Abulkhurana drain
Abohar, October 9 The drain had attracted attention in September last year when surplus water from the drains originating in the Lambi area was diverted to it, resulting in flood fury. Standing cotton and other crops worth an estimated Rs 5 crore in as many as 20 villages were washed away and scores of houses had collapsed. The officials had informed Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal during his visit to village Wahabwala that the Abulkhurana drain was constructed in 1997. Later, the Drainage Department submitted a proposal to widen it in the year 2004 but none of the successive governments allotted the required funds. In the first phase, the government earmarked Rs 13 crore to widen the drain from 50 feet to 74 feet, covering 25 kilometers of the length. In the second phase, work to replace the outlived cement pipes by two feet wide water courses, after raising small bridges over the drain, is in progress. A media team was told by the local farmers near village Dharampura today that owing to the sub-standard construction, cracks have appeared and water leaks from the 9 inch thick sidewalls. Water also accumulates as the level of the floor bed in the water courses near RD 62500 and RD 62897 has not been maintained. No gadget was found at the site to clean the grey sand before mixing it with cement. The masons conceded they had no technical guidance to carry out the work. An employee of the drainage department, who arrived after learning about the presence of the media team, said the contractors would be directed to be careful. In the evening XEN, Drainage Department, Gulshan Nagpal said in a press release that payments to the contractors would be made after checking the quality of construction and no bungling would be allowed. |

As per the details, PUDA has recommended the registration of cases against 10 persons who have allegedly carved out colonies in an illegal manner. Punjab and Haryana High Court had announced the judgment in favour of PUDA and awarded punishment and imposed penalty on six colonisers. Besides, cases against another six persons are pending in the court. Information revealed that a woman, who is among the colonizers, has been declared a proclaimed offender. The case against one person has been dropped following his death. On the directions of the senior authorities, PUDA has withdrawn the case against another woman colonizer. The case against one more coloniser was not admitted by the court due to technical discrepancies. "Following the action initiated by the authorities, the mushrooming of illegal colonies has come to a halt. The prices of plots in these colonies have also come down following a ban on registration by the state government," said Chetiwal. |

Kinnow growers protest unavailability of space in Abohar grain market
Abohar, October 9 The protesters shouted slogans against the Market Committee that failed to arrange the yard despite recovering four per cent market fee from the sellers. They regretted that the powerful lobby of commission agents in connivance with the farmers had unloaded paddy on the pretext of drying it, covering each available feet in the covered sheds. The area under the covered sheds has not been expanded for the last six years even when a fruit glut was expected. The arrival of the fruit is expected to pick up in the next few days but it might not be auctioned as the sheds remain occupied due to moisture in the paddy yield. Notably, the commission agents had on Friday organised a protest complaining that the kinnow growers had occupied three of the four covered sheds. As the administration was unable to find a viable solution, the farmers today filled all the floors under the sheds with paddy. On the other hand, most of the fruit growers have chosen to get citrus and kinnow fruit plucked without waiting for its ripening as it is being marketed in metropolitan cities for extracting juice. Market Committee secretary Jagdish Beniwal assured the protesters that they would be permitted to stack plastic crates in the cotton yard since the arrival of the "white gold" was yet to pick up. |
