Moga, June 24
In yet another shocking incident, the police has recovered a mutilated body of a man from the toilet pit of a house. The man was poisoned to death by his son at Sekha Kalan village in the Baghapurana sub-division of Moga district on Sunday.

This is the third incident in a row during the last four days that has come to light in the Moga district in which the father-son relationship has been seen in dark light over property disputes.

The police today dug the pit with the help of a JCB machine in the presence of a local magistrate and recovered a mutilated body of the man, identified as Jugraj Singh, from the toilet pit of his house, who reportedly went missing five months back.

The police took into custody Amandeep Singh, son of Jugraj Singh, and started questioning him about his father's death. A senior official of the police said the son had confessed that he poisoned his father to death about five months back and then threw his body in the toilet/drainage pit.

During the interrogation, it has come to light that Jugraj, who was the owner of five acres of land gave 1.75 acres of land to his daughter Paramjit Kaur, disturbing Amandeep who poisoned his father to death. He gave some poisonous substance by mixing it in the milk, which led to Jugraj's death, the alleged accused has confessed.

The police had registered a criminal case of murder and destroying the evidence of the death against the son and begun further investigations into this shocking incident.

Gang exploiting unmarried middle-aged men busted
Balwant Garg
Tribune News Service

Faridkot, June 24
Society's longstanding preference for sons has had another fall out in this part of Punjab.

Targeting many middle-aged unmarried males, some women with a dubious character in the region have started nurturing their 'stealthy' business with a new modus operandi. These women snare those who face a future as bachelors, with a marriage proposal. Once these singles take the bait, they end up in a trap and are blackmailed.

In one such case, some days back, the Faridkot police arrested two women and their four male accomplices after a woman member of the gang trapped a Faridkot resident in her net with the promise of marriage.

The victim was invited to a rented house to meet his future 'bride'. Once he reached the house, six other gang members swooped on him, tore up his clothes, beat him up and leveled rape charges. The gang members raised a demand for Rs 60,000 but settled on Rs 40,000.

Once police arrested the culprits, it recovered Rs 1.78 lakh in cash, a bank cheque for Rs 3 lakh and some driving licences, which police believed belong to other victims.

Two months back, a farmer in Khara village of Faridkot was robbed of Rs 50,000 by a 'bride' who stayed for nearly a month with him before she fled.

There are many such victims but only some of them approach the police, fearing being mocked at by society, said Dilbag Singh Pannu, SP (D) Faridkot.

Some time back, the police received a complaint about one such case from Mehta village in Faridkot. A bachelor in the family, who married a 'fake bride', was left sulking after the bride disappeared with Rs 50,000 three days after the marriage.

With increasing slant in the sex ratio and the fragmentation of land, many middle-aged bachelors are the target of these women.

With the help of some middlemen, these sex workers trace unmarried middle-aged persons, most of whom are daily wagers, landless or farmers with small land holdings in rural areas.

In some cases, the victims surrender big sums of money, fearing the allegations of rape. In many other cases, the marriages are fixed and also the dowry.

In these 'marriages', it is not the 'brides', who bring dowry, but it is the groom's family. These 'brides' disappear soon after the marriage along with the valuables. And then onwards, neither the bride nor the middlemen are traceable.

Muktsar, June 24
Although Laxmi Kanta Chawla resigned from the post of health and family welfare minister in May last year, the staff at the Civil Hospital Muktsar still seems to consider her as the cabinet minister in the second term of the SAD-BJP government.

As one enters the hospital building, a hoarding put up near the registration counter for patients, having the photographs of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Laxmi Kanta Chawla, mentioning her as the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, greets everyone.

Though the hoarding has been put up to spread awareness among the visitors about the ban imposed by the government on sex determination tests, yet the picture of Madan Mohan Mittal, the present Minister for Health and Family Welfare has not been displayed.

When this correspondent asked a visitor the name of the state's health minister, he said, "Laxmi Kanta Chawla is our health minister as the board suggests." But when informed about the fact, he said the hospital staff must change the boards to check the wrong information from being spread.

The SMO, Dr Harinder Singh, said, "The hoardings were made during the period of Laxmi Kanta Chawla when she was the cabinet minister. As you have brought the matter to my notice, the hoardings will be changed soon."

Praful Chander Nagpal

Fazilka, June 24
The joint check-post (JCP) at Sadqi, situated on the Indo-Pak border, is going to get a facelift on the pattern of Wagah in Amritsar as Punjab government has decided to develop it as a tourist spot. The executive engineers of the Panchayati Raj and Punjab Mandi Board have started work on the project.

The Beating Retreat (flag lowering) ceremony takes place here every evening before sunset. The Border Security Force (BSF) jawans and the Pakistan Rangers carry out a joint parade during the ceremony on the JCP located at the tail-end of National Highway number 10.

The spectacle of the ceremony (especially the aggressive postures of BSF and Pakistan Rangers), attracts hundreds of visitors daily on both sides of the Radcliff line. Nearly 20,000 visitors throng the JCP every year on Independence Day to have a glimpse of their relatives who had segregated at the time of the partition of the country, on either side of the border.

"The inflow of visitors has increased considerably after granting district headquarter status to Fazilka, which has necessitated the need to develop it as a tourist spot," said Fazilka Deputy Commissioner Dr Basant Garg who visited the JCP Sadqi with Deputy Inspector General (DIG), BSF, AK Sharma, Fazilka ADC Charandev Singh Maan and senior officials of other construction related departments to work out the modalities.

"The administration proposes to construct an attractive waiting hall, conference room for VIPs, a tall welcome gate, beautiful parks, toilets and parking for the vehicles in the first phase, the plan for which is being worked out. Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and Forest Minister Surjit Kumar Jyani have assured of providing funds for the purpose," said the DC.

On the other hand, convener of the Indo-Pak-Sulemanki International Trade Front, Liladhar Sharma, has demanded that Punjab Roadways should start a bus from Fazilka to Sadqi at the time of the retreat ceremony for the convenience of the commuters as the poor visitors have to hire their own vehicles to reach there.
