Daredevils beat super kings New Delhi, April 10 Daredevils thus bounced back after losing to Royal Challengers Bangalore to record their second victory while CSK suffered their second defeat. It was Delhi's second eight-wicket victory to show that they have the depth and talent to go up the ladder in the league. And the man who bowled them to an unassailable position, Morne Morkel, was named the Man of the Match. The heavy showers soaked the ground so much that despite an army of groundsmen and super-soppers working frantically to suck up the wetness from the ground, the match was delayed by 30 minutes. And Delhi Daredevils captain Virender Sehwag made the most of the conditions from the very first ball, to eventually restrict the visitors to 110 for 8 in 20 overs. Daredevils replied with 111 for 2 in 13.2 overs to home in comfortably after Naman Ojha and Virender Sehwag provided a blazing start to put on 32 runs off 3.4 overs. Ojha whipped Albie Morkel twice past the leg side, and once over the second slip, to hit three successive fours off the very first over, though he was a run-out victim to Du Plessis when he was shaping up well, to be out for 15 from 12 balls. Sehwag’s presence at the crease kept the packed stands in a thrall, as he maintained the momentum after gliding Bollinger to the ropes off the first ball of the second over to open his account. He stayed put to make 33 off 21 balls with four boundaries and one six, before making his exit quickly, as is his wont, leaving the unfinished task of anchoring Delhi Daredevils to victory to their two star players —Kevin Pierterson and Mahela Jayawardene — who remained unbeaten on 43 and 20 respectively. CSK did no credit to their reputation as their poor judgement of runs and poor running between the wickets resulted in four run-outs, and South African pace spearhead Morne Morkel’s searing spell (2/19) claimed the crucial wickets of Du Plessis, when he was getting on top of the Delhi bowlers, and captain Mahender Singh Dhoni, while Van Der Merwe gave out an exceptionally restrictive bowling display, conceding 15 runs off 4 overs. But it was the left-arm spin of Shahbad Nadeem that was a revelation as the Jharkhand spinner, who has played with Dhoni a lot of junior cricket, gave just 9 runs away in three overs. The turning point was when Morkel forced du Plessis to play in to the hands of Merwe after he put Irfan to the sword in his second over. And then got rid of Dhoni, who faced 18 balls to make 11, before holing out to Mahela Jayawardene. Ravinder Jadeja and Bravo looked like making a match of it, but the Delhi bowlers were in their elements to keep CSK down and out. Knights rise up to the challenge
Bangalore, April 10 Sent into bat, the Knight riders posted a challenging 165 for eight in their stipulated 20 overs, thanks to some brilliant batting by skipper Gautam Gambhir, who struck a strokeful 64 in just 39 balls. Balaji then scalped four wickets giving away just 18 runs and Jacques Kallis accounted for two more as the visitors returned to restrict the Challengers to 123 for nine at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. With this victory, Kolkata snapped their two-match losing streak in the fifth IPL, where they had lost to Delhi Daredevils and Rajasthan Royals in their last two encounters respectively. The Royals Challengers had a disastrous start to their runchase, losing four of their top batsman for just 25 runs with pacers Kallis and Balaji claiming two wickets each. Kallis started the proceeding in the second over, sending back opener Cheteshwar Pujara (6) who was caught at slip while tring to steer the ball towards third man. The South African allrounder then scalped the prized wicket of Chris Gayle (2) in his next over. Trying to pull a short delivery from Kallis over midwicket, Gayle ended up top-edging the ball to Laxmi Shukla at mid-on. Balaji then got ino the act and dismissed Virat Kohli (6) in the sixth over to leave the hosts tottering at 20 for three. Kohli miscued a short and ended up giving a catch to Manoj Tiwari at point. Nine balls later, the Tamil Nadu pacer cleaned up AB de Villiers (10) and then dismissed Mayank Agarwal (5) in his next over as RCB were looked down the barrel at 33 for five. Skipper Daniel vettori (20) then joined Sourabh Tiwary (18) but the New Zealander also couldn't stay longer and was sent packing by Balaji in the 12th over. Balaji disturbed Vettori's off-stump with a slow length delivery to claim his fourth victim. Ryan ten Doeschate of The Netherland then claimed the wicket of Sourabh in the 15th over. R Vinay Kumar (25 not out), HV Patel (10) and Zaheer Khan (not out 11) then tried their bit but it was too little in the end. Earlier, captain Gambhir led from the front as he anchored KKR to their highest total of the tournament in the match which was delayed by 20 minutes due to short circuit at the advertisement hoardings at the ground. Gambhir blasted nine fours and one six during his innings. He shared 60 runs for the opening wicket with Kallis (22) before adding another 65-run stand for the second wicket with Manvinder Bisla (46 off 29 balls; 2x4; 3x6). — PTI Scoreboard Kolkata Knight Riders Kallis c de Villiers b Vettori 22 Gambhir c Harshal b Zaheer 64 Bisla st de Villiers b Murali 46 Yusuf c Gayle b Vinay 1 Tiwary c Agarwal b Zaheer 2 Doeschate c Vettori b Murali 3 Shakib c Pujara b Vinay 4 Shukla c Zaheer b Harshal 5 Lee not out 8 Bhatia not out 4 Extras (lb-4, w-2) 6 Total (8 wkts, 20 ovrs) 165 Fall of wickets: 1-60, 2-125, 3-126, 4-139, 5-140, 6-143, 7-151, 8-154. Visakhapatnam, April 10 Earlier, Munaf Patel grabbed four wickets as Mumbai Indians restricted Deccan Chargers for 138 for nine. Patel bowled his usual accurate and wicket-to-wicket line which fetched him four wickets for 20 runs as Deccan failed to build sustained momentum. Munaf got able support from Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga who bagged three wickets. The match was, however, marred by controversy with Mumbai captain Harbhajan Singh having a heated and prolonged argument with the field umpires who committed a mistake in not giving Kumar Sangakkara out. The incident happened in the 13th over of Deccan Chargers’ innings with Sangakkara bowled off the bowling of Munaf though the umpires thought otherwise initially. Sangakkara dragged the ball onto the stumps with the bails dislodged and the ball hit wickets again after ricocheting from wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik. The field umpires eventually referred the decision to the third umpire who gave Sangakkara out as expected. — PTI Scoreboard Deccan Chargers Parthiv c Rohit b Munaf 1 Dhawan c Pollard b Malinga 41 Chipli c Malinga b Munaf 1 Christian c Pollard b Munaf 39 S’kara b Munaf 14 White not out 30 Ravi Teja b Malinga 4 Mishra c Munaf b Malinga 0 Steyn b Pollard 2 Ankit c Rayudu b Pollard 1 Extras (b-1, w-4) 5 Total (9 wkts, 20 ovrs) 138 Fall of wickets: 1-7, 2-9, 3-46, 4-82, 5-123, 6-127, 7-127, 8-136, 9-138. Mumbai, April 10 The Harbhajan Singh-led side, without the calming influence of the injured Sachin Tendulkar at the top of the order, once again seemed to be floundering while chasing a none-too-difficult target of 139 before the under-performing Rohit did the last-over magic when the side needed 18 runs. Rohit's whirlwind unbeaten knock and good support from West Indian Kieron Pollard saved the day for MI after their bowlers had done a commendable job in restricting their rivals to a manageable total. The bowlers, led from the front by Harbhajan Singh, have delivered in all three matches they have played and it's time for the openers to give the side a good start in the absence of Tendulkar whose finger injury is yet to heal completely. The senior batsman is uncertain to play tomorrow's game and in his absence MI have tried out Hyderabad-born Ambati Rayudu and T Suman as partners to South African Richard Levi without much success. Levi, who cracked a half-century and won the MoM award in the opener against CSK, too has flopped in the last two games and Mumbai would be anxious to get the opening combination right for the game against the Royals. The bowlers have delivered in brilliant style for Mumbai with Munaf Patel in particularly good form in the last two games he has played – grabbing 2 for 26 against Pune Warriors and then a stunning 4 for 20 against Deccan Chargers. Lasith Malinga has always been a threat for the rival batsmen and was well used by Harbhajan against Chargers. A battle within the battle could be the one-on-one contest between Trinidadian all-rounders Pollard and Kevon Copper. — PTI |
Munaf fined for agruing
Visakhapatnam, April 10 Deccan captain Kumar Sangakkara was clearly out off the bowling of Munaf in Monday's match with the ball hitting the off-stump but the field umpires thought it happened after ricocheting from Mumbai wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik. An angry-looking Harbhajan and Munaf came rushing in and apparently asked the umpires why they did not refer the matter to the third umpire if they were not sure of the decision. The umpires eventually made a referral to the third umpire who ruled Sangakkara out. "Mumbai Indians player Munaf Patel was fined 25 per cent of his match fee and received an official warning and reprimand for breaching the DLF Indian Premier League Code of Conduct during his team's match against Deccan Chargers in Vishakhapatnam on Monday night," IPL said in a release. —
