Over 6.19 lakh vacant houses in state; Gurgaon tops with 18.7%
Chandigarh, April 3 In fact, there has been considerable increase in the total number of vacant houses, 6.19 lakh in 2011 as against 3.22 lakh in 2001 and 2.58 lakh in 1991. Of the vacant houses in the state, 11.2 per cent houses were in urban areas while only 7.3 per cent were in rural areas. While there were 35.97 lakh occupied houses in 1991 and 47.83 lakh in 2001, the number shot up to 64.68 lakh in 2011. According to the 2011 Census, the state had a total 70.88 lakh houses, 44.44 lakh rural houses and 26.43 lakh urban houses. Gurgaon led with 18.7 per cent of the vacant houses followed by Jhajjar (11.1 per cent), Panchkula (10.8 per cent) and Mahendragarh (10.5 per cent). Mewat (5.1 per cent), Sirsa (5.9 per cent), Fatehabad (5.9 per cent) and Karnal (6.7 per cent) were the districts having lesser number of vacant houses. “Most investors in urbanised cities such as Gurgaon did not rent their property for fear of losing to unscrupulous tenants and anti-social elements. Moreover, less occupancy rate in mushrooming apartment complexes also contributed to the large number of vacant houses in major cities and villages in the vicinity of the urban areas,” says DK Bansal, a promoter with a major real estate company. On the other hand, a large number of vacant houses
in the rural areas is the result of migration of the rural population to the urban areas. A majority of those migrating to urban areas prefer to keep their property in rural areas vacant in a bid to remain connected to their roots, a senior official added. Misusing residential property with impunity
In Haryana, 27.2 per cent (17.61 lakh) of total occupied houses are misused for non-residential purposes while the rest are used for either residential and residence-cum-other purposes. While 28.2 per cent of the total rural houses are being used for non-residential puposes, 25.6 per cent of the urban houses are used for residential purposes. |

Hope turns into despair for AIDS victim
Karnal, April 3 During inaugurations and foundation-stone laying ceremonies he stood as a mute spectator throughout the day with a dim hope of some help but it faded as the functions were over and even the ‘largest’ Red Ribbon show could not sensitise the people to come to his rescue. In spite of strenuous efforts, Om Prakash could not meet Dr Narveer Singh, project director, Haryana State AIDS Control Society, as no one had time and patience to listen to him. “I was told that Dr Narveer Singh was here for the state-level function on AIDS but I could not meet him,” said Om Prakash. Om Prakash is one of the worst victims of AIDS having lost three of his children to the dreaded disease and is struggling to save his fourth child. Neither the Red Cross nor the AIDS Society has given any financial help to him and the only help given to him was that the district administration opened a bank account in his name and issued an advertisement, appealing to the people to contribute in the account. A leading NGO NIFAA offered him to provide a ‘fruit rehri’ for earning livelihood but his failing health and frequent visits to Delhi for his son’s treatment are some of the constraints, which are practically impossible for him to overcome. |
