Counting today Tribune News Service
Dehradun, September 12 Chief Election Officer Anil Sinha said the election was peaceful and 29.66 per cent polling was recorded. He added no major untoward incident, except a few minor brawls, took place at the college during the polling. Sinha said a total of 83 ballet boxes were placed at 24 booths that were part of the four zones at the college carved out for the smooth conduct of the election. He added the counting would take place tomorrow amid elaborate security arrangements. The polling started at 9.30 am in the presence of a large contingent of police both in and outside the college. Identify cards of the students were checked at the gate of the college. All roads leading to the college were barricaded to ensure that no vehicle moved close to the college campus. The polling ended at 2.30 pm. Besides the police, about 300 college staff members were on various election duties. The candidates had put up a large number of hoardings across the city, making a mockery of the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Commission for student unions’ elections. Interestingly, the college authorities had limited the poll expenses of every candidate to Rs 5,000, but canvassing by the candidates showed that the limit was not adhered to. College Principal Dr Devendra Bhasin admitted that in the absence of a full proof mechanism to check election expenses of all candidates, they may have crossed the limit. The candidates, especially those contesting for the posts of president and general secretary, used buses to ferry the voters. Main roads near the college witnessed traffic snarls as the students came in groups to cast their votes. Both Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and National Students Union of India (NSUI) have high stakes in the election as they are eyeing the president’s post. |
Drug-addict children found involved in crime
Dehradun, September 12 The police is worried that these children involved in theft cases have to be let off and restored to their parents. Reacting to Raju’s arrest, Station Police Officer, Garhi Cantonment, S Rawat said, “A teenager who commits a crime without the support of a major person is freed by the police and restored to his or her parents or a guardian. This provision of the Juvenile Justice Act is a big headache for the police, which has to keep an eye on their activities. These children have been found involved in theft cases in the city recently. Had they spent some time in the jail, the police could have got some relief.” In the same area, a minor girl duped a man of Rs 50,000 a few days ago. She diverted the attention of the man and decamped with Rs 50,000 he was carrying in a packet. Similar cases of thefts and cheating involving children have been reported from Kotwali, Prem Nagar police post and Vikasnagar. According to the police, usually rag-pickers do a recce of the area and target the house which has remained closed for many days. At times they just steal trivial things lying here and there, but in some cases they have been found to be involved in big thefts. DIG, Dehradun range, Sanjay Gunjiyal said, “We enquire about the elders of such children to find out whether they are encouraging them to commit crimes. We, thereafter, take action against them.” He said the police was bound by the Juvenile Justice Act. “The cases of such children are usually referred to the Juvenile Justice Board, which then decides upon the follow-up action. In case of those who have become compulsive criminals, showing a tendency to commit crimes again, they are sent to the Bal Sudhar Grah (children reform centre) for counseling,” he added. |
Couple arrested with bear gall bladders, costly fungi
Dehradun, September 12 The police got a tip-off that a couple from Dharchula carrying gall bladders of two bears and Keeda Jadi were on their way to Dehradun. It in assistance with the anti-poaching cell of the Uttarakhand Forest Department conducted raids on the Dehradun Railway Station and the adjoining Haridwar Railway Station. However, when the joint team failed to find the couple there, it reached the Inter State Bus Terminus in Dehradun and arrested the couple there. On preliminary interrogation, the couple was identified as Rajesh Kumar and his wife Geeta. Two gall bladders and 170 gm of Keeda Jadi were recovered from their possession. The accused disclosed that they had secured the bear gall bladders and Keeda Jadi from a woman in Pithoragarh and were in Dehradun to deliver the consignment to a man. Rajesh said the woman in Pithoragarh had promised them Rs 50,000 on the delivery of the material. Meanwhile, the forest authorities did not rule out the involvement of the couple in the illegal activities in the past as well. The recovery of gall bladders of bears comes at a time when Uttarakhand is facing a major challenge of trafficking in bear bile and the state forest authorities are even planning a bear conservation plan. While bile is extracted from the gall bladder of a bear, Keeda Jadi fetches a high price in the international market. Both bear bile and Keeda Jadi are used in the traditional Chinese medicines. |
