Cash van heist: Four robbers identified;
2 empty cash chests found
New Delhi, September 29 Commissioner of Police Neeraj Kumar said that several people are being questioned. But so far no arrest has been made. When asked if there are any suspects, he said, "We do not want to name anyone," said Kumar. According to Vivek Gogia, Joint Commissioner (south-western range), eight police teams, including two groups of crime branch officials, have been formed to gather intelligence. The Delhi police questioned a number of people of Hauz Rani where the robbed cash van was found abandoned. The suspects might belong to one of the robbers' gangs in western UP, said a senior police official. "The manner in which the entire episode unfolded is quite similar to the modus operandi of some UP gangs, especially those which are active in Delhi and the national capital region. We are trying to piece together the details of the entire incident with CCTV camera footage and ascertain the involvement of a particular gang. We have some clues and are working on them," said the official. Sources in the police department said the police plans to conduct raids in several parts of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh to detain people having similar criminal history. Two empty cash chests of the cash van were recovered from an area near Select City Walk (a shopping mall) in Saket this morning, the official said. "The police suspects that the robbers might have taken a rented accommodation in Malviya Nagar, as the cash van and cash chests were found in the area," the sources added. The cash was being transported by Premier Shield Pvt Ltd, a security company, from Hauz Khas branch of ICICI Bank to the Lajpat Nagar branch. After carrying out the preliminary investigations, the police does not rule out the involvement of present and former employees of the security company and have sought their assistance to prepare a list of employees' names. "Looking at the way the robbery took place, it appears that it was well-planned. The robbers were apparently aware of the route that the van took. Therefore, they were waiting for it at a petrol pump 200 m away from the spot," another official added. After waylaying the cash-van, the robbers rushed to the vehicle and forced the four occupants - guards Munna Singh and Ajab Singh, Ashok (an official of the security company) and driver Anil out at gunpoint. When Munna tried to resist, he was shot. Munna was rushed to the trauma centre, AIIMS, but succumbed to injuries last night. The robbers immediately got into the van, leaving their Hyundai Verna car bearing a Haryana registration number and sped away from the spot. A couple of hours later, the van was found abandoned without cash in Hauz Rani. The GPRS on a security guard's mobile phone left in the van helped the police trace the whereabouts of the van. A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act has been lodged at the Defence Colony police station. A forensic team has collected evidence, including fingerprints, from both the vehicles. |
It reflects city’s poor law & order: Malhotra
New Delhi, September 29 Malhotra said that the BJP had been demanding installation of CCTV cameras at all markets in the city, in front of banks, major crossings and other crowded places, but no steps had been taken by the government. "People live in fear due to the increasing incidents of daylight murder, dacoity, loot and gang rape. Yesterday's cash van robbery shows how insecure Delhiites, especially the women and senior citizens, are," he said. In addition to the office of the police commissioner of Delhi, the city has offices of the Intelligence Bureau, Central Bureau of Information, Home Ministry, Prime Minister and many other agencies connected with the security, still the Union and the city governments do not take effective steps to curb crime. "We request the Home Minister to take steps to improve the working of the Delhi police and fix responsibilities for all crimes so that Delhiites can live without fear," Malhotra added. |

Jamia brings credit transfer system at PG level
New Delhi, September 29 Under the system, students will be able to opt for courses across disciplines and faculties, thus bringing in diversity and flexibility in the academic programmes of the university. The idea is to promote interdisciplinary study by giving students a wider choice of subjects. Jamia is one of the few institutions in the country to have introduced the system at the postgraduate level. "For instance, a student doing MA from any department of the faculty of humanities & languages can now choose courses in other departments of the faculty of humanities & languages, faculty of social sciences as well as centres such as the Centre for Jawaharlal Nehru studies, centre for dalit and minorities, centre for peace & conflict resolution, centre for culture, media and governance, centre for study of comparative religion and civilization etc," explained the university spokesperson. Under the system, out of the 16 papers that a student has to study during two years of the postgraduate programme, two could be chosen from outside the department. A student can do only one such course per semester and two during the entire duration of the MA programme. The university proposes to increase the number of such courses from two to four in the future. |
