I-T raid on DAV Director’s house
Jalandhar, April 3 The raiding party, accompanied by the police, is said to have reached the residence of Kocher at Durga Colony early this morning and continued to be at his place till evening. The team also raided the house of a property dealer residing in Kalia Colony who had reportedly helped the DAV management purchase the site for DAV University on the Jalandhar-Pathankot road. It is learnt that nearly 15 villagers, who had offered land to the DAV management for the construction of the university, had received notices seeking details of the land deal. The Income Tax Department is perhaps acting on a complaint on the matter as per which Kocher and the property agent had allegedly evaded tax during the said transaction. Kocher, when contacted, said he had heard about the raids, but he was in Delhi. Asked if the authorities were sceptical about the university land deal, he denied saying, “There is no such issue at all.” Puri, however, was at his residence and said the raid was still on and he could not divulge anything regarding the same. Income tax raids were also held at a property dealer and a commission agent at Shahkot today. |
PUDA auction evokes good response
Jalandhar, April 3 The three residential plots in Chhoti Baradari, Phase-I, measuring 418 sq m each, for which the reserve price was fixed at Rs 36,970 per sq m each, went for almost double the amount. The house number 7, considered to be a lucky number, was sold for Rs 70,000 per sq m with the total value of the property at Rs 2.926 crore. The property was brought by Gurcharan Singh. Rohit Jain purchased house number 5 for Rs 68,600 per sq m, while Amrit Singla took the house number 6 for Rs 69,500 per sq m. The three properties, which could not be sold earlier due to an encroachment by a durgah at the site, has fetched the PUDA a whopping income of Rs 8,69,85,800. All the three properties fall in the lane where cricketer Harbhajan Singh owns a house (No 1). House number 6 in Chhoti Baradari, Phase-II, however, could not bring in much revenue owing to its location issue. The house number 6, measuring 434.72 sq m, for which auction was held at the same reserve price, went for Rs 47,000 per sq m only. The auction for five commercial booths, planned as convenience shops in Chhoti Baradari, Phase-I, in its rear area near Atwal House, did not yield any response. Those present at the auction said the location of the booths was to be blamed as the site should have ideally been chosen in the middle of the colony. The team of PUDA officials, headed by Additional Chief Administrator SK Singla, were quite excited after having received a good response. |
City girl gets 7th rank in Indian Forest Services examination
Jalandhar, April 3 Hairatjit Kaur, who is presently pursuing her junior research fellowship (JRF) in wood anatomy at the Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun, cleared the IFS exam in her third attempt and without any coaching. It was self-study and a focused approach, which brought her success. Hairatjit Kaur did her schooling from the local St Joseph Convent School, BSc from the local Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya (HMV) and her MSc (Botany) from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana. Talking to Jalandhar Tribune, Hairatjit said as many as 250 students had appeared for the interview at the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), New Delhi, out of which only 85 were selected. She is grateful to her brother Gauravjit Singh, a lecturer in English in a college, for honing her interview skills. “It was my third attempt and I was sure of my selection this year as the previous two attempts guided me forth. While in the first attempt I managed to clear the written exam, in the second attempt I was not even able to clear the written test. However, this time my interview went off extremely well and I got selected,” she added. Hairatjit would now go for training to the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, Dehradun, which would be followed by a professional training later. “I had been keen for a career in forest services since my graduation and opted for science subjects to fulfil my aim. In fact, it does not matter whether one goes for coaching or not, what makes the difference is that one should learn about their potential so as to achieve targets,” she said. Her father, Baljit Singh, a Programme Executive at Doordarshan Kendra, Chandigarh, said though they wanted Hairatjit to become an IAS officer, but following her keen interest in forest studies, she went ahead in her chosen field. “Now we are waiting for her return from Dehradun to celebrate her achievement. Our daughter has made the state, her city and parents proud,” he said. |

DBA polls: Advocates have party time
Jalandhar, April 3 Following the old precedents, the contenders for the post of secretary - Anuj Mehta and Sandeep Singh Sangha - have been hosting lunches, while those vying for the post of president - Gurnam Singh Pelia and Mandeep Singh Sachdev - have been hosting dinner-cum-booze parties in two city hotels for the past two days. While Mehta and Sangha are the first timers, Pelia has been the DBA president twice - first time in 2001-02 and again in 2004-05. Mandeep Singh Sachdev has earlier been secretary in 2006-07. Elections tomorrow will also be held for the post of joint secretary for which Aakash Gupta and Rakesh Trikha are the candidates. Interestingly, there are no clear-cut groups for DBA elections and the candidates are contesting elections as independents. There are 1,616 members of the DBA, which include nearly 250 women lawyers. Political leaders, including Congress MP Mahinder Singh Kaypee and BJP MLA Manoranjan Kalia, too, are members of the association. While polling will begin tomorrow at 8 am, it will end at 4 pm. The results are expected by 6 pm tomorrow. The main demand of the lawyers is construction of new chambers after demolition of the existing ones with proper provisions for parking. The chambers till date have come on the PUDA land after construction of the same by the lawyers individually at their own ends. While some have temporary open structures, there are others which have the best amenities. The lawyers are currently not paying any rent to the authorities. Every year as freshers join in, new 20-30 chambers are raised, leading to haphazard construction all around. The lawyers have also been raising the issue of drainage problem. “It is a complete mess in this area every monsoons. There is no system by way of which the rainwater gets discharged,” they have been demanding. This time not many hoardings have been erected as only a few could be seen on the last day today. The reason: The code of conduct and its strict adherence. |
Policy to provide better job opportunities to rural youth studying in ITIs soon: Joshi
Jalandhar, April 3 This was stated by Anil Joshi, Punjab Minister for Technical Education, Industry and Commerce, during the valedictory ceremony of the state-level inter-polytechnic sports meet here today. Joshi highlighted the lack of coordination between the industry and the academicians of the polytechnics and ITIs, which was the major reason behind students failing to get good jobs. “We would be formulating a policy in this regard soon so that the rural youth is able to get desired job opportunities in the industry of Punjab,” he added. Further answering a query pertaining to upgrading the infrastructure of the polytechnics and ITIs, the minister said, “Within six months, all the polytechnics and the ITIs would be given funds accordingly for the upgrade of infrastructure as the aim is to cater to the needs of the youth from the villages, who were forced to look for other menial job options in the absence of proper planning,” he added. The minister said since the SAD-BJP government had made a comeback, he was in the process to review the previous policies regarding the technical education in the state. “The previous schemes for the uplift of polytechnics and ITIs would continue, while new ones would be implemented within six months,” he maintained. |
