Shivanand flays Cong leaders supporting quarrying
Haridwar, September 8 A section of the saint leaders of the Congress have termed quarrying necessary, which has infuriated pro-Ganga activists, including Matra Sadan followers. Swami Shivanand described the statements of Congress leaders supporting quarrying on the Ganga riverbed and on the Kumbh mela land as an example of a nexus between a quarrying mafia and political class. He alleged that the same Congress leaders who had extended full support to the Matra Sadan agitation after the death of Swami Nigmanand were now involved with a quarrying mafia. Swami Shivanand said once his demand for a fair investigation into the death of Swami Nigmanand was fulfilled, eye-opener revelations related to bureaucrats, politicians and those involved in quarrying would come to light. |
Face of the week
Dehradun, September 8 “Traditional puppetry is going through difficult times with the number of its audience constantly diminishing,” said Pudumjee. He said more and more puppetry workshops would help introduce the coming generation with this traditional art form that had been a source of entertainment for people in this part of the world since ages. Pudumjee, while elaborating on puppetry, said puppets could be made from objects of daily use. To him, movement is the language of puppets. The puppeteer reminded that historically puppetry found its references in some Sanskrit and Pali texts, which were 1,500 years old. But exact period of its origin was still a subject of study, he said. Puppetry is still a source of entertainment in eight states in the country. Rajasthan, Bangalore, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa and other southern states are known for the traditional form of puppetry. However, the art had been replaced by modern puppetry, particularly in the urban areas, he stated. On efforts to promote puppetry, Pudumjee said organisations like Sangeet Natak Academy had been providing grants. He, however, asserted that traditional folk art of puppetry could only be preserved by making young minds more inclined towards it. “Workshop on puppetry should be held frequently across the country. I, through my Ishara Puppet Theatre Trust, have been doing every possible effort to ensure that puppetry survives this period of trial,” he said. Ishara Puppet Theatre Trust has been a leader in working towards social issues. It has taken up up the task of sensitising people about HIV/AIDS. It has also been holding annual puppet festival in New Delhi every year. |

Mussoorie, September 8 In the individual category, Raghav Mutneja from Wynberg Allen School stood first while Aakansha Juyal from Summer Valley and Nandish Jamwani from St. George’s School were declared joint runners up. Aashish Baweja from St. George’s was adjudged third in the debate competition. The event was organised by the State Bank of India in which schools from Dehradun and Mussoorie, namely Delhi Public School, St. Joseph’s Academy, Colonel Brown School from Dehradun and Wynberg Allen, St. Clares, St. George’s School, deliberated on the negative and positive effects of the social media in the present age. Raghav from Wynberg Allen School highlighted the disadvantages of the social networking sites and said they had become a tool for cyber bullying and rumour mongering as was evident in the recent case where people belonging to the northeast were forced to flee places in the southern states. He said the sites such as Facebook had led to a disconnect among the family members as the users instead of doing something enjoyable like reading, dancing etc., were indulging in sending notes in the shortest possible ways along with photos. He added sadly that there was a decrease in oral communication due to the increase in the use of the social networking sites. Raghav cited a recent research and said the frequent use of the social networking sites had rendered the youth more vulnerable to anti-social personality disorder and paranoia. On the other hand, Jurish Nath from the same school elaborated in detail the positive effects of the social media and how it was helping in making the people more social. He deliberated upon the social emergence of the networking sites as one of the most important tools for socialising that had been able to establish a healthy form of communication without draining bank accounts. Jurish also highlighted the fact that the networking sites played an important role in the Arab Spring movement, which led to a revolution in Egypt and other Middle East countries. Other advantages of the networking sites included fast and efficient communication, facilitation of identity, exploration and provision of social cognitive skills such as perspective talking, which involved voicing your own opinion, added Jurish. DGM, State Bank of India, Diwakar Bhatt was the chief guest on the occasion. He gave away the citation and the trophy to the winners. The judges for the event were eminent travel writers Ganesh Sali and Hugh and Colleen Gantzer. AGM, SBI, Pankaj Sharma, Branch Manager, SBI, Mussoorie, Satish Kumar and Sumit Goel were present. |
