Finally, some progress on Bikram Chowk-Satwari flyover project
Jammu, July 7 When the proposal for construction the flyover was made, it was informed to the authorities concerned that the four-lane flyover would be constructed over the Bikram Chowk-Satwari stretch at a cost of Rs 128 crore. But, in the approved project, it has been mentioned that the flyover would be constructed from the Bikram Chowk to the Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar. While briefing the Chief Minister on the project, Bhagat claimed that the flyover would be completed within three years. Bhagat told The Tribune that after a survey conducted by M/s Rites, it came to their notice that the road from the women’s college to the Bikram Chowk was the most congested, so it has been decided to construct the flyover over this stretch. “Furthermore the length of the flyover depends upon the availability of funds,” he said, adding that funds worth Rs 95 crore has been approved for this project. The proposed flyover would be an elevated corridor comprising 38 pillars, two subways and four bus ways. “Tendering of this project would start on July 15 and work, most probably is to start by the end of November this year, as there will be international competitive bids for this project,” he said. An amount of Rs 6 crore has been sanctioned as relief and rehabilitation component, he added. After the construction of the flyover, the inter-state and inter-district traffic on the Kathua and RS Pura routes will be regulated through the flyover.

Traders flay govt over power cuts
Jammu, July 7 They said that they had suffered huge losses due to long and unscheduled power cuts. “Tourists and pilgrims putting up in Jammu are facing great inconvenience and hardships due to prolonged
power cuts, especially during the night hours. The tourists, who check in their hotels, undergo trauma of prolonged power cuts at night that creates hassle with the hotel management, which sometimes results into the refund of the room rents paid by them. The same leads to unnecessary clashes,” said hoteliers, while holding a three-hour-long interaction with Madan Lal Sharma, the Member of Parliament from Jammu-Poonch segment. Inderjeet Khajuria, president of All Jammu Hotels and Lodges Association said that the government should create a separate circuit with power grid at bus stand, lower Gummat, Vinayak Bazar Jewel Chowk, Gurdwara Sundar Singh road, Raghunath Bazzar, Residency road and Hari market and Indra Chowk areas. The representatives of other trade organisations also complained about “anti-Jammu” tourism and pilgrimage attitude of the authorities, particularly the traffic police, who were diverting all vehicles carrying pilgrims to Amarnath shrine via Jammu bypass. They also complained about slow process of work on tourism related projects in Jammu including construction of artificial lake, renovation of Mubark Mandi heritage complex, laying of cable car from Mubark Mandi Complex to Bahu Fort and Mamaya hill top. Madan Lal Sharma advised them to raise their problems before the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. |

Grid rectifies transmission line fault in record time
Jammu, July 7
This had brought the generation of 450-MW Baglihar Hydroelectric Project of M/s Power Development Corporation (PDC), J&K, to a halt. The Power Development Corporation had noticed frequent tripping on both circuits of the line. The PDC recently requested the Power Grid to rectify the problem, so that unnecessary tripping on both the circuits of the line could be brought to the zero level. The corporation was requested to shut down from July 6 to 8 for rectifying the problem. This included the shutting down of the 220 KV 132 KV, 33KV and 11 KV lines running beneath the 400 KV Baglihar-Kishenpur transmission line. After the corporation agreed to shut down the lines, the Power Grid mobilised its engineers, supervisors and technicians from Narwal, Kishenpur and Batote, immediately. Loopholes in the Jagti plan
Jammu, July 7 The loopholes in the construction of the township are quite evident from the problems being faced by the people there. The township has not been getting water supply for the past two days, and this is not for the first time that they are facing such problem. Earlier, there had been an acute shortage of electricity for two months soon after the ‘Darbar’ moved to Srinagar and then water shortage during the extreme summer season. The present water requirement of the township is 5,000 gallons per day, which will increase in the coming days as the authorities are planning to shift 700 more families to Jagti in a month’s time. For 20,000 people, the authorities have installed only two water pumping systems. Shuban Ji, a resident of Jagti, said: “We had better facilities at the Purkhoo camp. At least we could get adequate electricity and water there. Here, we are at the mercy of God, living without water for the past two days, and the supply of electricity is also not very good”. Relief Commissioner, Jammu, RK Pandita, while talking to The Tribune, denied any shortage of water in the township. He said the people there did not have any problem. Chief engineer, PHE, BR Dogra says at the time of construction of the town, the Relief Commissioner did not contact them for expert advice. As a result, the water supply project for Jagti is not up to the mark. Since they were not involved in the construction of the project, they cannot take over the project at this point of time. He, however, opined that the project should be outsourced to some agency so that it worked smoothly. |

‘Dor’ making a passion for them
Jammu, July 7 The “dor” is made on the roadside, parks and in any available space. Hundreds and thousands of meters of cotton thread is painstakingly prepared over many weeks to make it sharp enough to cut “dors” of other kites during competitions. The thin cotton thread gets its strength from the special treatment given to it which includes, the applying of paste made of glue and finely powdered glass, which is thinly spread on the thread in a special way to make it sharp. “Sometimes a coating of wax is also used on the string to make it slick and difficult to cut even additives. Eggs are also added to the mixture to make the cotton thread more lethal,” said Gurjeet Singh Sasan from Amritsar who had set up a makeshift “dor” shop at Gandhi Nagar. “The more lethal the cotton thread, the more the price of the ‘dor’ ball, which is sold at a price ranging from Rs 75 to Rs 400,” said another thread maker. “At times people pay double the money to buy strong ‘dor’. On also book orders for special ‘dors’. For many it is the passion beyond doubt,” said a ‘dor’ maker, Sunil Kumar, who has come all the way from Haryana. |

Authority fails to identify land
Jammu, July 7 Sources said that Authority have slowed down the process after the opposition from the shopkeepers, who are against their eviction and also due to the lack of funds at the disposal of JDA for the construction of four such buildings in different parts of the city. The directions were given by Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Ali Muhammad Sagar, in February this year during a high level meeting to review the modernisation plan of the Bus stand, which is in dilapidated condition. No major developmental work has taken place in past many years, despite that fact that it hosts thousands of passengers daily. It was further directed that officials would study the models of various newly constructed and renovated bus stands in the country before the modernisation plan is initiated. Four multi-storied parking buildings were proposed at Bus Stand, Super Bazzar, Doctors lane and Kachi Chawni. “The project has been put under cold storage as there is no coordination within the officials. The problem is that it is a huge project and needs a major investment,”said a senior officer from JDA. “When the night falls, one can easily see residents of the city and adjoining streets parking their vehicles in the lanes and by-lanes on both sides of the road. In case of emergency, ambulances don’t find space”, said Sudeep Sharma of Rehari colony. |
