Dehradun, September 11
Even after the death of legendary Habib Tanvir, nothing much has changed for Naya Theatre, except that his daughter Nageen Tanvir has now become the 'voice of the theatre' that has its roots in the rich folk tradition of villages.

Living life out of a suitcase, Nageen, a trained Hindustani classical singer, travels the length and breadth of the country, staging plays that manage to strike a chord with the audience.

Who can forget the Punjabi-speaking old woman of 'Jis Lahore Nahin Vekhya' fame, who prefers to stay back in Lahore after Partition, poignantly depicting the conflict that many families faced while making a choice between India and Pakistan, rather than India.

" The horror of Partition and the ensuing trauma that followed was vividly narrated by my parents. When we staged the play in Punjab in the 90s there were several families who empathised with the plight of the old woman," said Tanvir, while speaking with The Tribune.

Along with Spicmacay, her theatre group staged 'Gaon ka Naam Sasrual' and the famous play 'Jis Lahore Nahin Vekhya' at St Joseph's Academy. In fact Tanvir finds the growing religious intolerance in India worrisome.

While still alive, her father, the late Habib Tanvir, too, had several run-ins with the fundamental organisations. " Over the years religious fundamentalism is on the rise in the country.

People are less tolerant towards each other's point of view. When alive my father was a target of fundamental organisations and Naya Theater was blacklisted many times, but that did not deter him. He simply carried on," she said.

Her spirited assertion of the values that she imbibed from her parents finds expression both on onstage and offstage. " I made my stage debut at the age of three in the play 'Agra Bazaar' and played the role of a monkey. The lesson that I learnt from my father was giving your hundred per cent and getting into the skin of every character. I also learnt a great deal to the exposure that I got while still a child. It was the rural settings and the villages that my father took me to that helped me grasp the nuances of folk theater. I was exposed to all kinds of art and artistes. These days there is hardly any interaction of this kind. the children are too self-centred and not ready to leave their computer games," she asserted.

Petrol station owner robbed of Rs 3 lakh at doorstep of his home
Traders raise slogans against administration, observe bandh z Hunt on to nab culprit
Our Correspondent

Mussoorie, September 11
In an incident that has taken the peaceful town of Mussoorie by surprise, a petrol station owner was robbed by an unidentified assailant of around Rs 3 lakh while he was returning home after collecting the cash late last night.

According to the Mussoorie police, the incident occurred when the owner of the petrol station, Sanjay Goel, situated in the Kingcraig area, had collected cash of over Rs 3 lakh and put it in his hand bag. He then headed home.

As he parked his car in front of his house and was climbing down the staircase, an unidentified assailant, who was hiding in the dark, pushed Goel, snatched the hand bag and fled from the scene, giving no time to him to raise the alarm.

Sanjay Goel, recovering from the shock, rushed inside his house and explained the whole incident to his family members, who immediately summoned the police.

The police rushed to the spot and began combing operations to nab the culprit the whole night but returned empty-handed.

Shocked by the incident, the agitated members of the Mussoorie Traders' Association today gathered at the SDM's office and demanded immediate arrest of the assailant as the town was under the grip of fear.

The traders raised slogans against the administration and rued the fact that the SDM, Mussoorie, and the police station in-charge were not willing to listen to their woes even after such an incident. They presented a memorandum to the junior staff at the SDM office addressed to the Chief Minister, demanding arrest of the culprit and increase in the night patrolling by the police in the town.

Following that the traders also held an emergency meeting at a hotel here and decided to observe a bandh and shut down the shops of the town for whole day on September 12 as a mark of protest.

The president of the Mussoorie Traders' Association, Rajat Agarwal, speaking to the media said that the local administration had abandoned the town as no competent police officer or anyone from the administration was available in the town to check such incidents.

He also informed that considering inaction on the part of the police, which has not been able to nab the culprit even after 15 hours of the incident, the traders had decided to shut down their establishments as a mark of protest. He also said that the traders were living under the grip of fear in the town as the police had miserably in its duty. The past incidents of murder and other unsolved crimes had shaken their faith in the working of the police.

When contacted, Circle Officer MS Pharaswan said that they were searching for the culprit according to the details provided by the victim and had sealed all the boundaries around the town so that the culprit was not able escape. He assured the traders that the culprit would be caught soon.

Bhasin said while the elections were being held in strict accordance with the Lyngdoh recommendations, no candidate or its supporter would be allowed to resort to any sort of hooliganism during the polling tomorrow. Municipal College gears up for poll
Our Correspondent

Mussoorie, September 11
With only 12 hours remaining for the polling for the student body elections at Municipal College in Mussoorie, most of the candidates are still uncertain with their electoral prospects due to decrease in the number of voters here.

According to the Principal of the college Dr. RS Shukla, the number of voters has decreased drastically this year as most of the MA students have not received their mark sheets forcing the college administration to disallow them from voting.

He further said last year, the number of voters in the college was around 1,500 which had reduced to only 1,000 this year. The other reason for the less number of voters was an increase in the number of students who had failed this year and had applied for back papers in order to pass in the subjects.

The decrease in the number of the voters had forced the student organisations, the ABVP and the NSUI, to tie up with other lesser known groups. Many believe that this year the winning margin between the contenders would be narrow one and could lead to law and order problem during counting tomorrow.

However, police officials stated that they were ready to control any situation and had called two platoons of the PAC Constabulary.

The polling will begin around 9 am in the morning and finish around 2 pm. The results will be announced on the same day in the evening.
