Amritsar, April 14
Local industrialists and traders apprised Industry Minister Anil Joshi about their problems and demands.

Small Scale Industry Board Director Raman Gupta said the Small Scale Industry (SSI) units need support to pass through the tough competition posed by national and international firms. He said 1.20 lakh registered SSI units in Punjab have declined in the past five years.

He felt that the government must extend support to the industry in areas like R&D, marketing and infrastructure. Each industry has to deal with various government departments and agencies. However, lack of coordination and communication among these departments cause delay in addressing the issues related to growth of the industry.

He said an answer to the problem lay in the Punjab Industrial Facilitation Act, which was enacted many years ago, but its practical implementation remains a far fetched dream.

As per the recently approved Master Plan, also known as local planning area, all industrial units have been told to shift to a designated area within ten years.

For this, three areas have been earmarked. One at Bal Kalan on Majitha Road, second at Tarn Taran Road and third at Mehta Road. However, there is no attempt to provide infrastructure.

The instance of Bal Kalan should serve as an eye opener where many industrial units have sprung up without being provided with roads or sewerage. The industrialists are definitely annoyed with the situation.

Regular power supply and subsidised loan are two major things required to make SSIs capable to compete in the national and international markets.

Textile Manufacturers Association secretary HS Makhni urged the minister to streamline the industry department.

He said the government must extend subsidy to the SSI units in the city. He sought introduction of Single Window System to get all formalities done from various government agencies.

Makhni sought setting up of a permanent exhibition ground on the line of Pragati Maidan here where more and more trade exhibitions, including the international level, could be organised.

The industry minister assured that the problems and demands would be gradually taken up.
