Man, 3 sons thrashed by armed assailants
Shahkot, August 21 The accused reportedly threw piping hot oil on one of the victims. One of the youths, who got injured in the incident, was a representative of the BJP Youth Wing, Shahkot. Noticing the ghastly act, some nearby shopkeepers, including a local BJP leader Jagdish Wadhera, intervened in the matter, but the assailants also did not spare them. Though the accused managed to escape from the spot in their Bolero Jeep, in a hurry, they left behind their motorcycle. Furious at their act, residents set their bike on fire. The injured were identified as Pawan Wadhera, his three sons Sunny, Sanjeev and
Kapil. The incident occurred at about 4.30 pm when three bike-borne youths came at the restaurant and ordered juice. While consuming juice, one of the youths reportedly started arguing with the restaurant owner Pawan and when he protested this, the youths turned abusive. While leaving the restaurant, the youths threatened the restaurant owner with dire consequences and also warned them. Ricky Sobti, a victims’ cousin, said in half an hour, as many as seven armed youths arrived in a Bolero Jeep and started attacking the man and his sons present in the shop. The assailants also vandalised the whole restaurant. While beating up the victims, one of the accused took piping hot oil lying in the nearby sweet shop and threw the same on Sanjeev, who sustained serious burn injuries on his back. The victims alleged that they had informed the police when the accused threatened them with dire consequences. One of the victims said that had the police paid heed to the information, the incident could have been averted. Annoyed at the alleged police inaction, hundreds of city residents gave a city bandh call and blocked traffic on the National Highway 703 outside the Shahkot police station. The traffic on the highway almost came to a standstill for about two hours. It was only after police officials assured the protesters to nab the accused soon that the dharna was called off. The names of the two accused, who have been identified, were given to the police, Sobti, victim’s cousin said. No case had been registered yet. DSP Mukhwinder Singh said raids were being conducted to nab the accused. |
Hearing impaired child run over by train
Jalandhar, August 21 The child was running after a kite when the mishap took place. The victim was identified as Shubam, son a factory labourer. Sources said the child, along with other children, was playing near the railway tracks. Noticing a kite falling off near the railway tracks, the child, unaware of the train coming from the rear side, kept on running after the kite and was crushed to death by the Amritsar-bound Shan-e-Punjab Express. Police sources said the train driver had noticed the child running on the railway tracks and he repeatedly alarmed the child through horns, but in vain. Later, the child’s father told the police that Shubam was not able to hear the train’s hooter as he was hearing impaired. |
Three members of robbers’ gang held
Jalandhar, August 21 The accused were identified as Ricky, a resident of Mohalla 25 Cantonment, Munish Ram of Mohalla 31 Cantonment and Ashwani, alias Chandu, of the Lal Kurti area Cantonment. Sources said ASI Satnam Singh, along with a police party, had put up a naka near Sansarpur and on suspicion, signalled some motorcycle-borne youths for checking. On search, the police personnel recovered the said quantity of stuff from the accused. A case under Section 22-61-85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused. During investigation, the accused revealed that recently they had snatched gold earrings of a Deep Nagar-based woman. All accused had a criminal past, as police sources said four cases of loot were registered against Ricky in Phagwara. Similarly, four cases of loot were registered against Munish and several cases of theft, loot and scuffle were registered against Ashwani Kumar at various police stations of the city. |
Victim’s kin to intensify protest against police
Jalandhar, August 21 Ravinder Dhir, president, Vyopar Sena, said yesterday they had organised a meeting in which hundreds of area residents participated and they had wholeheartedly extended their support to them. Residents had alleged that the police had been delaying the arrest of the remaining accused just because he was a policeman. Yesterday, they had a talk with the police officer concerned, who promised them to nab the accused within four days, Dhir said if the accused ASI was not put behind bars in the stipulated time, they would lay siege to the Ghah Mandi chowk and would also gherao the police station. It may be recalled that on July 10, Mamta of Kot Basti Shiekh was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her residence. The police had also recovered a suicide note near the body in which she had held her daughter-in-law Monica and Monica’s parents (Ramesh Kumar and Ramesh Kumari) responsible for her death. A case under Section 306 of the IPC was registered against the trio. The police had already arrested Monica and her mother Ramesh Kumari, but Ramesh Kumar was evading arrest. Sahil, the victim’s son, alleged that the police seemed to be deliberately shielding the accused ASI by not arresting him. |
Government makes mockery of scheme
Jalandhar, August 21 To add to this, there are many more riders. An applicant has to be registered with the District Employment Generation and Training Bureau for at least three years and has to be aged between 16 and 50. Further, during the course of this registration, the applicant should not be involved in any self-employment and should not have remained a student of any government-recognised technical or professional institute. It is perhaps due to such unrealistic restrictions that of the more than 13,000 unemployed persons registered with the bureau here, only 18 have been availing the government allowance. Sumit Kumar, who is registered with the bureau for the past more than two years, says, “I am a class XII passout and without a job for a long time. There has been so far no advantage of the registration done from here so far.” Kanchan, another applicant, said that she had just cleared MA and B.Ed and had come here so that she gets intimation of any job as and when it comes. The free cooking training programme started recently for honing the skills of the applicants through two private academies has, of course, drawn a good response. The first batch of students has just passed out. Cabinet decision on enhancing allowance not implemented
Even as Punjab Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa, in his budgetary speech in the cabinet meeting on June 20, had announced that the unemployment allowance would be enhanced from Rs 150 to Rs 1,000, there has been no implementation on ground even still. Scores of unemployed persons are daily getting themselves registered, hoping to get some relief but to no avail. Jatinder Kumar Sareen, Deputy Director, Employment Generation and Training Bureau, Chandigarh, confirmed that till date there had been no orders on this front. Asked if the minimum family income to avail the scheme was also being enhanced, he said, “We cannot say anything till we get any orders.” |
Four power bill collection centres’ authority cancelled
Jalandhar, August 21 Following complaints by residents that the collection centre owners were levying Rs 10 or Rs 20 in addition to the bill amount, the PSPCL has cancelled their authority. There also had been complaints against some centres that these had been further sublet illegally. A few of such unauthorised centres have also been shut down, sources in the corporation said. The corporation in March this year had opened about 50 collection centres across the city for the convenience of the residents. Since these are basically department stores, grocers and electronic stores, these remain open even on holidays and are accessible the day through. A collection centre at the BMC chowk near the District Courts had been charging Rs 20 per bill. Manish, the owner, said he had been charging the amount to make for the SMS sent for every bill receiving and for giving a computerised printed copy of the same. “I think some advocate lodged a complaint against me owing to which the computer link is no longer working,” he clarified. Gopal Sharma, SE, PSPCL, said, “The collection centres were being paid Rs 6.50 for every bill received through them. There is no point why they should charge anything extra from the customers. The customers can bring in any such complaint to us against a collection centre and we will immediately cancel his authority. We have recently cancelled four such centres on the same account.” |
Server fails at transport office
Jalandhar, August 21 The applicants who started pouring in at 8 am had to wait for almost three hours till the computers started functioning. In the meantime, the queues outside room 120 for taking photographs of applicants and 11 number window meant for receiving cash kept on growing. It was after some private engineers were called that the system was set right and it started functioning. The District Transport Officer, RL Jassal, said it was a technical snag, which was later rectified. |
Roadways planning to discontinue bus service to Delhi airport, alleges Cong
Jalandhar, August 21 Alleging this, Punjab Congress secretary Virendra Sharma and district Congress president Arun Walia said, “The Punjab Roadway is planning to do so for providing benefit to the private bus operators, belonging to the ruling alliance, including Badals. Sharma and Walia said, “The Punjab Roadways had started service of its two Volvo buses from Jalandhar bus stand to the Delhi airport a few years ago when BJP leader Master Mohan Lal was the Transport Minister. The bus service is providing a lot of benefit to the residents of Jalandhar and surrounding areas as a considerable number of them are settled abroad and they use this bus service to reach the Delhi airport for boarding various flights.” The Congress leaders said, “The Punjab Roadways had temporarily cancelled the bus service from Jalandhar to the Delhi airport a few weeks ago, but the same was restored after protests. Now it is planning to cancel it permanently on one or the other pretext by making a false report of raising a question on its viability.” Sharma and Walia said they would submit a memorandum to the General Manager of Jalandhar Depot of the Punjab Roadways against any move to cancel bus service to the Delhi airport. “Even after that if they go ahead with the plan of canceling the bus service, they would hold a demonstration outside the Punjab Roadways General Manager office,” they added. The Congress leaders said, “If the bus service to the Delhi airport is cancelled, the state exchequer will be adversely affected. Further the passengers will also suffer as they will be left with no option, but to either board privates buses for reaching the Delhi airport or hire taxis to reach there.” |
Seminar on microwave energy held
Jalandhar, August 21 Dr Rajneesh Arora, Vice Chancellor, PTU, said microwave processing could be helpful for the state because it is clean, safe, and efficient, creating remarkable savings in both time and energy. This is very relevant in the agriculture processing field. Keynote speaker of the workshop Prof Dinesh Agrawal, professor, Penn State University, US, spoke on the fabrication of microwaves, their usefulness in industries and in the demonstration on latest developments in applied technologies. Dr AP Singh, Dean, PTU, said microwave technologies were suitable to perform chemical reactions and therefore, processing time could be dramatically shortened due to the ready access to elevated temperatures in sealed vessels. |
City boy is state B’minton Champion
Jalandhar, August 21 Abhinav Manota became the Punjab champion in the singles event in his maiden attempt and defeated rival Love Kumar from the local Ratti Badminton Academy by 20-22, 22-20 and 21-14 in the final event. The final list of players for the upcoming event was released by the association recently. “Now all eyes are on the upcoming event, which will see a sea of talent from across the northern states, hence a tough competition ahead. Earlier, I emerged as a runners-up in the state-level Late Chaman Lal Ratti Memorial Badminton Tournament in the single’s category,” Abhinav said. Abhinav, who is ranked eighth at all-India level in the mixed doubles event with Rachita Sehdev from Delhi, said he was committed to pursue his dream of making it to the nationals, hence he shifted his college this year. At present he is studying at Khalsa College, Chandigarh, and undergoing training from NIS coach Surinder Mahajan. “Earlier, I was studying at the local DAV College, but I shifted base to Chandigarh for better exposure in the game. As Khalsa College has a state-of-the-art badminton academy, the players get a chance to pick the game with excellent coaching camps and practice sessions,” he added. Aiming high for the national spot, Abhinav, who picked the game from his father Loveleen Kumar, also a veteran badminton player, said, “It has been seven years since I started learning this game at the local Hans Raj stadium. Today, badminton is a craze among the youth owing to big names like Saina Nehwal and Peter Gade from Denmark and I am hopeful of making it to the national level soon,” he said. Recently, he attended a badminton coaching camp at Shilaru, near Shimla, which was organised by the academy of the Khalsa College. “Around 20 players from the college had participated in camp, which was an amazing learning experience for me,” he maintained. |
