Bylanes turn death zones
Jammu, May 22 The illegal and haphazard parking of taxis and Tempos on these by-lanes and interior roads, and loaded trucks on the highway, has not only become a permanent nuisance for residents but also a major source of frequent road mishaps. All departments concerned, including the Jammu Municipal Corporation, the Jammu Development Authority and the Traffic Police, have resorted to “blame game” and have failed to take corrective measures despite repeated requests by residents. “The entire area has become unsafe for driving. Motor agencies and workshops set up by various car and two-wheeler companies are the real culprits, as these encourage illegal and haphazard parking of trucks, taxis and Tempos. Though a large number of fatal road accidents have already taken place on the stretch, the authorities are maintaining a cryptic silence over the problem,” said Arshad Khan, a senior squash player and a resident of Channi. He alleged that the police (traffic as well as civil) had turned a blind to the prevailing chaos. “Accidents are commonplace on the road because it becomes difficult to judge the movement of vehicles on the highway due to illegal parking of trucks and Tempos on the interior roads, which blocks the view of the drivers,” Khan said. When The Tribune visited the area, heavy trucks laden with goods and commercial carriers were found parked illegally on the highway, as drivers of vehicles coming from the Channi side found it hard to judge the movement of speeding vehicles on the highway. “Public places are being used for illegal parking and the practice is being encouraged by workshop owners. I had a narrow escape a few days ago, when I failed to notice a speeding car coming from the wrong side due to blockade caused by parked trucks and Tempos. The authorities will initiate measures only after a big tragedy happens,” said Rajesh Gupta, a resident of Channi Rama locality. A senior officer of the municipal corporation said it was the duty of the JDA to look after the parking slots in the city. Sarita Chouhan, vice-chairman, JDA, said: “Our job is confined to residential colonies. We clear the permission for any commercial complex only if it has adequate parking space. We can deal sternly with the violators if they encourage illegal parking in residential localities.” Jammu SSP (Traffic) Manmohan Singh tried to downplay the problem saying truck drivers parked their vehicles only when their entry to the city was restricted. He, however, said he would look into the matter. Blame game

Grit, hard work saw them through
Jammu, May 22 Manjula Verma, the BCA topper from Government College for Women, Parade, worked hard under dire circumstances. Her father passed away just before her examinations. Instead of succumbing to grief, Manjula showed great will and perseverance to not just make a mark in BCA results but also rank as the topper with 81.21 per cent amongst all students from other colleges. “It was difficult taking these examinations in the face of personal loss but I did it for my father who I am sure would have been very proud of me today. My family is happy with my result. I plan to pursue MCA from Jammu University,” said Manjula on her result. Pooja Thapar, another BCA position-holder from the Parade college, attributed her success to the support of her family, teachers and regular studies, which helped her deal with preparation for examinations without taking undue stress. “My concepts were clear and I was very particular about my timely revision. The experience of previous examination helped crack the final examinations successfully,” said Pooja, who plans to pursue MCA at Jammu University. Sarabjeet Kaur, another student from the college, came third with 79 per cent marks in BCA. “I was regular with classes and self-study was the mantra for my preparation. Jagti settlers court arrest
Jammu, May 22 Hundreds of Kashmiri Pandits held a demonstration and courted arrest at the Nagrota police station. They remained at the police station for around two hours before being released in the afternoon. “We have no other way to protest against the government. We have held many peaceful protests but nobody has mitigated our suffering. We have been facing 18-hour power cuts for the past two months, but nobody has taken cognizance of our problem,” said Shadi Lal Pandita, a resident of the township. “It amounts to human rights violation. They are not providing us with electricity even during peak summer. We are members of a displaced community and deserve basic amenities,” he added. The settlers said the Prime Minister, in his package for the Kashmiri Pandits, had announced that the government would provide all basic facilities free of cost to the settlers till the time they were rehabilitated in their homeland. The government had now betrayed them, they added. “We cannot pay the bills till the government makes our return possible. We are not living here out of choice. We are living in exile. Instead of providing us with basic facilities, the government is subjecting us to torture,” claimed Avtar Krishan Raina, another settler. The protesters demanded permanent rehabilitation of the Kashmiri Pandits and adequate compensation for the losses suffered by them in the past 22 years. |

SDP demands change in govt office timing
Jammu, May 22 Addressing mediapersons here, she said the decision to change the morning timing for schools and other educational institutions was welcome, but the change of office timing had created problems for people. “Those who come from the rural areas cannot reach the city before 12 pm. If the government fixes the timing from 10 am to 5 pm, those coming from far-flung areas can access the offices and get their works done on time,” said Dr Andrabi. “In other regions of the country, the standard office timings remain the same, but in Jammu, things are different,” she added. “Even for a small piece of work at government offices, people from far-flung areas have to stay back overnight at city headquarters so that they can meet the officials concerned on time. This decision to change the timing is unaccepted in a democratic setup,” she maintained. She appealed to the Chief Minister to revise the office timing and adhere to a standard office time schedule, as maintained in other parts of the country. “The common people cannot be subjected to inconvenience for the comfort of government employees,” said Dr Andrabi. |

150-year-old tree axed
Jammu, May 22 The 150-year-old tree was the landmark of the cremation ground and used to provide shade to the people visiting the place to cremate their dead ones. A number of religious and social organisations have condemned the act of the samiti members and have blamed them for hurting the sentiments of the Hindu community. Members of the Rashtrawadi Shiv Sena today held a protest at the cremation ground and demanded action against those responsible for the felling of the tree. “It is a shameful act, which has hurt the sentiments of the people. The tree was more than 100 years old. Instead of protecting the tree, they chose to destroy it,” said Kuldeep Kumar, a senior member of the party. The party members claimed that when they raised the issue with the Sewa Samiti, the latter claimed that it was necessary to do so in order to build a shed at that place. “A shelter or shed could have been built at any other place. It seems the wood has been sold for personal gains,” alleged Ajit Choudhary, a local resident. In spite of repeated attempts, the Sewa Samiti members refused to come forward to comment on the issue. "We will take up the issue with the authorities concerned, as it affects the religious sentiments of people,” said Amrit Sharma, another local resident. The Jogi Gate ground is one of the biggest cremation grounds in the city and dozens of cremations take place at the site every day. In the past, there have been allegations against the samiti members of not utilising the funds and donations to upgrade the place. Even the electric crematorium installed at the site about two decades ago had not been functioning for the past many years. |
