Now, pay to use
Jammu-Lakhanpur road
Jammu, September 26 The highway, which has been constructed at a cost of Rs 393.31 crore, was one of the main Centrally sponsored project approved in 2005 by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to facilitate an all-weather road to connect the state with the rest of the country. The NHAI document states that steps would be taken to recover the capital cost through toll tax by users, which would be reduced to 40 per cent of the rates when the recovery is completed. Till then, all the commercial vehicles, including trucks carrying essential commodities, will be charged for using the stretch. The fee will be charged under the National Highways Authority of India Act, 1988. Users of vehicles like cars, jeeps, vans or any other light motor vehicle will have to pay Rs 58 per trip for using the highway. On the other hand, those driving a commercial light motor vehicle, light goods vehicle or a minibus will have to shell out Rs 94. Drivers of buses and trucks will have to pay Rs 198 as the user fee. The toll plaza has been set up at Rajbagh near Kathua. “The rate of the monthly pass is Rs 200 for the year 2012-13, which can be changed every year, as per the provisions of the National Highway Fee Rules, 2008,” stated the documents. The four-laned highway was completed last year. The project was assigned to the National Highways Project (NHP) in 2005 and was completed last year. Since then, commuters have been using it for free. The highway has totally changed the travelling experience for the commuters as 12 new concrete flyovers and bridges have also been constructed over rivers such as the Ujh and seasonal nullahs at places such as Bari Brahmana, Vijaypur, Samba, Hiranagar, Rajbagh and Kalibari to make it an all-weather road. Before the project came up, suspension of the traffic on the highway during the rainy season was a routine affair. Paperwork over

BJP alleges bias with Jammu region
Jammu, September 26 Party spokesperson Ramesh Arora while reacting to the recent appointment of about 25 persons hailing from Kashmir under nursing staff category by Jammu Medical College administration alleged that Jammu-based candidates were ignored. Arora said it would create a wedge between both the regions of the state. “The Kashmir-centric approach of the government has already caused frustration among youth of the Jammu region. Not only this, the government is also planning to appoint senior doctors by violating norms for new faculty in the medical college”, he alleged. He said both the government and medical college principal should desist from such discriminatory policy and Jammu-based candidates be absorbed on priority and others thereafter following all the rules of promotion and appointment. Arora said the government should frame a policy which is not prejudicial and against the interests of Jammu region. In the past, Jammu has witnessed that during the establishment of Central University, the Kashmir-centric NC-Congress government under the leadership of Omar Abdullah had approached the Central government to get one more Central University sanctioned in violation of norms. The Jammu-based ministers, bureaucrats and senior officers of different departments are directly responsible for discrimination with Jammu. The BJP spokesperson said: “We are not against Kashmir but to give undue benefit to a particular region at the cost of others can neither be justified nor acceptable”. If they are so keen to protect the interests of Kashmir region, why Jammu should suffer at the hands of officiating principal of medical college and few bosses in the administration and political field. |

LPG distributors’ strike on October 1 leaves consumers worried
Jammu, September 26 With September 30 being a Sunday, October 1 being the day of the strike and October 2 being a national holiday, consumers are sure to face inconvenience. The three-day hiatus will add to the prevailing chaos due to rules such as no home delivery of cylinders for the time being and no access to cylinders till the completion of verification process. While the Congress-ruled states have decided to raise the cap on subsidised cylinders from six to nine, other states have been demanding a rollback of the regulation. “Already, nobody is getting cylinders here as the process of verification is cumbersome. Now, the strike will further hamper the process,” said Kuldeep Bhat, a local resident. “Everything is happening so fast that we did not get any time to prepare ourselves for the situation. They first blocked the cylinder delivery service and then started the verification process. We are running out of cooking gas and there is no way to get a new cylinder,” he said. Hundreds of people have been gathering outside the LPG agencies to get their verification process completed as soon as they can. But the impending gap of three days has raised confusion among residents. The director, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, had earlier said they were trying to bring transparency into the system so that the regulation can be implemented in a smooth and an error-free manner. |

Panthers Party to raise issue of youth in Assembly
Jammu, September 26 Addressing unemployed youth of various districts of the state, who called on him here today, Harsh Dev Singh said the ruling coalition had made loud exhortations and tall pronouncements of providing one job to each family and even promised to provide jobs to middle pass
candidates as well at the time of elections. He said the government never bothered to explain as to what happened to its slogan of one job for each family or to promise of providing eligibility to middle pass candidates for seeking government jobs or to its fast-track employment package. He said the most intriguing aspect of the matter was withholding of lists of selected candidates during the past few months in respect of posts already advertised. |
