildings give a haphazard look. Traffic chaos still prevails as there is no parking space as yet. The shopkeepers are not ready to leave 2.5-metre space for corridor and parking. The Chakarata vision in its present form look dilapidated,” Sundaram added. He said he could not take responsibility or do anything about the decisions taken by his predecessors but would do his best to convince traders about the re-development plan, which was the need of the hour.
