Discotheques in Chandigarh now invite celebrity deejays to pep up the music scene and add spice to their special evenings
Jasmine Singh

DJ Teri Yo Yo Honey Singh or Miss Pooja, scratching their tracks, putting in some dhinchak beats…resident DJs at discotheques in Chandigarh make people sway to the tunes for hours together. And then some Wednesday and Saturday they will spin in electronic notes; and on some days it is the psychedelic numbers.

Off late, though almost every weekend, BB messages announces a celebrity DJ hitting the music scene with something new. This is where it brings us; this is where we graduate from dancing on ‘filmi’ numbers to head-banging on dub step - courtesy celebrity DJ’s. We count it is as the new phenomenon or is the DJ scene in city is spinning 360 degree already?

Resident deejay with 10 Downing Street, Sameer, well-known through the band Chakra: Vu, has recently released his solo tech house track Closer By An Inch by an Italian record label. Hypnotic frames (on one of the biggest digital platforms for electronic music, www.beatport.com) looks at celebrity deejays as an added attraction for any place. “Resident DJs build up the crowd for four or five Saturdays, thereafter a celebrity deejay comes as a bonus or added attraction,” says Sameer. Celebrity DJ Nawed of Pulse Dubai performed at Altius along with Sameer and he bets on the crowd swaying till late in the night. “DJs coming from outside, once a week, of course bring in variety and newness to the entire music scene. Each DJ specialises in one genre or the other, which means city party-goers get to dance, listen and experience fresh notes.”

If one Saturday sexy-looking DJ Teri brings in electro house, hip hop and RnB to the city, our very own DJ Aqeel and DJ Suketu have made it a habit to scratch fresh notes at least once in two months. “I did not have an idea that the music scene in Chandigarh is so good. People are ready to lap up all kinds of genres, they also have an understanding about them as well,” says DJ Teri from Ukraine, who gave bang-on performance in the city a week ago. “I have performed in metros, surprisingly now I see many national and international DJs going to Chandigarh to perform,” an excited Teri adds.

It is for the same reason that DJ Leon, handling Blue Frog residency in Delhi, came to play in Chandigrah a few months back. “We’ve always had a decent crowd at our gigs in Chandigarh. People here are open-minded about music and because we bring in something different from the regular commercial music, they welcome us more.” Leon creates entire paraphernalia with his live percussion, synthesiser, laptops and controllers. It is fun to watch us,” he says.

Punjabi rocks in Punjab and filmi songs are something we are comfortable with. Experimentation has seeped in now, and hub-dub, electronic and psychedelic is something party-goers are now getting hooked on to. If they are not able to visit Delhi, they wait for celebrity deejays to come to the city.

Says Ginny Chawla, manager director, Altius, “It is a good way to introduce people to a new place like ours. Besides, we want to change the music scene of the place. The idea is to get the resident DJ to play for two weeks and then bring a celeb DJ.”

Hair stylist Adhuna Akhtar talks about her latest television show Be Blunt with Adhuna Akhtar and much more...
Mona

Right cut: Adhuna Akhtar
Right cut: Adhuna Akhtar

‘I am me, take me or leave me’ is the attitude that Adhuna Akhtar carries on her sleeve. Been so many years into the industry, a known hair stylist and a celeb’s wife, she is happy charting her own course.

Anudha will soon appear on television in TLC’s brand new show Be Blunt with Adhuna Akhtar. A makeover series, this will showcase the transformation of selected young women across India into gorgeous girls by Adhuna Akhtar and her brother Osh Bhabani.

What’s made you pick up a show? “I guess the show was made for us,” says Adhuna, who is very happy with how it has shaped up. “It’s a very interesting format. All the six episodes are fascinating stories that will give viewers something to take back in life.”

Being a hairstylist is what Adhuna imbibed while on trips to hair saloons with her mum. “My mum was very particular with her hair when I was growing up in UK. I would follow her on her ritualistic trips to the saloon. I loved the very feel of it. It also became a fitting expression of my creativity.” And, then she got success from the very beginning. “I have enjoyed my field, though I would like to say that I am more creative than business-minded.”

And, can a hair-cut really make a change? “Well, people spend so much on clothes and jewellery; hair stays with you 24X7. You will see for yourself how a simple cut can alter one’s perception about the self.”

While her children are the priority at the moment, Adhuna takes her role as star wife easy. “I have often been questioned on how difficult is it to be a star wife. I don’t see it this way. Farhan is comfortable to be with. I am who I am, I do not go out of the way to prove anything.”

Apart from the show, Adhuna is looking forward to more stint on telly and also go skydiving and explore the world. Meanwhile, she urges you to check out her show on TLC that goes on air on July 16, every night 10pm.

Small screen, bigger goals
Television actor Varun Badola says he is very choosy with the roles he essays
Mona

Varun Badola has had a long inning in the telly world. Presently playing Thakur Vikram Singh on Zee TV’s Phir Subah Hogi, Varun talks on his eventful journey and how entertainment industry has changed over the years.

“Acting is the only thing I know, so I would rather do it well,” says Varun who is rather choosy when it comes to roles. “The character that I play in Phir Subah Hogi is intriguing, which I enjoy the most,” says the actor, who took ten minutes off in between the shots for the interview.

Time is a rarity in a TV actor’s life. “Everything is happening in the telly world at a frantic pace. There is no time to sit down or share anything,” says Varun, who started his career in 1997. He has come on screen after two years and isn’t keen on much, least of all reality shows. “There was a time in reality TV as well that only the best would win,” says Varun, who has been part of the show Nach Baliye, as an anchor as well as contestant. “Now, there is too much happening behind the scenes,” he adds.

Interestingly, Varun has been assistant director to Tigmanshu Dhulia and has also written dialogues for Astitva...Ek Prem Kahani. He has written and directed his show Aek Chabhi Hai Padoss Mein.

In fact, it’s direction that he is heading for now. And he is ready with the first draft of the film that he wishes to direct. “It will take at least two more drafts before I can approach someone with the script.”

Meanwhile, watch him play Vikram Singh — wise, learned, brave and a great leader with a fatal flaw —in Phir Subah Hogi.

Myth & more
Amrit Sagar, director of the award winning film 1971, feels humour is not the only form of entertainment
Jasmine Singh

Love triangles, patriotism, murder mystery, horror, life in brothels, family sagas, child problems; not to forget the behind-the-camera life of journalists — Hindi cinema has already explored many issues. But, mythological subjects are something that directors need to pan their camera upon much more.

Amrit Sagar, director of the national award winning movie 1971, is ready with his next, Rabba Main Kya Karoon, and when it comes to creating a mythological blockbuster, the director sees a lot of potential; at the same time he finds it an expensive proposition as well. “My family and all members of Moti Sagar Productions are popular for mythological TV serials, but I wanted to make cinema that had all the elements of entertainment,” says Amrit.

So the Arshad Warsi, Paresh Rawal and Raj Babbar starrer, Rabba Main Kya Karoon defines all the elements of entertainment. “This movie celebrates the lighter side of life with aplomb. Unlike other regular love stories, this one explores what happens after people fall in love. The audience is going to love it,” he says.

From a sensitive topic like 1971 to Rabba Main Kya Karoon, Amrit doesn’t want to limit his reach to selected topics. “I don’t see humour as the only form of entertainment. 1971 dealt with life of prisoners of the Indo-Pak war, it got critical acclaim before it went on to win the National Award for Best Hindi Film. Now, this was also a different kind of entertainment,” he adds.

Coming back to what the family is known for — mythological films and TV serials, says Amrit, “As I said, I would love to make a full-fledged movie on this topic. Mahabharata and Ramayana can be made it into a film because it has so many things that people across all ages can relate to them. Budget is the only issue here. Like other films, a mythological film also requires a ‘lavish’ and a ‘professional’ treatment because it is quite a responsibility to make movies on this subject.”

Amrit Sagar, a Kasmiri Punjabi, wants to make a movie based on different aspects of the place. “My grandfather had written a lot of short stories on Kashmir. I hope I can make a film on this place.”

Facebook, Twitter lowering your confidence?

Ever felt low if your friend gets more likes or tweets than you? You're not alone. Comparisons on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter make people feel anxious and under-confident, according to a poll.

The poll also found that more than half said these sites had altered their behaviour, especially suffering a negative impact from social media. Two-thirds said they were unable to relax or to doze off after spending time on the sites.

And one quarter of those polled said they had been left facing difficulties in their relationships or workplace after becoming confrontational online.

In total, 298 people were polled by Salford Business School at the University of Salford, for the charity Anxiety UK. Of those, 53 per cent said the launch of social networking sites had changed their behaviour and of those, 51 per cent said the impact had been negative.

The research also demonstrated the addictive powers of internet, with 55 per cent of people saying they felt "worried or uncomfortable" when they could not access their Facebook or e-mail accounts.

More than 60 per cent of people said they felt compelled to turn off electronic gadgets in order to have a break, with one in three of those surveyed saying they switched the devices off several times each day.

The findings about behaviour changes after using social networking sites came from smaller in-depth research which was then carried out by Anxiety UK. Nicky Lidbetter, the charity's chief executive said: "If you are predisposed to anxiety it seems that the pressures from technology act as a tipping point, making people feel more insecure and more overwhelmed." — IANS

Par Excellence
Stay behind the ball
Jesse Grewal

Once we have completed the backswing by rotating our body and lifting our arms we need to make the correct transition into the downswing. While the backswing begins with the upper body followed by the turning of the hips, the downswing begins with the lower body.

The turning of the hips makes the legs react and transfer the weight back towards the front foot. It is important to understand that the hips turn to the left within the framework of the body or a line drawn just outside the left foot (for right handed golfers). The legs and the hips do not slide towards the target. The turning of the hips creates a pulling force on the arms and the club leading to a correct downswing sequence. The upper body resists this turning move and creates more coil or stored energy which is released into the ball at impact. The upper body stays behind the ball till the impact.

In a sliding action the upper body moves ahead of the ball and thereby creates a steep angle of approach of the club leading to a loss of distance.

Take an alignment stick and place it into the ground just outside the left foot (picture 1). You could use a broken shaft or an umbrella. When we start the downswing the hips should turn to the left within the alignment stick (picture 2). The legs should not slide and hit the stick. While doing this the left leg would straighten at impact or remain only slightly bent. In a sliding move the knees bend a lot. When the lower

body slides the legs and the hips would hit the stick (picture 3). This would also bring the upper body ahead of the ball. A good rotation of the body without a sway or slide in both the backswing and the forward swing helps in creating a powerful golf swing and also results in more ‘on centre’ impact of the ball on the club face.

This leads to longer and straighter shots!

Master Chef
Minor obsessions
Kandla Nijhowne

Ebelskivers, yes you read it right are one of my harmless, ‘minor’ obsessions! Pronounced ‘able-skeevers’ these traditional Danish pancakes are in a distinctive shape of a sphere. Somewhat similar in texture to American pancakes, they have the look of a popover.

Warm and golden hued, they are the most gorgeous avatar possible of the humble pancake! They were a regular breakfast treat for me during my student days in England, transforming me into instant fairyland, each time I dived into one!

For a change I shall not delve into their nutritional value! Let it be said they pack a good punch of carbohydrates to keep you going all day! They can be cooked, using the good old “idli” moulds, placed over a wide, heavy fry pan. The given batter can also be cooked on a fry pan to make sumptuous pancakes to serve with jam and cream or a cheesy savoury sauce.

Method

  • In a bowl, mix flour with sugar, baking powder, cardamom, and salt.
  • In a small bowl, beat egg to blend with milk and 2 tablespoons butter. Add liquids to dry ingredients and stir until evenly moistened.
  • Place the idli moulds (preferably non-stick) in a fry pan over medium-low heat.
  • Brush the inner moulds lightly with melted butter and fill each to slightly below the rim with batter.
  • In about 1 ½ minutes, a thin crusts will form on bottoms of balls but the centers will still be wet.
  • Poke the crust with a slender wood skewer and gently pull shell to rotate the pancake ball until about half the cooked portion is above the cup rim and uncooked batter flows down into cup.
  • Cook until crust on bottom of ball is again firm enough to pierce, about another minute, then rotate ball with skewer until the ridge formed as the pancake first cooked is on top.
  • Cook, turning occasionally with skewer, until balls are evenly browned and no longer moist in the centre, another 10 to 12 minutes.
  • Check by piercing center of last pancake ball added to pan with skewer. It should come out clean.
  • Lift cooked balls from pan and serve hot with cream and jam or a savoury cheese sauce.

A leaf from history
Vasudha Gupta

The charm of several aspects of life in India is that it is not always possible to explore the historical perspectives till one feels the need. It was this need that guided Aneesh Bhanot and Gurjit Singh to compile a book on the history of gurdwaras. Titled Gurdwaras of The City Beautiful, the book goes back in time to bring out the facts and stories about various gurdwaras in Chandigarh.

Talking about the journey, Aneesh says, “There was at a point when I was looking for information and never found it. One year later, the book has glossy pictures, a paragraph on the story behind each gurdwara and a detail of the sewas done there. One of the biggest challenges was validation and cross-verification of facts. “Next was seeking the permissions for photographs. This is where Chandigarh Samuh Gurudwara Prabandhak Sangathan stepped in,” Aneesh says. Apart from the text in English, it is being translated into Gurmukhi by Gurjit. Also the co-author of the book, his role has been vital. Going by the philosophy of his mother, Aneesh stands by her thoughts, which say that he was pre-ordained to do this. “I am just fulfilling a role,” he shares.

The runaway groom

Feel good factor: Mohit Chauhan
Feel good factor: Mohit Chauhan

One of the perks of marriage is that you have someone to share your thoughts with and someone to come back home to, says singer Mohit Chauhan, who had a hush hush marriage with journalist Prarthana Gehlot, in a quiet corner in Himachal Pradesh.

"I didn't take the plunge for a long time. Now I am glad I did. I now have someone to share my thoughts and my creative ideas with. Most importantly, I now have someone to come back home to in Mumbai," he said adding that he is planning a "reception for friends". Mohit tied the knot with Prarthana on June 29 at a hotel in Barog, near Kasauli hills in Solan district, Himachal Pradesh. Born to Krishana Rana and B.K. Rana, the singer belongs to Nahan in Sirmaur district.

Now he is looking forward to a new phase in his life as well as his new album. "My wife is part of the album. The whole idea of doing a non-film album is to make a personal statement," he said.

Excerpts from the interview:

Why so secretive about your marriage?

(Laughs in embarrassment) I am here in my hometown in Himachal and still going through the post wedding rituals. My wedding was a very private affair for close family only. I will now have a reception for friends in Mumbai or Delhi. As soon as I am back in Mumbai, I will take a call on the reception.

Tell us about your wife.

Her name is Prarthana. So I've no choice but to be deeply religious in life (laughs). It’s a love-cum-arranged marriage. Prarthana and I have known each other for some years now. She was my friend, and then we thought we should take our friendship to another level.

So you married your best friend?

Not quite. She was a friend. I liked spending time with her...The vibration between the two of us is wonderful. With Prarthana, I felt she was not just a friend but also someone who contributed substantially to my singing.

Do you feel more complete after marriage?

Getting married is definitely a very comforting feeling. I didn't take the plunge for a long time. Now I am glad I did. I now have someone to share my thoughts and my creative ideas with. Most importantly, I now have someone to come back home to in Mumbai.

Is Prarthana interested in music?

She is interested in music. But she isn't a singer. She is a writer and journalist. But she loves music. And she is contributing in terms of ideas and lyrics to my songs in my new album which would be out soon.

So did you go through all the rituals like a good boy?

(laughs) Traditionally, our Himachal weddings take a week. My marriage took two days. I return to Mumbai in some time. I've been getting calls asking where I am. I need to get back to work.

Tell me about your new album?

This would be my third solo album. There will be one song in English. I've also dedicated one song to my roots in Himachal. I've composed all the tunes. My wife is part of the album. A private album has to be about the artiste. It gives the musician, complete freedom to say what he wants to.

Have you had anything comparable to Rockstar coming your way?

That was once in a lifetime opportunity. I am thankful to god I got it. No, I haven't got a similar offer. Yes, I am working with A.R. Rahman again. But for an opportunity like Rockstar, I'll have to wait for a while. — IANS

Filmdom needs more talent: Om Puri

Thumbs up: Om Puri
Thumbs up: Om Puri

National Award winning actor, Om Puri feels that filmdom does not require any guiding force as people are involved in producing good cinema, but feels there should be a greater influx of talent.

"Movies are improving now. Many young directors are making good movies, but the problem is that the number of such filmmakers is less... There are around eight-nine such directors who make very sensible films," Om Puri said.

He said while attending an awards ceremony.

Recently seen in Agneepath, Om Puri feels that the film industry is not guided by any trend, the only guiding factor is box office business. "The main purpose of the industry is to make money. Money is important because if the film does not make money, then how will they make the next film? In any other business, if there is 20 percent profit, then people are happy. But here 100 per cent profit is expected," he said.

"They say that, ‘Initial lag gaya'. If there is a big star, then people are bound to watch the movie on the first day. If they do not like the film, they discourage people not to watch it. The main base of the film industry is business," he added.

The 61-year-old, known for his performance in films like Arohan, Ardh Satya and Maqbool, will next be seen in Prakash Jha's Chakravyuh. — IANS

Designing for Cocktail was easy: Anaita Shroff

Character sketch: Anaita Shroff Adajania
Character sketch: Anaita Shroff Adajania

Chic designs, florescent colours and tribal prints dominate the wardrobes of the lead actors in Cocktail, which is grabbing eyeballs for its characters that take fashion forward. Designer Anaita Shroff Adajania says making the ultra modish clothes was not that difficult.

The film is directed by Anaita's husband, Homi Adajania and it revolves around the lives of three friends - Veronica, Meera and Gautam - played by Deepika Padukone, Diana Penty and Saif Ali Khan respectively.

"The characters were defined nicely by Homi. He was very clear on the characters and gave us a lot of information on the personalities of these characters. And having all that information, it was easy for us to understand how they would dress," Anaita said.

Talking about the characters, the designer describes Veronica as the most fashionable in the film, while Meera is a shy person. "Veronica is a very fashion forward person. She loves fashion and is happy to flaunt her body. It was like mixing high street fashion with luxury designer labels as somebody like her would do," she said. "While Meera is a simple girl who came from Delhi to London. She comes in her Indian clothes but slowly adapts to western clothes. She is not the one to flaunt skin and is shy. So even in her western wear, the choice of clothing is conservative," she added.

Anaita has previously designed for movies including Dhoom 2, Love Aajkal and Ra One, apart from styling for advertisements.

She says that designing for movies is the "toughest" and added: "I enjoy every aspect of styling which I do, be it for a magazine or advertising. The only taxing thing about films is time commitment. I hate being tied down to such long commitment. But I enjoy, if the team is organised." — IANS

It’s a girl!

Reality TV star Kourtney Kardashian and her fiance Scott Disick have welcomed their first daughter. The couple, who already have a two-year-old son, Mason, have named the new born daughter Penelope Scotland, reported a channel.

She had an easy delivery. Penelope is so cute. She looks just like Mason," she said.

Two years ago, when Mason was born, Kourtney and Scott showed his birth on the family's TV show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians. All’s well with Miley
Miley Cyrus sports a lean look

Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus has been sporting a very lean look off late but her personal trainer says the actress-singer is in perfect health. The 19-year-old's pilates instructor, Mari Winsor, said that Cyrus has been training hard for the last four months, rather than dieting and that is the reason she has been sporting a particularly slim and toned body, reported a website.

"I think people need to chill out. She's healthy and she feels good, that's the main thing. She's smart about her body. She wanted to sculpt her body, that's all," said Winsor.

"Miley's toned physique is the result of a gluten-free diet and daily pilates classes. I wanted to get her shoulders down and get her to relax her upper body. If you notice, her posture is a lot better. She works hard. When this girl comes in, she is on fire. She's focused," she added.

Cyrus got engaged to actor Liam Hemsworth on May 31. She is already planning her nuptials. "Nothing has been definite yet. She's just pretty much brainstorming everything about her wedding. I know she wants to have a summer wedding, something on the water maybe," a source said. — PTI

Hubby go lucky

Singer Carrie Underwood, who is married to Canadian sports star Mike Fisher, says she is happiest when she is with her husband and her dogs. "What makes me happiest? My husband and my dogs - Ace and Penny. They are just happy to see me, no matter what. I don't have to explain anything to them. They love me unconditionally. They make my life better," a website quoted Underwood as saying.

Remembering her initial years, the 29-year-old said: "At the beginning of my career, I was trying to work out how to keep up with everything and maintain my sanity. I probably got more stressed and worried than I should have."

She feels her family has cooperated nicely with her showbiz career. "Sometimes mom will call and say, 'There was someone sitting outside in a car park taking pictures for two hours.' I don't think that my decisions should have affected their lives the way it has. But they have dealt with it really well," she said. — IANS

Spare the rod, spoil the child!

Pop diva Madonna is not pleased with her 15-year-old daughter Lourdes after she was recently spotted smoking a cigarette. "I wasn't very happy. I am a tough mother but I don't think I'm as tough as I should be. I think I need to be tougher. It's hard -- every day is a negotiation. But cigarette smoking, I'm not very fond of — for anyone," she said.

The 53-year-old, whose new album MDNA bombed after one week, is seen smoking in one of her recent videos, but she defended her own actions against her daughter's, reported a publication online.

"I don't smoke. That's just an accessory. There's a difference. Lourdes smoked that cigarette before I did that video," she added.

The Queen of Pop said it is difficult raising her children alone. "To be a single mother of four, work as hard as I do, live my life in a metaphorical fishbowl, it's pretty challenging," she said. — PTI

Negative role, positive approach

Sachin Chhabra The handsome Punjabi actor from Delhi, Sachin Chhabra who was earlier seen in Fear Files has now got to play a negative role. He plays Aakash in Dheeraj Kumar’s popular family show Niyati. He portrays a different role and shares screen with with renowned Television actors Sachin Shroff, Jayashri Soni and Parakh Madan.

Having done 50 commercials and played parts in Meri Doli Tere Angana, Main Kab Saas Banoongi and Do Hanson Ka Joda, he is being recognised as an actor with substance. We talk to Sachin Chhabra about his career and take on his character Aakash.

You have been very choosy about picking TV shows, why?

It is my career and my choices. At the end of the day good serials make business. If I get to play a good role, I feel happier. Right now, I am happy doing Rishton Ke Bhanwar Mein Uljhi-Niyati.

You are best known as the boy from Jaago Re commercial. How did Niyati happen?

It came out of the audition. I was getting offers here and there, but nothing really excited me as an actor. Then I got a call from Creative Eye Production and this serial fell in my lap. It makes me feel good.

How easy or difficult is to play a character like Aakash?

It is as easy and difficult at the same time. Easy because I am from Punjabi background and that helped me fitting into the role. However, getting a typical negative shade character is a big challenge.

How is your equation with your co-stars in the show?

I love them. I tell you this is best team I have ever worked with. All are very co-operative. I connect wonderfully with all my co-stars.

Tell us about your character?

Aakash is a rich businessman who come to Nagpur for a business deal. There he Rishi Shastri and saves him from goons in which he gets hurt. Rishi asks him to stay with them for some days. Aakash falls in love with Niyati and makes her believe that Amber is dead.

What according to you is the USP of this show?

There are a lot of elements. I know there had been many shows like Niyati but this show is an interesting family drama.

Are you happy with the way your career has shaped up?

Yes, because I am going ahead with my career on my own terms. I have earned a lot of respect from directors and viewers. I am blessed that many people think I am a worthwhile actor.

Time alone: Aishwarya SakhujaActress Aishwarya Sakhuja isn’t a party person. In fact, the actress prefers spending quality time at home with her family and friends. “I am a homely person. She adds, “Whenever I get any time I go off to sleep. Sleep is a greater de-stresser. I also love to watch movies. Be it Bollywood, Hollywood or French movies, I can watch any film.”
