Don't worry, be happy
Whether you call it yet-another-marketing strategy or thank the restaurant and club-owners for their miniscule generosity, Happy Hours has been given a fat share on the menu and everyone is lapping it up with joy. Hushed whispers about the weird timings (would you leave your work to dig into a burger that costs Rs 20 at eleven in the morning!) do float around, but who minds that dip in the pricing during happy hours. We check out a few places that guarantee to make you happy; take your pick!
The origin The term 'happy hours' seems to have originated in the 18th century when the Volstead Act banned alcohol consumption; citizens would host 'cocktail hours', also known as 'happy hours', at a speakeasy (an illegal drinking establishment) before eating at restaurants where alcohol would not be served. In the present day 'everything sells scenario' happy hours is just a marketing term for a period of time when a restaurant or a bar offers discounts on beer, cocktails and other domestic drinks. Ginny Chawla of the Altius looks at it as a mind-game. "I would rather go with happy pricing than happy hours." If you logically think about the gain in the happy hours, Ginny adds, "You wouldn't be too happy!" China town Yo China, Sector-9, Chandigarh, offers one plus one draught beer from 12-6.30 pm. In the Happy Hours from 4- 6.30 pm, the one plus one offer stands on selected snack. One plus one mocktail from 4-6.30 is also included in the Happy Hours time. Preeti Keith, executive director, sees youngsters and corporates walking in during the happy hours. "People do look out for happy hours and want to get the best possible deal at that time." On display Buffet Hut makes you happy from 4-7 pm everyday and you can enjoy the buffet for Rs 249 (taxes included). Golden Tuesday (part of Happy Hours) opens the buffet for only elderly people at Rs 199 for lunch. On Chit Chat Thursday's kitty party, women can enjoy the lunch buffet at Rs 199. Lounge at ease Himani's Vertigo Lounge, Sector-35, Chandigarh, offers a pitcher of beer with a mug free on Friday and Saturday from 7-11 pm. Ankit Gupta, director, says, "We give Happy Hours during peak time and not during the lean hours. What is the fun of giving Happy Hours when there are less walk-ins and no customer to order." Happy pedaling At Peddlers-35, Chandigarh, customers have the right to be happy throughout! Buy one drink (shots, beer, champagne; everything with 30 ml base) in the Happy Hours and get one free. Also, get better pricing on bucket of beer bottles and Bacardi bottles during these hours. "The idea is to sell by hook or crook," laughs Vipul Dua, managing director, Peddlers. "The idea is to sell all the brands here, so whether it is done through Happy Hours or other schemes available, it does not matter." Fresh delight All pizza-lovers can be happy with Dominos offering two regular pizzas for Rs 150 during Happy Hours from 3-6 pm. From the two pizzas, you can choose one from the simply non vegetarian category and other from vegetarian category (Double cheese, Fresh veggie, Country special and Farmhouse). From the oven On weekdays from 3-7 pm spend Rs 500 and above, and get to order any of your favourite pastry. Oven Fresh-26, Chandigarh, offers one plus one beer throughout the week at any time of the day. In the Happy Hours, you get a coke free on ordering burger or pasta. Hop on From 12.00-7.30 pm, Monday to Friday, enjoy one plus one beer and any other domestic alcohol at Hops 'n' Grains in Panchkula. jasmine@tribunemail.com
Business byte Generally, Happy Hours are during the late afternoon, usually between 4-8 pm, from Monday to Thursday. Many bars also have late night Happy Hours for afternoon shift workers from 10 pm-1 am. This promotion is intended to boost business on what may otherwise be a slow day. In most cases the Happy Hour lasts longer than a single hour. The term is also commonly used to describe the gathering of work colleagues at a restaurant or bar after work hours, possibly outside the usual period or vice versa.

On the trail
The hugely successful show Crime Patrol's this weekend episode fetches a story from Chandigarh. The journey of an abandoned child with a smiling face aptly named Khushi and her trials and tribulations, make for this moving story.
Subramanian S. Iyer, the creator and director of the show, shares what made him pick up this particular story. "We came across this case in a court verdict. And, then began the journey to put the story together," says Subramanian. The journey of a small child from one shelter home to another and how she fell prey to some workers there is what Crime Patrol catches. Telling a story, and telling it well, is what Subramanian likes. Associated with the show from the very beginning (they aired the first season in 2003 and the fourth season is already on), this director got away from the show for a while, but is back, "It's very challenging to track these stories and even more is the treatment." But the reward lies in viewers' feedback that's phenomenal, feels the director who is all for socially relevant shows. The genre has recently opened up and he is happy about it. "I don't see it as a competition. It's rather a welcome change from the regular, daily soaps." mona@tribunemail.com

Nikhil Advani’s Delhi Safari is a gift to his daughter
Nikhil Advani puts Patiala House failure past behind him and gears up for his next project Delhi Safari and says that the 3D animation movie is for his six-year-old daughter, Keya.
"I feel I have made this film for my daughter who could see it with her friends. It would be really expensive if I make a film especially for my daughter, but the motive behind this was that it's a very proud moment when she enjoys such films with her friends discussing about characters and all," Advani said in an interview and added that apart from children, animation genre has adult patrons too. "I don't believe animated films are only for children. I made this film for a lot of people who enjoy such films," he said. After debuting as a director with 2003 hit Kal Ho Naa Ho, he wielded megaphone for Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute To Love, Chandni Chowk To China and Patiala House, but none could replicate the success of his first directorial venture. With Delhi Safari, Advani has tried his hands for the first time with animation and says it's a time consuming and expensive too. "Couple of months post Salaam-e-Ishq (2007), I started working on this project. It took five long years to complete the project. The film is originally in Hindi and also dubbed in English. It's a very time consuming process," the 41-year-old said. He further added: "To make an animated film, it takes a lot of time and there needs to be some discipline. All your work is done on paper. In Hollywood, they spend around two years in pre-production. It's a little risky and expensive to make animated films." Delhi Safari will be competing with Karan Johar's Student of The Year which is scheduled for October 19 release. —IANS

Actor Shia Labeouf has announced plans to quit making blockbusters after confessing he felt restrained on the sets of hit series Transformers.
The 26-year-old said he wants to dedicate the rest of his life to making quality independent films with "visionaries" like Lars von Trier and Terrence Malick, reported a publication. cash restraints. "These dudes are a miracle. They give you the money, and they trust you... They don't give you the money, then get on a plane and come to the set and chase you around for five months," he added. —PTI

Ethnic flavour
Sukhmani Indian ethnic interiors create an essence of energy in a room. It is very colourful and unique. India is home to many cultures like Rajasthani, Punjabi, Bengali and Gujrati, to name a few. If you are looking to decorate your room according to the Indian ethnic style, you must first choose a particular culture that you wish to display. Here are a few tips you must keep in mind before you start – * Intricately carved furniture is used to create an ethnic look. Dark woods like mahogany and teak wood is mostly preferred. You can also use wrought iron furniture instead. Low level seating or ground seating is characteristic of Indian decor. * Indian decor is very colourful. Reds, hot pink, oranges and greens are lavishly used in typical Indian decor highlighted and accessorized with a lot of gold, bronze and silver. * The use of terracotta tiles and stone flooring provides richness to the ethnic decor style. Carpets with Indian motifs or colourful rugs and darris can also be used. * Vibrant, bold and embroidered ethnic fabrics are mostly used for curtains, cushions and bed sheets. Cotton, silk and satin are the most used fabrics in an Indian décor. Make use of your old silk sarees to make beautiful cushions. * Use embroidered and bead curtains to add that Indian charm to your room. Use a lot of mirror work on the cushions, mats and wall hangings. * For wall art, use ancient paintings on Indian themes like a village scene, paintings depicting scenes from the Ramayana or Mahabharata, Images of gods, maybe a traditional Indian dance form like a kathak dance etc. To enhance the Indian decor theme * You can use miniature Indian musical instruments to accessorize your room. * Replace candles and candle stands with the traditional diyas, kerosene lamps and handis. * Replace your china with the copper base utensils, brass and earthen pots. * A lot of wooden jaalis are used in Indian decor. You can replace your main door with an antique wooden door and add a wooden jhoola in the house. You can also use Indian pottery to decorate your home. * Use light fixtures that have the typical ethnic design. Lighting shops provide a lot of variety for the Indian look. Avoid white lights at every cost. Instead use dim yellow lights to add a mystical charm to your room. * If you have small collectibles, arrange them on a table. An inexpensive way to add depth to your Indian corner is to display a collection of brass vessels or urns. * Rangolis are an integral part of an Indian home so make one at the entrance. Red letter day!
Divya Dutta The trophy at PIFFA of the most charming smile award given by Dharmendra was an elating feeling. But the butterflies in my stomach were still there! I was to perform for the Punjabi adaptation of Tumhari Amrita with none other than Om Puri. He was making his comeback to theatre after 25 years. It was an honour to be performing my favourite play. Whenever I saw this play, I wished I could do it. And here it was. I was elated when I got a call from Om ji to do it. And of course I had to say yes. He said the times would be adjusted and it was letter reading. We rehearsed a few days and I would keenly observe the nuances Om Puri explained. He told me—just absorb each word you read and feel it, bas. That bas was very difficult because the lines written were magical, emotional and overwhelming! As I saw the audience of the beautiful Rose Theatre in Toronto on the premiere show, I was ecstatic to see the house full of Punjabi crowd. As Om ji and I took our seats on the stage and started reading the letters, they cheered us! Word by word, gradually, the letters became me. I forgot I was reading. I was feeling, smiling and didn’t realise when tears started flowing. Highly emotional those lines were and I could hear people sniffing and crying. As I ended my last letter, the crowd stood up—to cheer Om ji and me! Some were smiling, some still crying! Some women came and hugged me and refused to leave. It’s such a high on stage! Instant overwhelming reactions from the audience. With my mascara running, eyes still tearful, my heart within was happy for being where I wanted to be. A lady pushed the crowd, came to me and hugged me tight, sobbed and said nothing! All she managed to say was, ‘you are my Amrita’! I saw a very happy Om ji smiling at me. Thanks for giving me my very favourite Om ji with love and gratitude, teri amrita! (Dutta is a Bollywood actor) |

On a song
Punjabi movies are rocking these days. Good script, good picturisation and most of all good music! The latest Punjabi release is Sirphire starring Monica Bedi, Priyanshu Chatterjee, Roshan Prince and Preet Harpal. And when a singer takes up acting, he does not forget that he is originally a singer. The track Gaani has Monica Bedi and Preet Harpal in a retro style with vocals by Preet himself. People love the track and it has all the elements to become a hot favourite.
Preet always! I have liked Preet Harpal ever since he came up with first album. I’m addicted to Gaani too. The lyrics are so different and the video is also colourful. I completely enjoy the song. Preeti Verma, GGDSD College Retro magic It is a dance track and the retro touch to it makes it very entertaining. The pace and tempo of the track is just so perfect that one can hear it at any point in time. Rajat Kalia, student, PU Right track Although I haven’t seen the movie but I want to watch it just because of the track. The lyrics are so funny that it really charges me up. The video also is made so well that one wants to just dance while watching it. Sania Kaur, housewife (As told to Sabia Talwar)

Think positive
Simmi Waraich I am a 24-year-old girl who is working in Ludhiana. My family tells me I am fairly good looking but I have low self-esteem. I worry that my boss does not like me. I want to shift to a better job but I do not want to be a burden on my parents in case I do not get a job for a few months. I worry a lot about the future. And I feel I always have bad luck. I want to get better but do not want medication. Jasleen, Chandigarh It sounds as if you, like many others, have common thinking errors which contribute to depression and anxiety. For example, you use words like ‘always’ and ‘never’ whereas if you used ‘sometimes’ or ‘often’, one would not feel that upset. Using words like always, never, can make us feel a situation is hopeless. Try substituting other words like, "At times I worry a lot and I feel I have bad luck often.” As children we often form beliefs based on what we are told. A child may develop feelings of inferiority when compared to a sibling. That feeling can persist as an adult. It can be useful to explore how one developed such beliefs and change them to more appropriate beliefs. Start keeping a thought diary of the things that upset you and the thoughts you get at that time. Discuss them with your therapist. Work on changing your self-image. Write down all the things you think you are not- all your weaknesses and then write alternatives to those thoughts. My sister lost her boyfriend in an accident a few years back. My father anyway did not want her to marry that boy. She lives with my parents who are conservative and overprotective. She says she does not wish to get married. She wants to do business but at times she gets very upset. And at times like that she even tries to harm herself by slashing her wrists or taking an overdose of pills. She lives in a small town with my parents. Money is not a concern for us. M Singh, Ambala Sometimes, a loss can continue for many years. In our culture, often parents may not be that communicative with their children over such issues. You said your family disapproved of the boy anyway. As such when we lose a person we care for, talking about the person with others is a part of the process whereby the grief is vented out and the process of recovery starts. Talk to your parents. How is their communication with her? Do not insist on her getting married immediately. Take some time to listen to her concerns, be non-judgmental and see whether you can all work out some short- term goals for her, like doing some course, spending time with some relatives of her age. If she has tried to harm herself, do get an assessment to rule out depression or mood disorders. Get counselling and if the doctor feels, medication which can help her to get back to a regular routine. Tell her you are there for her but you would like her to do something constructive with her life and help her draw out a plan for it. ( Dr Waraich is a Chandigarh-based psychotherapist) |

Signal of obesity
Dr K P Singh Leptin is not our obesity hormone. Leptin is our starvation hormone. Leptin is a protein that's made in the fat cells, circulates in the bloodstream, and goes to the brain. Leptin is the way your fat cells tell your brain that your energy thermostat is set right. In other words, when leptin levels are at a certain threshold for each person, it's probably genetically set when your leptin level is above that threshold, your brain senses that you have energy sufficiency, which means you can burn energy at a normal rate, eat food at a normal amount, engage in exercise at a normal rate, and you can engage in expensive processes, like puberty and pregnancy. When you starve your leptin level goes below your personal leptin threshold. When it does that, your brain senses starvation. That can occur at any leptin level, depending on what your leptin threshold is. Then several processes begin within the body to drive leptin levels back up. One includes stimulation of the vagus nerve, which runs between the brain and the abdomen. The vagus nerve is your energy storage nerve. The vagus nerve is turned on, so you get hungrier. Unfortunately, the relationship between leptin levels and obesity in humans is not straightforward. Rather than being leptin-deficient, many overweight individuals appear to have adequate amounts of leptin. Leptin levels appear to increase, rather than decrease, with an increase in the body’s fat stores. Recent research has demonstrated that only a small subset of overweight and obese individuals do not produce enough leptin or are insensitive to the effects of the hormone. Other lines of evidence suggest that obesity is related to deficient leptin receptors. Anti-obesity drugs n Orlistat n Lorcaserin n Sibutramine (Not avail able in market) n Rimonabant (Not avail able in market) n Metformin n Exenatide n Pramlintide Lifestyle modifications for obese persons n Avoid colas n Walk and exercise n Diet Bariatric surgery Bariatric surgery is an operation on the stomach and/or intestines that helps patients with extreme obesity to lose weight. This surgery is an option for people who cannot lose weight by other means or who suffer from serious health problems related to obesity. The surgery restricts food intake, which promotes weight loss and reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes. (Dr Singh is a Chandigarh-based endrocrinologist ) |

Tech boost to style
Fashion Diary could have helped Kate Middleton avert a faux pas; only if she had downloaded the fashion application, which warns against repeating the same outfit by archiving the date and the occasion you first wore it, on her phone. Technology comes to the rescue yet again, this time safeguarding your fashion sensibilities, updating you on the latest trends, guiding you on what's strictly out and helping you share your prized possessions. The four popular operating systems, Android, Blackberry, Apple and Windows have floated over a thousand fashion applications that promise unique features.
Fashion designer Anupamaa Dayal prefers the application Fashion News Version 9 on her phone to the fashion websites she used to access earlier. "Fashion changes with boundaries of countries, states and even towns. The application compiles the best of news from around the world." The applications are largely consumer or product-based. The former includes the likes of Pose, Trimirror Fashion and Fashion Sense, which enable one to improve one's dressing sense by taking feedback from users of the same websites or getting an idea as to what would suit them better. The latter are either the products of elitist fashion brands or smaller versions of fashion magazines. For that matter, Ralph Lauran's application provides videos and pictures of the in-house developments and events. It even chronicles events of the past and gives an account of the brand's history. Diane Von Furstenberg's application has the brand's latest creations on display and one can even shop through the application. The dictionary of fashion, however, is Fashion Key Life. The application judiciously picks up the best designs of renowned designers from around the world. Harper Bazaar and Vogue applications are equally useful. "I use them all the time. People in India are increasingly following latest fashion trends. Big brands are entering the market and applications are the simplest mediums to keep a tab on what's happening in the fashion world," says fashion designer Abdul Haldar. For this to happen, people should be fashion-conscious as well as tech-savvy. Just the way people download games on their smart phones, they should also be pro-active with fashion applications. "Another two years and people will use fashion applications to follow trends and educate themselves on the subject," adds Abdul. Fashion Language Guide & Quiz is one such application that teaches fashion. It educates one about the latest terms of fashion and even translates as well as explains the Hindi terms like Buti in English. Then there are applications that provide personal experiences like teaching make-up or doing a hair-do. Designer Rahul Mishra feels that till the time people start using applications on a regular basis, their purpose would not be served. "It depends on the application’s utility. What can bring a change in lifestyle will sustain the competition." He votes in favour of Fast Beauty, which gives simple make-up tips and is a hit with women. Many applications like that are likely to gain popularity, but only with time. Best of the lot
Besides the already mentioned applications, there are a few that are a huge hit with smart-phone users. These are downloaded the maximum and have very interesting features. Here is picking up the best among the lot. y Net-a-porter: This one is like a high fashion street on the phone, where you buy luxury stuff, ranging from bags, shoes, lingerie, clothes; the total number of luxury brand items posted on the application is 400. Navigation is easy and the shopping experience is as real as it can get in the virtual world. y Snapette: It's a photo-sharing application for the I-phone users, who can share photos of their latest buys or information about what's in through pictures. y Lustr: Besides an interesting name, the application is a storehouse of all the interesting information. It specifically briefs a fashionista on what he can get in the city and the right shops to go hunting for them. It even informs about the fashion events happening in a city's vicinity. y My style fashion assistant: It's a like being blessed with a secretary, what Anne Hathaway was to Meryl Streep in Devil's Wears Prada. The application helps you manage your wardrobe by giving tips on how to team up two different garments. All you need to do is just click good pictures. y The cut on the runway: What happens in the greenrooms, on the runaways, inside the designer studios; this application is the camera to fashion happening around the world. It also chronicles major events.

Short & sweet
If one has a deep, driving desire to achieve something, there is no stopping. Such has been the life of IB Verma. A post-graduate in political science, he chose the vocation of a librarian over a lecturer.
Close to four decades of service, he has been active not only as General Secretary, Chandigarh Librarians Association, and organised competitions, but also has been a prolific writer. A book of poems Do Adh Khile Phool, a self-help book, The Young Librarians Bible, and a number of encyclopedias on abbreviations, Verma has recently come out with the International Encyclopedia of Abbreviations in two volumes. "When I was working, students would often come and ask for books on abbreviations, which motivated me to do something in this regard," he says. And over the years he has been scanning newspapers, periodicals, making a comprehensive list of abbreviations, their extended forms and detailed notes. "This has been my passion. I cannot claim that I have it all, but yes there are most commonly used abbreviations not only in India but around the world. Also, it's the first-of-its-kind attempt across the globe," he adds. Now, he is on to the Hindi translation of The Young
Librarians Bible.

Sunny adores Vidya
Both are hot and they are bold, but after all, they are in this dirty business, and jealousy is bound to make its way to their hearts.
But not to worry, there is nothing serious here. It's just that Sunny Leone is all praise for Vidya Balan.
A few days ago, while talking about Ekta Kapoor, Sunny Leone revealed, "I saw Ekta's The Dirty Picture and was mesmerised by it. I don't think the word fat fits in my dictionary, but to carry off that look, and glamorously so, is a big feat. Hats off to Vidya for that, I'm almost jealous!" Well Sunny, keep your fingers crossed. If Ekta's film-making is anything to go by, you might just get a dirtier deal!

Dude, I’m back
Bollywood hottie Ashmit Patel who was last seen in the reality show Big Boss will again be seen on small screen as the host and mentor of the second season of Superstud-The School of Flirt. The show that will soon feature on UTV Bindass is a reality show looking for India’s Ultimate Casanova.
Tell us about superdude. After completing a successful season of Superstud I was very keen to take up the second season titled 'Superdude'. I have always loved being a part of reality shows with great concepts. Unlike movies they give you a chance to be yourself and engage with your audiences. I hope to do the same with Superdude and I look forward to start shooting for the same shortly. Are you in touch with any contestant from the first season? I did bump into one of them recently at a restaurant. I couldn’t recognise him. He was very confident and was with few girls. It feels good that the show paid off. The show is about teaching guys to be a casanova? Not really. We teach guys the art of being the best. WE teach them to be gracious with women, how to treat women and the art of flirting. This will be the second season of Superstud which has been renamed as Superdude. The concept is the same with few changes this time. The heart remains the same. In all 13 boys competing to be Superdude. I will be mentoring and guiding them to be the best. Did you get any other offers on television? Yes, a few but nothing that really excited me. It had to be something bigger and better. As nothing of that stature came my way. I am excited about doing one show a year. What about films? I have two films Parivaar and Good Night which are complete and I am looking forward to my Punjabi film as well. You haven’t gained much success in films don’t you feel television is a better bet? No. I believe in working hard, leaving the rest to destiny. A sleeper film might be a hit tomorrow. Hot & Cool: Ashmit Patel
