BID to measure pollution in Ghaggar
Three water samples taken

Sirsa, March 23
After reports of pollution of the Ghaggar by industrial waste and sewage, the pollution control department has taken samples of the river water.

A joint team of engineers of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the state pollution control boards (SPCBs) of Punjab and Haryana took samples of the Ghaggar water at three places yesterday.

The Tribune had recently raised the issue of pollution of the Ghaggar by industrial wastes in Haryana and upstream in Punjab.

Dinesh Kumar, Regional Officer of the HSPCB, said: “The pollution levels in all inter-state rivers are monitored by the CPCB and samples are taken by its engineers jointly with the SPCBs concerned at regular intervals.

A joint team of engineers of the CPCB, the HSPCB and the Punjab State Pollution Control Board (PSPCB) took samples of Ghaggar water at Chandpura in Fatehabad, where the Ghaggar enters Haryana from neighbouring Punjab. Later, the team took water samples near Khairekan on the Sirsa-Dabwali road and the Ottu weir near Rania in Sirsa.

The samples have been sent to the laboratory for testing the pollution level of water.

Samples of water taken in Sirsa and upstream at Chandpura in Fatehabad in the past have revealed that the bio-chemical oxygen demand (BOD) level in the Ghaggar here is 25 to 30 mg per litre in this part against the maximum permissible limits of 3 mg per litre.

Biochemical oxygen demand is a measure of the quantity of oxygen used by microorganisms in the oxidation of organic matter.

Oxygen consumed in the decomposition process robs other aquatic organisms of the oxygen they need to live.

A low BOD level means little pollution.
