Clash between rival groups leaves commuters stranded
Ferozepur, June 15
According to the information available, some Congress and SAD-BJP workers had entered into an argument during the MC bypoll for ward 4 held last week. The argument had reached a flashpoint when the turban of a BJP worker fell down during a heated exchange. However, the timely intervention of the police prevented things from taking an ugly turn. However, as an act of revenge, a group of persons allegedly belonging to the SAD-BJP today attacked Grover, a close aide of Congress MLA Parminder Singh Pinki. In his statement, Grover said while he was going towards the cantonment today, some motorcycle-borne persons, who were following him, stopped his car short of the rail overbridge and then thrashed him in which he received injuries, His car was also badly damaged. Grover was admitted to the Civil Hospital. Later, after the incident, the enraged Congress workers sat down on dharna and blocked traffic on the Mall road near the railway overbridge for more than two hours. DSP Jagjit Singh, who immediately reached the spot, pacified the Congress workers and assured them of taking stringent action against the attackers. Meanwhile, condemning the attack, Pinki said SAD-BJP workers have unleashed a reign of terror to frighten the party cadre which was not healthy for peace and harmony. Hardial Singh Mann, SSP, said the police has booked three persons, namely, Iqbal Mallah, Hira and Dimpy Passi besides a few others in the case on the basis of Grover's statement. The SSP said no persons will be allowed to take law in their hands. He added that the police was enquiring into the matter following which more arrests will be made, if required. The SSP said the police had taken immediate action as soon as the incident was reported. So, there was no need for the Congress workers to block the traffic as it caused severe inconvenience to the commuters. |

Rice mill owners told to cover shellers
by June 18
Faridkot, June 15 “The state government does not have the motive to harass the rice millers but we are duty bound to implement the directions of the High Court,” said Ravi Bhagat, during a meeting with the rice millers, food and supply department and the Punjab Pollution Control Board
(PPCB) officials. To ensure that no rice mill violates the HC orders, the DC said after June 18, the food and supply department and PPCB officials will inspect the shellers. The DC also briefed the meeting about the orders of the High Court regarding the storage of rice husk. He directed the rice mill owners to construct storage sheds up to 10 feet high. The sheds should have only one door and a specific device to control pollution on the roof. He also directed the construction of a concrete passage for the transportation of rice and paddy so that dust does not come out. The construction of these sheds is being strongly opposed by the rice millers all over the state as it would cost a rice mill a minimum of Rs 20 lakh to Rs 30

Annual fair at tombs of Laila-Majnu
Abohar, June 15 Punjabi singers Kanwalpreet Kaur and Sucha Singh Chamkeela virtually stole the show at the “akhara” that was arranged by the managing committee headed by Amreek Singh. Predominantly, a lovers' affair with more than half the congregation being married and unmarried couples, the fair during the past five days attracted thousands of people. However, none from Pakistan could get visa this time. Free kitchen was run during the
fair. Harnek Singh, a member of the organizing committee, said the unmarried entreat the
“legendary lovers” to bless them so that their love blossoms into marriage, while the newly-married ones pray for the longevity of their spouse. People from Pakistan revere these tombs as well and they used to visit Binjore to seek their blessings even after the 1971 Indo-Pak war. The monument reverberates with the tale of the immortal lovers in every brick as well as the heart of lovers all over the country. Though historians deny the existence of
Laila-Majnu, terming them mythical, it is not enough to dampen the spirit of modern
lovers. BSF men, guarding the border in the Anoopgarh area, had named two border outposts
(BoPs) as Laila and Majnu, to honour the lovers of yore. The village Binjore, including the BoPs and barbed wire fencing, had been under knee- deep water as the seasonal Ghaggar river wreaked havoc for two months last year. |
