Together we can

Women are trained to be givers in our men-centric world, but with changing times they expect the men to share equal responsibility

Man's love is of man's life a part; it is a woman's whole existence, wrote Lord Byron, one of the most widely read British poets, a few centuries ago. The very sentiment is repeated by one of the finest American actress Meryl Streep, when she recently gave the statement, “Women make a religion of relationships. They study how to make them work, while men do not, as a generalisation.”

Do women give more in relationships? Are they able to, especially now, in the changed scenario when they also go out and handle work pressure, while also shouldering the household responsibility? We check out…

Women are more giving by nature, believes Garima Singh, Additional Commissioner, Income Tax. “For a beautiful, perfect relationship both the partners need to put in efforts,” says Garima. Things might not pan out to be a total 50:50 ratio always though. “So it’s important to understand each others’ perspective towards jobs as well as life. That works in the longer run,” says this officer, whose husband SSP Naunihal Singh also agrees to the fact.

Women are more giving, reiterates Deepa Sharma, a content writer. And, that’s true not only in case of relationships but also career and everyday chores. “Forget women being physically weaker, they are stronger, ever ready to go the extra mile in whatever they take up,” says Deepa. This is also true in relationships, “I wouldn’t be too harsh on men; they do their bit. Women put in more though,” she says.

Child-rearing, cooking, tending to the house as well as family members is so sociologically ingrained in women that it comes naturally to them. But with changing times, this is undergoing a change as well. Sculptor Shiv Singh and his German wife Gisela Singh have lived a rather conservative life; he is engrossed in work while she looks after the house. “One needs to put in efforts for anything one wants here in India. Women play the harder part because they bear children. Probably that makes it difficult for women to say ‘adios amigo’,” says Gisela. Being married to an artist, she has had her share of challenges that are well-appreciated by her husband. “Gisela manages the home without any help. Not working ensures that she gets time to herself as well,” says Shiv Singh. “Things are changing fast though. Caught up in the career web, I guess women are giving lesser time to relationships,” he adds.

Neha and Sumeet Gill, both assistant professors, are new-age young couple who believe in equality of sexes. “In a relationship, both partners need to invest equally,” says Neha. “Women are trained to be more sacrificing than men; but if that is the case in your relationship, then it is adjustment not marriage. Women might pitch in more but there should be equal commitment from both ends,” she adds.

Her husband admires her and women in general for all they are capable of, “Men generally, including me, shoulder responsibility towards family and relations only occasionally. It’s women for whom it’s a daily battle, to do the double shifts — at home and work.”

But then not all women are ready to be on the pedestal and enjoy the adulation. Actor Gul Panag, who married her beau Rishi in a dashing Bullet-style ceremony, puts it plainly and clearly, “In any relationship it’s 50:50 partnership, especially marriage.” Husbands, wake up!

Language no bar
Manpriya Singh

Discovery Science will now run a parallel 24-hour channel in Hindi

Language need not be barrier for anything, the least for science. The fact that there cannot be an easy Hindi word for remote control and so many of its like, need not be a reason to not go ahead with the rest of the translation. Come October and Discovery Science will have a parallel 24-hour channel running in Hindi. “Our language experience worked well for other Discovery channels. So we wanted to go ahead and give our viewers unbarred access to Discovery Science,” shares Rahul Johri, vice-president, Discovery Networks, Asia-Pacific.

He adds, “Moreover our shows are mostly commentaries. It was only a matter of giving commentaries in the native language. It’s not like two Japanese people talking in some other language that there might be a problem with establishing a connect with the audience.”

As for the technical words for giving insights into science, they have kept the language intact. “If it is a highly specific word for which the usage in Hindi is not very common, we keep it in English.” Those addicted to the thought-provoking and interesting insights into science, there are many reasons to cheer. “We are coming up with lots of interesting new programmes and shows. There is Space Week starting from the October 1. Space is a favourite subject with many people.” He adds, “We’ll also be starting some more interesting shows, which are likely to have a mass appeal. For instance, shows that reveal ‘how a refrigerator is made’ or ‘how a guitar is made’.”

The topics are as diverse as those related to the human body, astronomy, genetics, exploration, medical advances, food and space, among others. There is a bit of information, much to the chagrin of daily soaps. “I don’t know what they mean by the word commercial. Our channel makes pure business sense. We want science to reach every nook and corner of the country. The channel already has a large fan-following.”

It boils down to character...
Jasmine Singh

Actor Manav Vij, who will soon be seen in Punjabi movie Sarsa, says he likes to do character roles…

It is experimentation in life and profession that keeps most people going. It is the risk that adds that extra zing to their life. And when these people take to the silver screen, all they care about is the ‘performance’.

Manav Vij, television and Punjabi film actor, is all for roles that will give him a wide space to explore his talent. And he does so with his upcoming movie Sarsa, which has been directed by Jatinder Mauhar and stars Gul Panag with Kartar Cheema.

“After my Punjabi film Mannat, I did not have the time to do films because I was busy with television. Now that I am coming back to Punjabi cinema, I want the role to be good,” shares Manav, who credits his wife, television actress Meher Vij, for advising him to take up strong character roles. He laughs at the mention, “It is Meher who asked me to focus on character roles because it is the characters that make a film. And I couldn’t have lost the opportunity of working with Jatinder.”

Manav shot to fame with his role in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. “I was working under contract with Ekta Kapoor, only focusing on serials. For an actor, it is always important to explore other avenues, so I started to explore myself in various other mediums.” The exploration took Manav to an altogether different field though — singing. “I have been working on my debut Punjabi album. The songs are ready and I will release it soon,” says this homeopathy doctor from Ferozepur.

Every actor goes through a journey and Manav is no different; films, TV and back to films, the actor sees this as a part of his journey. “I have to go through and also stop at the required pit-stops. I want to do good Punjabi films like Sarsa,” he adds. This doe-eyed actor plays a positive character in the film Sarsa, which is based on students’ politics. He is doing another Punjabi film titled Burrah. “Punjabi cinema is doing fairly well today. New directors, script-writers and new themes, it is definitely in a flourishing phase.”

If your birthday is October 2...

Your birthday falls this year on the third day of Shradh Paksha[fortnight of Shradhs spanning from September 30 to October 15].

The day assures much scope at work front. You need to be willing to make adjustments in your personal life. In general, this year will not be a auspicious to start new ventures. You will speak to a superior about a misunderstanding, which has put you in a bad light. Fortunately you will manage to clear things up. You are hesitant and impatient towards a friend who is not interested in you. Don't wear yourself down and look elsewhere.

Your productivity will fall if you push yourself relentlessly. Strike a balance between work and building work relationships.

You will face every single decision with determination and energy, not letting others intervene. Financial security is a fundamental pillar of your existence; you will sleep easy even if you have to face some problems.

Soon you will be asked to justify yourself. Minor problems threaten to generate bigger obstacles that could slow you down. Do not tolerate any pressures from outsiders.  Do not let your efforts go waste now that you have laid your elaborate groundwork.

You may have to spend extra on home repairs or investments. You might have to balance your choices. Children, elders, spouse may require more attention and expense.

Do not allow sudden gains to tempt you. You share a joyful relationship, let not the pursuit of money or career reduce your association to mundane level.

You are likely to make new friends, especially if they are Libra, Gemini or Aries. They can be helpful in a wide variety of ways, especially to 'inspire' you at a time.

A hectic schedule might affect your health. You are required to be cautious regarding your health during December. Travelling can make you realise how much there is to see and do in this life.

Malaika’s hidden talent

Fit and fine: Malaika Arora Khan

Malaika Arora Khan who is currently seen on Colors’ India’s Got Talent’s (IGT) is a sexy svelte beauty. She truly epitomises the phrase… beauty with class. We catch up with the diva in a candid chat…

What made you come back with yet another reality show?

This show is different from what I have done before. It has talent from all around, even from the remote places. It has a connect with the masses. It is a different experience for me and I am enjoying it.

Did you miss being part of Jhalak this season?

I had a great time last year on the sets of Jhalak. I did miss being part of the fifth season. But, it’s even more fun to be a part of IGT as it’s a different space altogether.

Of late, you have been associated with reality shows. Don’t you miss acting?

I have never been an actor, so I do not miss acting. I have always been associated with dancing, which is something that I love doing. And I will dance till I can.

Do you have any hidden talents?

Well, not many people know that I play flute very well. I started playing it in school as I was part of my school band. I usually play the flute to unwind from my days work. I also love cooking and enjoy adventure sports. So, when I am not working I do these things.

How’s Dabangg 2 coming along?

Excitement is at its peak. We are waiting for its release which will happen sometime in December.

Gurmeet wins Jhalak…

Step up: Gurmeet Choudhary
Step up: Gurmeet Choudhary

Television actor Gurmeet Choudhary and his choreographer Shampa Sonthalia won the fifth season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. He defeated Rashmi Desai and Rithvik Dhanjani and took home the trophy and a cash prize of Rs 40 lakh.

A novice and a stiff dancer, Gurmeet wooed the audiences and judges with his moves and stylish grooves to pip Rashmi and Rithvik with the maximum votes.

Gurmeet, who earned fame as Ram of TV show Ramayan, started his journey of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5 from day one as the other two finalists came as wild card entries midway in the show. The judges’ panel included Madhuri Dixit, Karan Johar and Remo D’Souza.

Gurmeet’s popularity won him the much-needed audience votes and his choreographer Shampa groomed him to get him the thumbs up from judges. He also suffered a shoulder injury, but he bounced back soon enough.

Gurmeet displayed performances ranging from robotic hip-hop, semi-classical moves and international dance forms like rumba and Paso Doble.

“It feels really great. After working for four to five months, this journey has finally come to an end. Mehnat rang layi hai (hard work has paid off). The trophy belongs to my fans who have voted for me. Public is the winner of Jhalak... not me,” Gurmeet said after winning the show. The show started June 16 with 13 contestants.

The grand finale evening not only witnessed some wonderful acts from the three finalists and former contestants of this season, but also saw Madhuri and Sridevi, once big screen rivals, share the stage.

Doc Talk
Erase the line
Dr Vikas Sharma

Most people get tensed looking at the mirror while finding visible marked lines for the first time on their face. Crow's feet are referred to the clusters of wrinkles that appear around the outer corners of eyes as skin ages and lose elasticity. These are an early manifestation of the aging process for men and women. These wrinkles are usually made up of a few lines branching out, and they resemble the foot of a bird, hence the name crow's feet.

Because skin around the eyes is very thin, it loses collagen more quickly and tends to wrinkle more easily. The skin around the eyes is also delicate and contains less moisture than other areas, so the lines seem more visible. Though this is inevitable whether one likes it or not, the problem becomes bigger when it appears earlier than expected.

Watch out

Crow’s feet are inevitable with age, but environmental exposure and certain habits can make them appear sooner than expected.

nGenes plays a role in the formation of both crow’s feet and baggy eyes.

nStress, smoking, poor diet and sun exposure can all accelerate the aging process and encourage crow's feet and dark circles. By taking care of yourself, you can avoid the premature development of these tell-tale signs of aging.

Prevention is better than cure

One way to avoid crow's feet would be to never smile, laugh, frown or squint. Because this is not possible, most of us have to look into other ways of fending these off.

There is an entire skin care industry built upon anti-aging creams, crow's feet can not usually be completely removed, but they can be reduced through medical procedures or anti-ageing treatments and lifestyle modifications.

  • Getting a reduction in crow’s feet involves using a topical lotion containing peptides, wearing a high-quality sunscreen daily and avoiding extended exposure to the sun.
  • Drinking plenty of water daily and adding anti-oxidants in the diet is always beneficial.
  • Yoga and facial exercises also play a beneficial role.
  • Wearing a good moisturiser around the eyes is of paramount importance.
  • Doctors use capacitive radiofrequency technology to lift the skin and smooth wrinkles. It's especially effective on crow's feet. Patients feel a warm sensation as the CRF penetrates the skin.
  • Laser treatments are effective to some extent especially fractional laser resurfacing technology.
  • One has to be extremely careful when choosing treatments for skin around the eyes. Shop wisely and look for creams that contain active agents like alpha hydroxy acids and collagen peptides - prescription creams under the supervision of a certified dermatologist.

The ‘in’ side Sukhmani
Layers of comfort

It is said that a third of our life is spent snoozing. Isn’t this enough of an excuse to transform your bed into a comfortable and stylish oasis? You can now recreate those wonderful beds that you see in shops and catalogues with the help of the following tips—

  • The mattress is the foundation of the bed. No matter how much effort you put in, if the mattress is broken or is sagging, you cannot make your bed look good. Replace old mattresses before you begin layering your bed. Over your mattress add a foam cover to add that extra bit of luxury.
  • Pillows are the key to a good sleep. Invest in only the best. Choose a pillow that supports your head and neck properly.
  • Sheets will be the closest thing to your skin while you sleep so make sure they are soft. Cent per cent cotton sheets are the best kind of sheets to sleep on.
  • The next layer on your bed is a soft blanket. Choose cotton or a woolen depending on the time of the year.
  • A bedspread, quilt or duvet is the top layer of your bed and the visual statement that centers your room. Choose a cover that pulls the layers of your bed together and complements the colours of your room.
  • Accessories the bed with funky pillows and cushions to complete the look. Now that you know the layers, here are a few pointers to keep in mind while putting the whole look together.
  • Combine different patterns. Everything need not be all matching. Play with the scale of the patterns and mix and match different colours. If you have a bold pattern on your duvet, choose a smaller pattern or stripes for the accent pillows.
  • Start with a solid colour fitted and top sheet with matching standard pillow cases to give the eyes a place to rest and emphasize the patterns that they will be layered with. White is always a great, clean and refreshing base to begin with.
  • Next add your quilt. You could go with a multi-coloured quilt or go for a single colour using the texture to add visual interest.
  • Fold the top quarter of your sheet and quilt down past your pillows to create a nice visual break in pattern.
  • Now we come to the pillows. Choose pillow shams that will match your quilt. They don't have to be an exact replica but should play off each other in colour, style or texture. Your shams will be placed furthest back against your headboard and your white or solid coloured pillow case will go in front of them.
  • Fold up a duvet or blanket at the end of your bed that contrasts your quilt and pillows as an accent.
  • Finally add in a small mix and match throw pillow or two in front of your white fitted pillows and you're done!

Stress buster

Every area of our life is affected by stress and each one of us has created one’s own way of dealing with it. Pet passion
Bundle of Jo(e)y
Manpriya Singh

Staying in hostels and working in the metropolitans, there was only an in-between time when they could have a pet. Did the boys not make the most of it?

"Our parents were a little apprehensive initially and before this we were in hostels, so we anyway couldn’t keep a dog. Once I was in college and one fine day, my brother got him,” laughs Bhavpreet Singh, software engineer and former student of Rayat and Bahra College of Engineering.

To have a dog, you don’t need a reason, to not have one, excuses galore. He adds, “A new house had to have a new dog. Also I always wanted a dog in the house.” That’s how the household got introduced to the now one-and-half-year-old, black Labrador called Joey.

Love me, love my dog

Does anyone picture the iconic satellite character from Friends? He shares, “We thought of a couple of names, toyed with some of them. I even discussed it with my friends. As for this name, it just happened. But it is definitely based on the character of Joey Tribbiani from Friends and it is so apt.” He adds, “Because that’s exactly the role he plays for me and my brother Amreek, an aspiring cricketer.”

We guess he missed out on the home front. The place where they run around, wagging tails, all ears, giving company, making their presence felt. Some of the many things that differentiate a household with a pet from the one without none!

Yours faithfully

Like someone once said, “We’ve begun to long for the pitter-patter of little feet. So, we bought a dog. Well, it’s cheaper and we get more feet.”

Recalls Bhavpreet, “When we got Joey home, he was really little. He couldn’t even walk. We always had cats as kids but that was by chance. A cat delivered five kittens in the courtyard. But we decided to have this dog,” He adds, “What I like the most about Joey is the little things he does all day. It could be something as mundane as eating. Then things like wagging his tail, crawling about the entire house.” That’s not where the madness ends. “Give him a ball and see him go crazy, that’s the best time to spend with him and also play and enjoy with him.”

Friendly all day and slightly cranky at night, that’s him for you. Not that anyone’s complaining. “Around three am in the morning, he gets restless, needs something to eat. But that’s alright.”

Master Chef
Mmmm.....mushrooms!
Kandla Nijhowne

Okay okay, I know this is a fungus of sorts, but I love mushrooms! Mushrooms can provide more than just taste and texture for our meals. They actually have a surprisingly high nutritional value too. They are excellent for weight loss and lowering blood pressure. It may surprise you to learn that mushrooms. Out rank bananas on the potassium chart ! So, people with hypertension or a high risk of stroke can enjoy tremendous health benefits from a regular dose of mushrooms in their diet. My all-time favourite is this delicious creamy mushroom soup which is essentially a French recipe. Given that, it has a glug of white wine in it, but that can be replaced with a vegetable or chicken stock. The egg yolks also help make the soup richer but can be omitted where necessary.

Method

Melt the butter in a pan, add the mushrooms and cook them for 5 minutes stirring constantly. Add the garlic and herbs, then the chicken or vegetable stock. Raise the heat and bring it to a boil. Add the wine, or a similar quantity of stock. Remove the mushroom mixture from the heat. Ladle out half a cup of hot broth and whisk together with the egg yolks until the mixture becomes frothy. Gradually pour the egg mixture into the mushroom mixture, stirring constantly to prevent curdling. Return the pan to the heat, add the milk, salt and pepper and allow it to come to simmer. With the help of a slotted spoon, pull out a few slices of mushrooms to use as a garnish. Keep aside. Puree the rest of the mixture till smooth. Reheat uncovered, stirring constantly. Remember, the soup must not boil beyond this point or it may curdle. Serve garnished with the sliced mushrooms.

(Nijhowne is a Chandigarh-based culinary expert)

Bollywood bound

New turn: Prithviraj
New turn: Prithviraj

Southern superstar Prithviraj, who makes his Bollywood debut with Anurag Kashyap's Aiyyaa, is keen to work with the big names of Hindi cinema.

"I want to work with all the Bollywood biggies. In that sense I am selfish as an actor," he said in an interview.

The actor is a popular name down South and has successful films like Stop Violence, Thirakkatha, Mozhi and Chocolate to his credit. However, it seems his Hindi film career is already on a roll, even before the release of Aiyyaa. He is currently busy shooting for Yash Raj Films' Aurangzeb and is in talks for his third film.

"I just got back from Delhi after shooting a few scenes for the film (Aurangzeb). We shot a couple of scenes in Mumbai and the rest will be in Delhi," he said.

Prithviraj says this is a special film for him as he had got it on the basis of his talent and not because who he is.

"It's a big privilege for me to be part of Yash Raj Films. Personally it is a great feeling, because in my entire career, Aurangzeb is a film, which I auditioned for. I got Aurangzeb not because of who I am or what I have done, but because of that audition," he said.

As far as his third Hindi film is concerned, Prithviraj refuses to divulge any details.

"I am in talks for the third film, but nothing has been confirmed yet. Once I give the go ahead, we will make the official announcement," he said.

Aiyyaa is directed by Sachin Kundalkar and stars Rani Mukerji and Prithviraj in the lead. It releases Oct 12. — IANS

Actor Vivek Oberoi, who would be a part of upcoming sequel of Krrish as the main baddie, says he loves playing negative characters. Vivek has played characters with grey shades in Company and Shootout at Lokhandwala.

Krrish 3 will continue the story of Rohit Mehra and his superhero son Krrish, after Koi...Mil Gaya and Krrish, both of which were hits. Vivek plays the villain in Krrish 3, against Hrithik. "My role in the film is something that I have never done earlier. Audience will get to see a different side of me in the film. I must say that Krrish 3 is a role of a lifetime...of a twisted villain. Manoj Bajpayee feels that he cannot advise wannabes because most of them want to ape the likes of Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan and his suggestions would fall on deaf years. "I don't think anyone wants to become Manoj Bajpayee, everyone wants to become Shah Rukh, Salman and any message from me to them will be of no value," said Manoj when he was asked what message would he like to give to youngsters who look up to him.

"It's a good film... Prakash Jha is one director whose films don't just have songs and dance, but they also have a strong storyline, strong performances, and good camera work. It's a wholesome experience. It's not just entertainment, but you also become aware about that subject," Manoj said.

Loss and gain

Actor Hugh Jackman says he only had water for 36 hours to prepare for his role in the big-screen musical adaptation of Les Miserables. The 43-year-old plays an escaped prisoner in the movie.

"Tom (Hooper, director) said, 'You know, when we find you you're straight out of prison, which is effectively a labour camp. I need you to be worryingly thin, sunken cheeks.

"I was like, 'Oh my god!' So I worked for the beginning of that film — I went for the old water diet thing where it's nothing but water for 36 hours," he said.

Jackman is currently working on re-gaining the weight he lost as he is finally ready to shoot The Wolverine.

"I've just come back from eating my eighth chicken breast of the day. I'm 14kg heavier than I was three months ago, so my body is going to need a break after this one," he added. — PTI

Payback time

Singer Chris Brown has reportedly completed his community service sentence for his 2009 assault on ex-girlfriend Rihanna, but court is yet to give its views. The 23-year-old was charged for domestic abuse and was placed on probation along with a mandatory sentence of 1,400 hours community service. At least one-third of Brown's community service hours were completed at a Virginia daycare centre where his mother once worked.

However, prosecutors and Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg are now challenging the validity of Brown's recorded hours. Schnegg has described the community service reports as somewhat cryptic, though the court has yet to divulge what the discrepancies are. — IANS
