21-day course to update curators’ knowledge
Mohali, July 9 Addressing participants, Pandove emphasised on the long awaited need of this kind of course for standardising and upgrading wicket laying and ground maintenance procedures at all cricket-playing centres. He stated that the idea of this course was to lay down a certain standard for preparing of wickets all over the country. The focus would be to prepare good cricketing wickets, which would have something for everyone i.e. fast bowlers, spin bowlers and batsmen. Pandove said it had been seen that the Indian team’s performance abroad had not been encouraging because back home the tendency was to shy away from making fast and bouncy tracks. He said the country had different types of soils, which would make the character of wickets in different centres invariance to each other like the western part of the country has red soil, whereas southern and northern parts have black soil. He emphasised that the curators’ job was as important as that of an umpire, coach, trainer or a match referee. He hoped that this course will go a long way in updating the knowledge of the curators and will help them to make better pitches and grounds in their respective centres, which in turn will be a great help in enhancing the performance of cricketers in the domestic circuit, particularly the bowlers. He was sure that the curators’ certification would also give an opportunity to those, who clear this in terms of financial gain and recognition. He advised the participants to take advantage of this to assimilate as much knowledge and know-how from the faculty and use it in their respective areas of operation. About 30 participants from 30 affiliated states of the BCCI have sent their representatives to attend this 21-day course. The BCCI had laid down the criteria of one curator from each state association for this course and the member associations were asked to send their main curator for this course. Vankat Sundram, chairman, BCCI’s pitch and ground committee, who is also a member of the faculty, thanked Pandove for taking this initiative. |
