Bathinda, June 29
The fishermen released from Karachi jail in Pakistan were welcomed by the local unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Bathinda railway station. The fishermen were caught in Pakistan’s territorial waters while fishing in the deep seas and have been repatriated. They were on their way to Ahmedabad by the Jammu-Ahmedabad Express that halted for 20 minutes at the Bathinda railway station.

State executive of the BJP and former chairman of the Improvement Trust, Mohan Lal Garg, said they offered tea, snacks and sweets to the fishermen on the orders of the All India Convener of Fishermen Cell of the BJP.

Garg said that after staying overnight at Amritsar, the fishermen headed towards Ahmedabad in Gujarat.

The fishermen in three different bogies of the train gave a mixed reaction about their release. Many of them were arrested for the first time and had spent 10 to 18 months in the Karachi jail.

A few of them had been caught for the second time and said they would again start fishing in the sea.

“But this time, we would be more cautious and not go far away,” said Jai Parkash from the Korinar area of Ahmedabad.

He said it was his second time in a Pakistan jail as earlier, he had spent three years after being caught fishing in Pakistan’s territorial waters. “I will again do the same work as I have no other option,” he said.

Jai Prakash said this time, he was incarcerated for 10 months.

Many of them managed to inform their family members while the others were seen pleading for cell phones so that they too should inform their near and dear ones about their release.

Dilip Kumar from Diu said they had received basic facilities, including food and shelter, in Pakistan jail.

Abohar, June 29
Minister of State for Railways, KH Muniyappa, has intervened to get the rail roko stir deferred. Former MP Virendra Kataria was to lead the stir at Abohar and Fazilka on July 1 to express his anguish over the delay in making the Abohar-Fazilka rail link operational.

The 42.11 km rail project had cost the railways about `276 crore during the last eight years. The volunteers of the “India against Corruption” had been staging a dharna for the last 48 days over the issue on the railway complex here.

Some NGOs at Fazilka had later joined hands to spearhead a similar agitation there.

Speaking over the phone, Virendra Kataria, former president of the Pradesh Congress Committee, confirmed that after the publcation of the story in The Tribune, Muniyappa had convened a high-level meeting in his office and spoke to the Railway Board chairman and the general manager and the divisional managers concerned, reiterating his wish to inaugurate the long-awaited rail link around July 15.

He desired Kataria to tell the protesters that necessary measures to finish the task were in the final phase now and the stir might delay the field work.
