Sanand to assess impact of power projects on river
Haridwar, May 27 Swami Sanand will be accompanied by scientists and environmentalists to gauge the negative impact on the purity of the Ganga as well as on the local ecology. He, along with Swami Shivanand of Matra Sadan, has questioned the integrity of both Centre and state government towards making the Ganga pollution free. “This is a serious finding as the Ganga is no ordinary river. If we confine and stop its constant flow in dams and barrages, the significance of the river will be affected. The Tehri dam has been constructed on the Bhagirathi river but we do not want the same thing to happen on the Alaknanda river and that’s why we are protesting against the hydro projects on the river,” said Swami Sanand. He also called on for the hydro project ban on sub-tributaries of the Ganga, namely Mandakini, Pindar and Vishnu Prayag, and remarked that if the government carried on with its plan for hydro projects, he would give up his life after ‘tapasya’ agitation. Extending support to him, Matra Sadan ashram founder Swami Shivanand said for the past 12 years, they had been working for the cause of the Ganga. He said he would protest if Swami Sanand was stopped by the administration. Demanding the induction of water in concurrent list, Swami Shivanand said, “A river is not a property of a state or country but it’s a world property with animals and birds having same rights as humans; that is why so it is imperative to include it in concurrent list for wider conservation.” Lashing out at Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna for dictating statements on hydro projects, Shivanand termed them as uncalled for, which have been given without taking into consideration the negative impact of hydro projects on the Ganga and local ecology. He said from June 3 to 6, tributes would be paid to Swami Nigmanand. Both the saints also termed the Prime Minister-led National Ganga River Basing Authority recent meetings as unproductive. |

48th death anniversary
Haridwar, May 27 Uday Ram Semwal, central secretary of the UKD, said Nehru was a visionary who led India on the path of development. He added with the Panchsheel principles Nehru gave the world
the message of mutual harmony and cooperation. Semwal said by the Non-Aligned Movement he tried to defuse
tension prevailing in the world during Cold War between the USSR and the USA. He cited various
development measures taken by Nehru post-Independence and said, “Whether it was setting
up of educational institutions like the IIT, IIM, AIIMS and the NIT, paving the way for industrialisation, setting up of dams that he termed as modern shrines or the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan, Nehru always had a development-oriented vision.” Lalit Mamgain, president of the UKD youth
wing, said, “It was not without reason that children and the youth liked Nehru and called him ‘Chacha Nehru’ as he always promoted the
interests of the youth and played a pivotal role in development of the country.” Veteran Gandhian Saukar Singh Rawat from Pauri Garhwal said Nehru
was a statesman who despite a foreign upbringing had a liking for the people and the natural beauty of Uttarakhand. Rawat cited Nehru’s numerous visits to Dehradun, Mussoorie, Almora, Nainital and Pauri Garhwal which he had mentioned in his writings too. He also presented himself as a child of the Himalayas. A special programme was also organised at the Jawaharlal Nehru Youth Centre at Bhagat Singh Chowk where children sang patriotic songs and offered floral tributes to a Nehru’s portrait. |

Forest rights for tribals demanded
Dehradun, May 27 Jarjum Ite was here to attend a public hearing on national park and sanctuaries vis-à-vis the Forest Rights Act organised by the National Forum of Forest People and Forest Workers (NFFPFW) yesterday. She said except Assam and Sikkim, the Forest Rights Act had not been implemented in other northeastern states as the forest authorities argued that forest rights were not meant for the tribals of these states. She added while 145 memorandums of understanding had been signed in Arunachal Pradesh for the construction of dams in the recent years, there had been little efforts so far to get land and forest rights for forest dwelling communities, showing lack of commitment on the part of government towards tribal issues. Another forest rights worker from Uttarakhand PC Tiwari said while the governments in power had always favoured corporate houses, the forest dwelling communities seldom got due importance in the present political set up of the country. He added the forest dwelling communities needed to emerge as a political force. Roma from the NFFPFW, who coordinated the proceedings, said atrocities on tribals and forest dwelling communities still continued in the country. She added a lot still needed to be done to ensure a proper implementation of the Forest Rights Act. —TNS |

Petrol price hike proof of UPA’s wrong policies: Khanduri
Haridwar, May 27 Khanduri was speaking at a felicitation function at the BHEL at Ranipur here today. He lashed out at the Congress for failing to control inflation and corruption which had broken the backbone of the common man. He said the rising inflation, a weak rupee, rise in prices of foodgrains and corruption presented a poor picture of the country. He recounted the achievements of the NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Khanduri termed the unemployment allowance announced by Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna for the jobless youth of Uttarakhand as only a lollypop. “Instead of providing full-time employment and self- employment avenues, the Congress government is focusing on providing an allowance which is a temporary step. The youth of the state want employment for long term not a publicity gimmick,” said Khanduri. The former Chief Minister said the episode of Sitarganj legislator Kiran Mandal leaving the BJP was a proof of negative politics pursued by the Congress. He added the Congress instead of focusing on development was pursuing cheap politics which he never did during his government. Ranipur MLA Aadesh Chauhan assured the party activists that their problems would be listened to and addressed. He urged them to remain in touch with public as the Congress government in the state could fall anytime. Chauhan expressed concern over the rising incidents of crime in the district. |

‘Varsity needed for affiliation of colleges in Garhwal’
Dehradun, May 27 Khanduri wrote that there was an immediate need of proper functioning of Pt Deen Dayal Updhyaya Affiliating University in the interest of the students of the state. He said after HNB Garhwal University, Srinagar, was upgraded to the status of a Central University, the official announcement of the Pt Deen Dayal Updhyaya Affiliating University was made to address the educational need of 1,70,000 students in those colleges that were affiliated to the HNB Garhwal University. However, the state government failed to make the affiliating university functional as the result of which students are facing great difficulties. In HNB university, the entrance examination would be conducted at the national level and the reservations have to be made in accordance with the Central Government policy. The university has adopted semester system and the examination would also be conducted as per the norms applicable for a Central University. He argued that the affiliated colleges do not have essential arrangement for implementing the semester system because these colleges did not have proper infrastructure and many colleges did not have adequate number of teachers. He said the Chief Minister that prevailing situation had resulted in difficulties for the teachers as well as the students. This often lead to agitation by the students. Khanduri appealed to Bahuguna that Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya University should be started immediately by providing required infrastructure facilities and the appointment of a Vice-Chancellor, registrar and other required staff. He said the affiliating university should be made functional immediately, so that the admission process could be started in the colleges in accordance with the norms of the state for the coming academic session from July. |
