Kapurthala Jail sets up grocery store

Kapurthala, April 9
The Kapurthala Modern Jail authorities have set up a grocery shop on the jail premises near the visitor’s room. The authorities are also planning not to allow food items from outside in the jail from next month.

The step, sources say, has been taken following huge influx of visitors ever since former minister Bibi Jagir Kaur has been lodged in the Modern Jail here.

The shop has fruits, seasonal vegetables, cooking oil pouches and a variety of uncooked consumables in store which can be bought and gifted to inmates from there and then. The good part is that the items kept for sale are available at market price, thus saving the visitors of carrying items along from far off places and even undergoing security checks at two points.

Jail Superintendent SP Khanna said: “The search of packed home-cooked food item is considered distasteful not just by visitors but even by the staff. The cooked vegetable or pulses that they get along has to be checked by turning it around with a spoon or a spatula which no one likes. This cannot be avoided since there is every chance of drugs being supplied to inmates with packed food. The food items in the grocery store would be displayed only after a thorough search.”

Khanna added that the inmates who have been doing labour by making chairs and paper bags and earning Rs 2,000 a month would also be able to purchase fruits or any other item desired by them at any given point of time from the shop. He said that the scheme had been introduced as a part of goodwill gesture.

PUDA asks Reliance Group to pay Rs 3.5 crore

Jalandhar, April 10
The sanction of construction plans for the much-publicised multiplex site of the Reliance Group, which was sold for a whopping Rs 107 crore in 2007, has been held up by PUDA as the company has not paid Rs 3.5 crore as non-construction charges.

The site measuring 2.94 acres is on Garha Road in front of the Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences. PUDA bylaws stipulate that an allottee has to construct a building within three years of its sale, following which 2 per cent of the sale amount is levied each year as extension charges.

Since it is the fifth year running since the plot was taken by the group in the open auction, the company will have to pay the amount prior to sanction of its plan. Fencing of the site, which is near Cambridge International School in Chhoti Baradari, Phase II, was being done after its sale, but the mega project somehow got delayed.

Insiders reveal that the group sent an application for the plan approval a few months ago following which it was asked to clear the dues.

Additional Chief Administrator of the Jalandhar Development Authority (JDA) SK Singla, however, feigned ignorance. Estate Officer Ganesh Kumar said the dues would be sought before giving approval.

Allotment of plaots likely to be cancelled

PUDA is likely to cancel the allotment of two residential plots in Chhoti Baradari, Phase-I, auction for which was held last week. The allotment has been cancelled as the two allottees for house numbers 5 and 7 failed to pay 10 per cent of the amount which was to be deposited on the day of auction.

Estate Officer Ganesh Kumar said the amount was received on the third day after the auction, but the rules state that in such a case, the allotment stands cancelled. “We have referred the matter to the head office.”

The plot numbers 5 and 7 had been declared in the name of highest bidders for Rs 2,86,74,800 and Rs 2,92,60,000, respectively.

Jalandhar, April 10
A mock drill was conducted at the Indane bottling plant of the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) at Suchi Pind here today to check the preparedness of disaster management agencies and the district administration in case of gas leak.

The drill was conducted by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The first-ever mock drill at the bottling plant saw vigilant teams of the 7th and 8th battalions of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) from Bathinda and Ghaziabad, respectively, in association with the Civil Hospital authorities, the fire brigade, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and volunteers of NGO Pahal gearing up themselves for an eventuality.

A situation was given where one out of the seven ‘horten spare’ LPG storage plants developed a snag leading to gas leak. As soon as the alarm rang, the plant was shut down, power was tripped and all LPG valves were closed while Indane employees along with the NDRF teams were seen rushing to control the situation.

Even before the employees of the plant could inform the district administration, they had put on the water sprinkler systems of the ‘horten spares’ so as to initially control the damage and avoid any major loss. Two fire tenders were also called to avoid any major loss.

Since, the Indane bottling plant is surrounded by educational institutions, residences and small-scale industries, timely action was needed.

Talking to Jalandhar Tribune, Brigadier (Dr) BK Khanna (retd), Senior Specialist (Training & Capacity Development) from the NDMA said they had conducted 450 mock drills at different establishments in the country out of which 127 were held in industries.

“It is important to hold such mock drills and keep the administration and the entire paraphernalia ready in case of eventuality. The aim is to help prepare various agencies and at the same time, save human lives and control the loss at the earliest,” he added.

A total of 40 persons were shown injured in the drill and they were immediately given medial aid by a team of doctors from the Civil Hospital and those serious were rushed to the hospital in 108 ambulance service.

The Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) team of the 8th Battalion of the NDRF also put up a separate washing and bathing set up to provide cleaning facilities for employees who faced the leakage for a long time.

The lapses

  • The 108 ambulance reached late at the venue
  • NDRF team members faced a funny situation when they failed to install a hosepipe to a temporary water connection
  • At another situation, one of the NDRF team members was left in a tizzy as it almost became a Herculean task for him to remove his shoe
  • Some of the employees of the Indane bottling plant were seen walking slowly instead of rushing during the mock drill
