Commuters blatantly flout norms on Taranwala pul

Tribune News Service

Amritsar, August 20
At a time when the multi-lane overbridge on the Taranwala pul has solved the traffic chaos to an extent, commuters are taking rules for a ride putting their lives at risk.
Commuters using the elevated road, which connects with the Amritsar-Jalandhar GT Road, flout norms at will in the absence of any check. The Tribune team today took a round of the key-points of the bridge and found blatant traffic violations.

With no traffic police present at those places, the commuters openly flouted norms while driving on the Taranwala over-bridge.

Moreover, loaded trucks and ten-wheel tourist buses take the route to cross the Bhandari bridge that is banned for entry of heavy vehicles.

“People do stop their vehicles in the midway to have a chat with their known ones while youngsters practise stunts on the road,” said Naresh Kumar, a resident.

Another resident Gurpartap Singh said though the multi-lane bridges had curtailed the travelling time, it would be better if the police carry out regular patrolling to check violations on the bridge.

He said, “If truck operators fix wooden planks on the cargo to double the capacity of passengers, then bus operators carry passengers on roofs to maximise their profits”.

Officials blamed scant staff and resources as a main hindrance in streamlining the traffic scenario. Sources said there were 165 policemen, including two inspectors, 25 sub-inspectors and assistant sub-inspectors, 115 head constables and constables and 22 Punjab Home Guards (PHG) jawans, who are engaged for the traffic system of the holy city.

ACP Karanbir Singh said, “We are short of strength, but all these locations need a constant vigil.”

Around 9,000 vehicles enter the city daily from the neighbouring states and the additional traffic flow is of the pilgrims who visit Golden Temple daily. Despite having limited staff and resources, we do our best to manage it all, he said.

BPL families to get health cards
Tribune News Service

Amritsar, August 20
The district health department will resume the work of making cards of the Below Poverty Line (BPL) families under the Rashtriya Swastha Bima Yojna (RSBY) from tomorrow onwards.

Earlier, the department had identified around 32,000 BPL families in the district. Falling short of the target to cover each BPL family, the department has so far covered only 62 per cent of the total families.

The RSBY scheme was introduced in year 2009. Under this scheme, the BPL family members are eligible for medical insurance of Rs 30,000 by paying a premium of Rs 30. The treatment is provided at all the government hospitals and the affiliated private hospitals.

In the year 2011-12, the government hospitals of the district had helped beneficiaries to get free medical services costing Rs 24 lakhs, said senior medical officer Dr Balbir Singh Dhillon.

He said the department is initiating another drive of enrolment wherein eligible families can get the cards issued from Verka.

"Lack of awareness among the poor people is the reason why they fail to avail benefits of the government’s schemes. All the common and major diseases are covered in it. The eligible families must get their cards in order to avail the benefits,” he said.

The camp would be inaugurated by Chief Parliamentary Secretary Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu.

Indian Idol: Families pray for their singing stars

Amritsar, August 20
If one is a trained classical singer learning since he was eight years old, the other is a singer by leisure until it changed his life. But that is the only difference between Vipul Mehta and Amit Kumar. Both the singers, being contestants of Indian Idol-6 have secured their place as top-three contenders of the competition.

The good news is, Amritsar might stake claim for the first time in giving India its sixth Indian Idol.

As things get hot and happening on the reality show, the family and friends of the two are leaving no stone unturned to garner support and ensure their win.

“The house has become a base camp for all the fans and friends of Vipul who are supporting him. Every day we have loads of people coming and telling us that they are voting for him. It is overwhelming to have wishes from so many people,” shares Mayank Kapoor, Vipul’s brother-in-law.

As Vipul attempts to impress the audience and judges with his singing, his family is busy pleasing the almighty. “We are planning to organize a puja for his good luck. Though, nothing has been finalized yet, we are expecting a visit from him before the finale along with the Indian Idol team. We want Vipul to be there for the puja,” informs Mayank.

As for Vipul’s father, Mukesh Mehta, his son is already an idol. “Whenever he performs on stage, I know he is giving his best. He was a finalist on Amul Voice of India four years back, but couldn’t make it. This time I am sure that he will win”.

Similar atmosphere is prevailing at the residence of Amit Kumar, the dark horse on the show. Being an untrained singer, Amit has taken the competition head on and exceeded.

Taking inspiration from his idol, Mohd Rafi, Amit has come a long way from helping his father in his salon to sharing stage with the stars. “Music was his passion. He always wanted to become singer, though we couldn’t train him. But we never stopped him from following his heart. I am proud that Amit has come this far and is so close to pursue his goal,” share his father Somraj.

The locality is praying religiously for Amit’s success, especially his mother who has been praying in a small temple inside the home. They are now waiting for Amit’s visit before the finale and give him a warm welcome. “He has become a hero, an idol for many here,” said Somraj.

Makeup as a protective shield
Neha Saini
Tribune News Service

Amritsar, August 20
The changing season can be harsh on the skin. It’s not easy to maintain the natural skin tone and glow of skin. And that is where the most dependable shield comes to your rescue-Makeup.

Seemingly, makeup is an engrossing process that allows you to hide some flaws and look your best. In fact, it is a shield which helps you to protect your skin from the harmful effects of changing seasons. The unforgiving temperature and humidity changes can be avoided by using the right products, the right way.

“No one has to pancake themselves with makeup, but a little makeup during summers helps escape some of the routine skin problems like blemishes, tanning and break outs,” says Ritu Koletine, hair and skin expert and director, Cleopatra. “The best tip for the season is to keep it minimal with maximum effect. Usually, the monsoons and the summers require natural look,” she adds.

“Base and concealing are two important steps. If you get them right, there is nothing to worry . Keep the base liquid with a good sunscreen for a natural and non-greasy look. Use concealer for extra protection from the UV rays,” says Kolentine.

And the good part is that not just girls, but guys too can use makeup as a tool to avoid skin problems. “Makeup is not necessarily all girlie stuff. Men too wear it to get a flawless skin,” shares Javed Khan, a stylist from the city and owner of Makeover. Men can use makeup in small quantities on areas like under the eyes, on the sides of nose and corners of lips.

“These are the areas that get dry during harsh seasons. Use powered base, a lip balm and some sunscreens to avoid pigmentation, chapped lips and blemishes,” advises Javed

Amritsar, August 20
Baba Kulwant Singh from Ajnala with the support of the tourism department, SGPC and hundreds of devotees is leading a silent but subtle revolution of cleaning roads on way to Panj Sarovar (five holy ponds) Walk.

Hoping that one day it will develop into a movement and a habit, Baba Kulwant Singh and his volunteers not only clean the filth and litter from the streets, but educate residents to properly dump refuse and participate in the campaign.

Garbage lying on routes of Heritage and Panj Sarovar walks has brought out the inefficiency and inability of the Municipal Corporation to clean these roads.

Baba Ji Ajnale wale, as he is fondly called, along with his volunteers, numbering sometime about 200, armed with brooms, big iron bowls, cycle rickshaws, spades and other instruments has been removing filth, garbage and refuse from the streets and small open drains en-route Panj Sarovar walk once a week since October last.

At 11 in the night on every Saturday, volunteers come specifically from Ajnala to clean the roads connecting, leading and passing through five holy ponds Santokhsar, Bibeksar, Ramsar, Kaulsar and most sacred Amrit Sarovar, in the Golden Temple complex.

Upon their arrival, volunteers of the Sewak Ishnana Jatha, Gurdwara Santokhsar Sahib offer them langar (community kitchen) before they initiate arduous task of cleaning the labyrinth roads inside the walled city. It took nearly five long hours to clear the stretch of over two km.

Baba Kulwant Singh appreciated the cooperation of residents and shopkeepers on the route. He added that after cleaning the roads for sometime he met them and apprised them of various solutions to the problems which are hampering the cleaning drive. He remarked that the impact was astonishing and people respect them for taking up the job without any monetary consideration.

He informed that the cleanliness drive would be taken up on the night of Wednesday also from October. Besides, he said route of heritage walk, which included heritage buildings, Gurdwaras and temples, would subsequently be taken up for cleaning up. He thanked the SGPC for providing them equipments for cleaning and a room at Bhai Gurdas Hall.

District Tourism Officer Balraj Singh said Principal Secretary Tourism Geetika Kalha appreciated the efforts of the Baba Ji and assured him support in shape of giving truck, trolleys, tipper, bicycle drawn rickshaw and other equipments for cleaning.

He informed that the department would install dustbins and garbage dumpers with the assistance of corporation en-route the walks. He said an engineer was engaged in collecting data to ascertain the number of required dustbins.

MC Commissioner Dharampal Gupta said cleaning roads was a sewa and anyone could do it. But he said the MC had been doing its cleaning job regularly.
