Little work, more deadlines
Completion of Sidhwan Canal expressway pushed to March next year

The wait for the completion of the Sidhwan Canal expressway project seems to be unending. The project has now got a new completion deadline --- March next year. The earlier deadline was October. But the “completion” deadline does not include the construction of two rail overbridges (ROBs) and the main Gurthali Bridge near Doraha.

Encroachment on prime land worth Rs 50 crore cleared
Ludhiana, August 21
The Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) has cleared prime land measuring over 43 kanals in its 475 acre scheme at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar after a litigation that lasted for over three decades.

Sewage being dumped into canal
Ludhiana, August 21
The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (MC) is closing all sewerage water disposals into the Budha Nullah, but at the same time, it is polluting the Sidhwan Canal by dumping sewage into it. The main sewerage line running parallel to the Ferozepur Road got damaged on Friday when digging was on for the Sidhwan Canal expressway project.

The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has been dumping sewage into the Sidhwan Canal after a sewer was damaged during digging work on the expressway; and repair work being undertaken to fix the pipe.

Thieves strike at IAS officer's house
Ludhiana, August 21
Thieves struck at the house of an IAS officer at BRS Nagar and decamped with two television sets and four cooking cylinders. They also took a mattress and some crockery lying in the house.

Double whammy for family
Jagraon, August 21
Two cousins committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance at Bardeke village near here today morning. The deceased youth has been identified as Balwinder Singh, son of Jarnail Singh, while the girl was identified as Amandeep Kaur, daughter of Shinder Singh. Both Jarnail Singh and Shinder Singh are siblings.

Two more snatchers arrested

The Daresi police has claimed to have busted a gang of snatchers with the arrest of two persons. The gang was reportedly behind eight incidents of snatching in the recent past.

Filling station owner, wife nabbed for peddling drugs
Ludhiana, August 21
A 60-year-old petrol station owner and his wife were caught by the police for allegedly peddling drugs near Sahnewal last evening. The accused identified as Bhajan Ram and Goddo Rani were nabbed during a police naka at Nandpur village near Sahnewal.

Bank employees to go on strike from today
Ludhiana, August 21
In response to the call given by the United Forum of Bank Unions for a nationwide strike, the Punjab Bank Employees Federation (affiliated to the All-India Bank Employees Association) will observe a two-day strike on August 22 and 23.

Frustrated over scanty rainfall and unscheduled power cuts, a farmer of Bujgar village near Jagraon destroyed his paddy crop planted in two acres of land with a tractor.

Ayushi Gupta, an artist, has started its art and craft work exhibition at an art gallery on Monday. She displayed her paintings and trousseau in the exhibition. She also exhibited the work which she had done in her school days.

Residents inconvenienced at Suvidha Centre
Ludhiana, August 21
Applicants line-up outside the new licensing window opened at the Hall No. 3 of Suvidha Centre in Ludhiana on Tuesday. Over 400 people suffered due to non-availability of a Duty Magistrate at the Suvidha Centre today. After a long weekend of three days, people from the neighbouring towns and villages arrived at the centre early in the morning. The people, however, were disappointed due to the lethargic attitude of the officials that delayed their work.

Metro project for city on track

In a good news for city residents, the much-awaited meeting of the Ludhiana Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is scheduled for tomorrow in Delhi. The LMRC has been waiting for the meeting for long as the final process of the Ludhiana Metro Rail project will fall on track.

'Ambulance 108' staff rescue another drowning girl
Ludhiana, August 21
Once again the staff of "Ambulance 108" came to the rescue of a drowning girl today. Jagdip Singh, cluster head of Ludhiana-11 for "Ambulance 108" service, said, "When driver of the ambulance Manpreet and emergency medical technician Rohit Kumar were passing by the Sidhwan Canal, a few residents approached them asking them to save the drowning girl."

Six challaned for smoking at public places, officials collect Rs 800 as fine
Ludhiana, August 21
The Anti-Tobacco Task Force today challaned six persons for smoking at public places. The team, including district epidemiologist Dr Puneet Juneja, food safety officer Ravinder Garg, Drug Inspector Ekaantpriya Singla, mass media officer of the health department Harjinder Singh, Amandeep Singh from the District Attorney's office and a representative of an NGO, visited the Mini Secretariat and city bus stand and challaned six violators.

Rail India comes up with mobility plan to end traffic woes

Traffic jams are a routine occurrence in Ludhiana. It is said that a person who is able to drive a vehicle in Ludhiana can drive it anywhere in the country. There seems to be some respite to the maddening traffic of the city as Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) Ltd has conducted a comprehensive mobility plan for the city.

Theft at house in Dugri
Ludhiana, August 21
Thieves struck at a house of a businessman at Dugri and decamped with cash and gold ornaments worth lakhs. The incident came to light here this evening when Gurmeet Singh, who along with his family members, had gone to visit his relatives, returned home.

50 gm smack recovered, two arrested
Samrala, August 21
The Samrala police has claimed to have arrested two youths and recovered 50 gm smack from their possession near Sangatpura village. As per information, a police party was on routine checking, when they saw two youths and asked them to stop near a T- point in Sangatpura village.

2 commit suicide
Ludhiana, August 21
Financial crunch drove two persons to commit suicide. In the first incident, a 40-year-old-man identified as Suresh Narang, a resident of Model Town Extension, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in his factory unit located in Shilapuri.
