Moga, June 23
In another gruesome case of murder within a family in the past two days, a 65-year-old man was allegedly killed by his son at Landeke village in Moga district following a property dispute on Saturday.

On Thursday, a drug-addict had allegedly killed his son over a property dispute at Saido Ke village in Nihalsinghwala sub-division of the district.

As per the details available from the police in today’s incident, Gurcharan Singh, an ex-serviceman, was allegedly murdered by his son Manjinder Singh with a sharp-edged weapon.

Manjinder resorted to committing the crime after his father and mother objected to the sale of two and a half acres of ancestral agriculture land without the prior permission of the family elders.

Manjinder, who was into the business of finance and property dealing, entered into a deal for sale of his ancestral property yesterday. When he informed about it to his mother this morning, she objected to it and asked her son to strike off the deal.

Manjinder started beating his mother over the issue. When Gurcharan, a former Army jawan, came to the rescue of his wife, he was brutally attacked by his son with a sharp-edged weapon.

Manjinder, who was also injured in the brawl, reportedly attempted suicide after leaving his father almost dead. Both were immediately rushed to the district hospital by their neighbours.

Gurcharan was declared brought dead at the hospital while Manjinder was referred to a hospital in Ludhiana where his condition was said to be serious.

He succumbed to his injuries there.

A criminal case of murder had been registered against Manjinder, the SHO of the local police station said.

Muktsar, June 23
The Muktsar circle of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) is functioning with nearly half of the sanctioned strength of employees. At present, only 1,557 employees are working against the total sanctioned strength of 2,863 for Muktsar, Malout, Gidderbaha, Badal, Abohar and Fazilka divisions. As many as 1,306 posts are yet to be filled.

Of the sanctioned 714 posts of linesmen, 356 are vacant. Similarly, posts of 459 assistant linesmen are yet to be filled. As many as 44 posts of junior engineers (JEs) are also vacant, against the sanctioned 131 posts. At least seven sub-divisional officers (SDOs) are yet to be appointed.

The condition of the clerical staff is also the same, as nearly 37 upper division clerks, 92 lower division clerks and 13 revenue accountants are required for the smooth functioning of the department. The situation is such that only 15 cashiers are doing the work against 76 sanctioned posts, which means 61 posts are vacant and public has to wait in queues to pay their electricity bills. The corporation is functioning with only eight chowkidars and 18 such posts are vacant.

A visit to the PSPCL office here revealed that the farmers had been making rounds of the office to get their old and damaged transformers replaced.

A farmer, Bood Singh of Tejakhera village in Fazilka district who had come to replace an old transformer damaged due to heat, said, "We have completed the formalities but the installation of new transformer is taking time due to staff shortage."

When contacted, Dilbar Singh, deputy chief engineer, Muktsar, said, "The available workforce is trying its best to do the work well on time, but sometimes staff shortage hits the functioning."

"The matter is well in the notice of higher-ups. We even send the staff shortage report every month, but the staff is yet to be recruited," added Singh.

Faridkot, June 23
“There are many reasons people eat. Some eat to live while others live to eat. Why do you eat?”

This is the promo of the next episode of Satyamev Jayate to be aired on June 24 (Sunday) on TV channels wherein Bollywood actor Aamir Khan will lend his voice to the campaign demanding a ban on pesticides and urging customers to go in for ‘true’, uncontaminated food.

At a time when agriculture entails extensive use of toxic pesticides and chemical fertilisers, which pose a threat to both environmental and human safety, Indians should demand a right for safe food, said Dr GV Ramanjaneyulu, the executive director of the Centre for Sustainable Agriculture (CSA) in Andhra Pradesh, and Umendra Dutt, the executive director of the Kheti Virasat Mission (KVM) in Jaitu, Punjab.

Secunderabad (Andhra Pradesh)-based CSA and the KVM are two NGOs selected for the Satyamev Jayate’s episode to be telecast on June 24. For the last over one decade, the two NGOs have focused on developing and promoting locally-adapted farming system and sustainable farming practices, sans use of chemicals.

“The excessive and unregulated use of pesticides and chemical fertilisers in agriculture, farmers caught in its vicious circle and pesticides leaching into groundwater. How is it playing havoc with human life? This is the main theme of the Satyamev Jayate episode,” said Umendra Dutt.

On June 29, five days after the show, there would also be a live show ‘Asar’ (Impact) with Aamir Khan, for which office-bearers of the CSA and the KVM have been invited to participate.
