Delay in construction of railway overbridge at Sodal crossing

Jalandhar, August 19
Fed up with the alleged dilly-dallying tactics of the municipal corporation Jalandhar (MCJ) for constructing the much-required railway under bridge (RUB) at the Sodal crossing, Jalandharities have threatened to lodge their protest during the proposed foundation stone-laying ceremony of an aquarium by the MCJ on August 24.

Despite the issuance of notification by the Punjab Local Bodies Department in August last year for acquiring land around the Sodal railway crossing for the RUB, nothing concrete has been done in this regard so far, whereas at least one-fourth of the city population is suffering a lot in the absence of any RUB.

A representative of the Chamber of Jalandhar Welfare Societies, comprising over 25 residents welfare associations, Raj Kumar Sharma, expressed surprise that the Local Bodies Department was going to lay the foundation stone of the aquarium, whereas its announcement had been made a few weeks ago. On the contrary, it forgot to do the same for the RUB, whereas the notification was the same had been issued about a year ago.

Sharma said, “We want RUB first, aquarium and sports hub later. Despite assurance by Mayor for the construction of the RUB, nothing concrete had been done so far. Now his tenure is going to end by September 9, he is planning to lay the foundation stone of other projects like aquarium and sports hub, but has forgotten this much-required RUB.”

The chamber representative said the BJP had made tall promises of constructing the RUB here while seeking votes during the Assembly elections in 2007, 2012 and parliamentary elections in 2009.

Though Punjab Local Bodies department had been issued the notification in August last year for acquiring 11-kanal 19-marla land around the Sodal railway crossing for the RUB, nothing had been done so far, he added. The notification was issued under Section 171 of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976 read with Section 50 of the Land Acquisition Act 1894.

Nearly one-fourth population of the city is suffering in the absence of any RUB here, as it gets stranded at the Sodal railway crossing and nearby Gajji-Gullah, Ram Nagar, Devi Talab and Kishanpura railway crossings.

Interestingly, over 150 trains pass through Jalandhar-Ferozepur and Jalandhar-Amritsar tracks located on these crossings daily. Thousands of residents of these localities had to suffer a lot to cross these crossings, as on an average, a train passes through these railway crossings every 10 minutes and the crossings remain closed for normal traffic most of the time. Residents living in the localities situated on the other side of the city also face similar problem when they had to go towards the above-mentioned localities for various works, he added.

Sometimes, these crossings remained closed for even 45 minutes, especially during peak hours, when three and even four trains passed. At that time, several pedestrians and two wheeler-borne persons were left with no option but to pass the closed railway crossings to reach to their destination on time, he said, adding that several persons, including two students and a lady teacher, were killed as they were crushed under trains while passing the closed crossing.

That is why, thousands of persons residing in localities situated across these railway crossings, falling under the Jalandhar North Assembly constituency, have been demanding building of either ROB or RUB for decades. The severity of the problem may be gauged from the fact that the welfare societies of Shiv Nagar, Mathura Nagar, Ashok Vihar, Kot Baba Deep Singh Nagar, Preet Nagar, Dada Colony, Aman Nagar, Kamal Park, Kailash Nagar, Sanjay Gandhi Nagar, Sodal Nagar, Royal Club Ram Nagar, Globe Colony and Gobind Nagar had also put up a hoarding beside the Ram Nagar crossing right before the last parliamentary elections held in 2009 to put pressure on politicians for the construction of ROB or RUB.

  • Over 150 trains pass through Jalandhar-Ferozepur and Jalandhar-Amritsar tracks located on these crossings daily
  • The crossings remain closed for even 45 minutes during peak hours when three or even four trains pass

Woman held for solemnising second marriage
Our Correspondent

Jalandhar, August 19
The sadar police nabbed a woman for allegedly solemnising second marriage without giving divorce to her first husband. The police also nailed her three accomplices who helped her commit the crime.

Bhupinder Singh, a resident of Ghai Nagar, had filed a complaint with the police that after the death of his wife, on the reference of his friend Amrik Singh, he recently married an Amritsar-based woman Ratanjit Kaur. But he (my friend) had not disclosed the fact that the woman was already married and had not divorced her first husband.

A few days after the marriage, valuables from his house started going missing and whenever he questioned his wife about the missing valuables, she used to misbehave with him, the complainant alleged to the police. Later after inquiries, he came to know that his wife had been taking away valuables at her sister’s home, located in the Urban Estate Phase II locality.

Acting on the complaint, the police nabbed the woman and three other accused, identified as Navinder Kaur, Sukhdev Singh and Amrik Singh. A case under Sections 420, 494 of the IPC had been registered.

Torture by in-laws alleged

A Batala-based woman today levelled allegation of torture against her in-laws, just because she could not bear a child after marriage. She had filed a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner of Police.

Interestingly, her husband is also supporting her and holds his parents responsible for harassing his wife.

Mala, a resident of Batala, told mediapersons that she got married to Parveen of the Santokhpura locality in 2009 and even after three years of marriage, she could not bear a child. “Considering me unfortunate for her son, my mother-in-law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law have been pressurising me to give divorce to Parveen. Many a time, I was maltreated and thrashed by my in-laws,” Mala said.

Mala’s husband Parveen alleged that his parents had been unnecessarily forcing her wife for divorce and even threatening to debar them from their moveable and immovable property.

A passion for some and hobby for others or both, photography is perhaps one of the best and the most sought-after leisure pursuit for many. Those who have a penchant for photography feel that it is a medium of not just sharing what you feel, but also an attempt to take the onlookers into a completely magical and unknown world.

On World Photography Day today, Jalandhar Tribune spoke to some city residents, who took up photography as a hobby and gradually fell in love with it. And despite their busy life, they have continued with their hobby.

Amardeep Singh Samra, CEO of city based Midland Group, whose black and white picture of an ancient tomb in Nakodar, near Jalandhar, was displayed at Times Square, New York, said, “I love capturing different moods of a situation through photography. Whether it is nature, landscapes, portraits or human existence in any condition, it just clicks with me. Moreover, wherever I am, either in India or abroad, my camera is my foremost companion.”

Sharing his experience, Amardeep said he picked up the hobby at the age of 13 when he was a student at Apeejay School. “Later, I also got constructed a darkroom at my house to continue my passion of photography. Earlier, I had also joined a group of like-minded photographers - Friends of Photography - in Chandigarh, but it has almost ceased to exist,” he added.

Amardeep has also been regular in sending his pictures to the National Geographic Channel, besides printing a table calendar on folk dances of Punjab. “I have also been regularly visiting mini Olympics at Kila Raipur and experimenting with slow shutter speeds to capture moods,” he said.

Another avid photographer Gurdeep Singh, president of the GNA-IMT group, has also been pursuing his passion of photography for the past two decades. Fond of nature, flowers, birds and landscape pictures, he has printed diaries with some of his rare collection of camera work. “Recently, he got printed a diary on the national bird of India - peacock - and spent around three years exploring the rural hinterlands near Jalandhar to capture the beauty of the bird. It was an amazing experience, clicking, learning and exploring the splendour of peacock,” he added.

Gurdeep is also fond of clicking pictures of birds, hence has been visiting bird sanctuaries, like Harike Pattan, to fulfil his passion. Talking about photography, he said, “Photography is an amazing work of art, where you get a chance to understand as well as learn the existence of nature.”

Terming photography synonymous to relaxation, Kapurthala-based advocate Kanwaljit Singh Ahluwalia maintained that he took up photography as a hobby when cameras was a big luxury. “To begin with, I had bought a camera from abroad and started taking baby steps in this field. Today, although there is a no dearth of digital cameras, but somehow the essence of photography as a hobby has vanished,” he added.

Talking about his memorable experience of photography, Ahluwalia said some years ago he had gone to Leh, where the avenues of clicking landscapes was enormous and he was got lost in the beauty of the place. “It is one of the most beautiful memories, as we saw nature changing hues with every single second. Especially the pictures of Tso Moriri, Pangong Tso and Nubra Valley had just made photography an amazing experience for me,” he said.

However, he lamented the lack of effort for photo exhibitions and workshops for such like-minded people. “Earlier, I used to be a regular member of the Ludhiana Club 35, but now there is no such group. Even in the city, we have Virsa Vihar, where such exhibitions can be held, but no efforts are made,” he said.
