Sports promotion top agenda: CM
Felicitates London Olympic achievers with cash rewards, cars
Naveen S Garewal and BS Malik

Gohana (Sonepat), August 26
Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda minced no words while saying “Padak lao, pad pao” . Haryana is the new nursery for sports, where every one from the village level will get access to a sports stadium and infrastructure to produce world-class sportsmen. He announced the government’s target of tripling the state’s medal tally in the 2016 Olympics from four to 12.

Rio Cash rewards doubled

The state players will get Rs 5 crore, Rs 3 crore and Rs 2 crore, for winning the gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

— Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Chief Minister

The state-level function to honour the four 2012 Olympic winners with a strong Haryana connection was held here today. Besides handing over cheques to each medal winner, the Chief Minister offered land for opening sports academies. Even native villages of the sportspersons have been bestowed with cash rewards.

Ironically, while the bonhomie over Haryanavis getting four out of the six medals won by India is justified, the state seems to have forgotten to check why Motilal Nehru Sports College, Rai, once known as the best sports training facility in the state, is losing out to other smaller academies and training centres. Hooda announced to recruit 790 coaches to provide coaching facilities up to the village level.

Overwhelmed by the applauding crowd and praise of his government by the London Olympic medal winners, the Chief Minister today announced to double the cash awards for the state players for winning medals in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. “The gold, silver and bronze medallists wil get Rs 5 crore, Rs 3 crore and Rs 2 crore respectively,” Hooda declared.

The Chief Minister has announced a cash award of Rs 1 crore for Gagan Narang's ancestral village Simla Gujran in Panipat district and Sushil Kumar's village Nilothi in Jhajjar district. Wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt's village Bhainswal Kalan in Sonepat district will be given Rs 2 crore. This money will be spent on developmental works. The move Hooda said would help encourage sports in villages.

In the Indian Olympic contingent, 19 were from Haryana. Further seven out of the 19 were from the Haryana Police. Speaking in chaste Haryanavi , Hooda who sported a pink turban, said If his government were in power then, he would “shower wealth on those who make the state proud.”

The players received cash rewards as well as Audi cars

Wrestler Sushil Kumar received a cash reward of Rs 1.5 crore for winning a silver medal while wrester Yogeshwar Dutt, badminton player Saina Nehwal and shooter Gagan Narang got Rs 1 crore each for their bronze medals. All four were also given away luxury Audi cars, LED TV sets and other consumer durables. The coaches of these players were also given cash rewards of Rs 1 lakh each. Fifteen other Olympic participants from Haryana, including Vijender Singh, Krishna Punia and others, were also given cash rewards and Maruti SX-4 cars.

Olympic finalist Krishna Punia’s achievement was acknowledged with a cheque for Rs 31 lakh; quarter finalist Vijender Singh and Amit Kumar and woman wrestler Geeta Phogat were given cash rewards of Rs 21 lakh each. The other 11 participants from the state who got Rs 11 lakh each were Annuraj Singh, Garima Chaudhary, Jai Bhagwan, Manoj Kumar, Om Prakash Singh, Sandeep Singh, Sanjeev Rajput, Sardara Singh, Seema Antil, Sumit Sangwan and Vikas Krishan. Further wrestler Amit Kumar will be inducted into Haryana Police as an inspector, Hooda announced.

He also asked the HAU Vice-Chancellor to name any suitable place or institution after Saina Nehwal.

Govt keeps secret details of CM, ministers’ foreign jaunts

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 26
Despite tall claims of transparency in governance, the Haryana Government believes in keeping the details of the foreign jaunts of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, his Cabinet colleagues and bureaucrats, undertaken at the cost of the state exchequer, a secret.

In fact, such is the level of secrecy that even public representatives, including MLAs, are not given a peep into the amount splurged on the foreign visits. A case in point is Ellenabad MLA Abhay Singh Chautala, who drew a blank on his question on foreign tours of the Chief Minister, ministers and bureaucrats on the first day of the Monsoon Session of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha.

To his question, Hooda replied that “efforts put into collection of this information will not be commensurate with the results”. Though it would not have been difficult for the state government to cull out the data on foreign visits.

Chautala also wanted to know the details of the total investment made in Haryana and the consequential benefits accruing to the state as the result of foreign tours.

Reacting to Hooda’s reply, Chautala told The Tribune, “Huge public money has been squandered away on foreign visits without any consequential benefits to the state. The Chief Minister should come clean on the wasteful expenditure from the state exechequer.”

London Olympics
‘Trip that never was’ to cost Haryana Rs 54 lakh
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 26
The cancelled trip of the 10-member team which was supposed to be led by Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda to cheer the sportspersons participating in the recent London Olympics, is set to cost about Rs 54 lakh to the Haryana government.

Recover money from CM, aides

Abhay Singh ChautalaChief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has no right to squander away a huge amount of Rs 54 lakh on the trip that never materialised.Since it is taxpayers’ hard-earned money, it should be recovered from the Chief Minister and his aides, who were originally part of the London-bound delegation.

— Abhay Singh Chautala, IOA vice-president

Reliable sources told The Tribune that the state government would be put to loss on account of non-refundable payments made for arranging board and lodging at London’s plush Hotel Crown Plaza, non-refundable payments for buying tickets for watching matches at the games and amount incurred on getting the air tickets cancelled at the eleventh hour.

While the amount on the making board and lodging arrangements is pegged at Rs 48 lakh, Rs 4.6 lakh was incurred on buying tickets for watching matches and the closing ceremony. The rest of the amount was spend on canceling the air tickets.

Meanwhile, Abhay Singh Chautala, vice-president of Indian Olympic Association(IOA), has come down heavily on the state government for wasting public money and demanded the registration of criminal cases against those responsible for it.

On August 2, the Union Sports and Youth Affairs Ministry has cancelled the trip of even a pruned 3-member delegation comprising Sports Minister Sukhbir Kataria, Chief Parliamentary Secretary (CPS) Prahlad Singh Gillankhera and Principal Secretary (Sports and Youth Affairs) Hardeep Kumar to London to cheer the players. Eighteen of the 81 sportspersons representing the country at the sports extravaganza were from Haryana.

The Ministry of External Affairs had reportedly given “political clearance” to the visit of the 10-member team to London which was later rejected by the Sports and Youth Affairs Ministry.

About 20 cows have died and 48 others were taken ill at a gaushala in Babanpur village, where villagers supplied the leftover food. Five villagers have been admitted to government hospitals in Fatehabad and Ratia while three others are getting treatment at a subsidiary health centre.

Ratia MLA Jarnail Singh and SDM Harish Bhatia also visited the village to take stock of the situation. Ajaib Singh, husband of the village sarpanch, said increased instances of diarrhoea were already being witnessed in the village due to supply of contaminated drinking water.

Dr Jain said the cause of such a high number of cases of diarrhoea today is due to food poisoning. He said chlorine tablets had been given to villagers.

Protest continues over denial of job quota at Central varsity
Sunit Dhawan / TNS

Mahendergarh, August 26
A dharna being staged by residents of Jant and Pali villages in the district for jobs and admissions quota as promised to them at the Central University of Haryana coming up on their land entered its 28th day today.

Protesters have alleged that instead of helping them to get their due, local administrative officials and other government functionaries were trying to camouflage the issue.

“In a bid to abdicate their own responsibility, the district administration and university authorities are accusing us of politicising the matter,” said Ranbir Singh, who heads the Aarakshan Bachao Sangharsh Samiti, Pali-Jant, under the aegis of which villagers are struggling. He said the villagers would not allow anybody to break their unity or sabotage their fight against injustice.

Kailash Pali, a prominent figure among the protesting villagers, pointed out that during recent meetings with the protesters, the local MLA and the DC had stated that they would request the CM to accede to the villagers’ demands. “We take strong exception to such statements…we are fighting for our rightful claim and not seeking any personal/special favour from the CM or any other state authorities,” he said.

The villagers said nearly 500 acres of panchayat land of their villages had been given for setting up the university on a 99-year lease at a token rate of Re 1 per acre per year. They alleged that the village panchayats passed resolutions to this effect under the government pressure and on assurance that the local residents would get preference in admissions and jobs at the university.

However, after the university was set up, they were denied any reservation/preferential treatment on the ground that the Central Universities Act did not have any provision for granting quota on the basis of domicile.
