Chandigarh would continue to be favourite with boozers, as according to the proposed Excise Policy 2012-2013 of the UT, liquor in the city will remain cheaper than that sold in Mohali.

2 booked for hacking kin’s facebook account

The UT police has booked two residents of Karnal for hacking the facebook account of a person and posting obscene comments and pictures on it.

Leopard tranquilised
Chandigarh, March 23
The Air Force had to postpone take-offs for almost an hour as the forest officials last night rescued the leopard that had been trapped in a pipeline under the airstrip for 11 days. To make sure that tranquilisers were administered to the leopard without any hitch, it was decided that no aircraft would take off during the rescue operation.

Syndicate meeting to be stormy

After a series of amicable meetings, Saturday Syndicate is expected to be stormy, especially, for the Vice-Chancellor (VC) who seems to have run into trouble with the Chatrath Group over with the faculty change issue after their letter to VC, 11 senators of the GK Chatrath group have approached Chancellor Hamid Ansari accusing the Vice-Chancellor, RC Sobti, of disrupting the democratic set up of the PU Senate.

Navratra Fair: 80,000 throng Mansa Devi Temple

Woman killed in accident
Mohali, March 23
A woman was killed while two others were injured when the car they were travelling in fell into a ditch after colliding with another vehicle here today.

Allottees seek disclosure of inquiry report

Using the RTI as a tool to delay the inquiry proceedings in the infamous booth allotment scam, 65 allottees, instead of filing their reply to the notices issued by the UT administration, have filed RTI applications seeking disclosure of the present status of the probe.

Admn renews rent lease of 16 showrooms
Chandigarh, March 23
Government shops that have been leased out at Sector 17-E in Chandigarh. After the Chandigarh Administration shelved its proposal to auction prime commercial property in Sector 17, the UT Estate Office has extended the rent lease of its 16 showrooms in Sector 17-E for another five years at a nominal amount of Rs 54,000 per month.

Undertrial threatens hospital staff
Chandigarh, March 23
The admission of under-trials or convicts to the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital has proved to be a bane of the hospital staff. An under-trial, who is facing charges of attempt to murder and was admitted to the hospital a few weeks ago, kept the staff on tenterhooks on Thursday. He allegedly threatened them after the doctors asked the staff to discharge him.

Civic body honours widows of martyrs
Chandigarh, March 23
The awardees with city Mayor Raj Bala Malik on the martyrdom day of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev at Terraced Garden in Sector 33, Chandigarh, on Friday. Fourteen widows of martyrs were honoured by the municipal corporation today. Mayor Raj Bala Malik laid a wreath at the Martyr’s Pillar in Terraced Garden, Sector 33, Chandigarh, and paid homage to Shaheed-e-Azam S Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev and the martyrs from the defence forces.

Man hit by truck, dies
Banur, March 23
A person died after he was hit by a truck near Banur this morning. The deceased, identified as Bheerbhushan Malhotra, a resident of Gopal Nagar, Jagadhari, was crossing the Banur-Rajpura highway when the accident occurred. He was admitted to a hospital. The police has sent the body for an autopsy and a case has been registered.

Developers booked
Zirakpur, March 23
The police today booked colonisers of Astha Royal Homes on the charges of obstructing the natural flow of a seasonal choe in Baltana near Sector 19, Panchkula, on the complaint of Om Parkash, assistant engineer, drainage department, Patiala division. The accused have been identified as Pawan Bansal, Sanjeev Garg and other unknown persons.

Man killed in accident
Chandigarh, March 23
In another hit-and-run accident today, a 45-year-old man riding a Honda Activa scooter was killed at the Sector 36/37 intersection last night. The victim, Dinesh Kumar, a Mohali resident, was an employee at the Mountview Hotel and was returning home when the mishap occurred. He worked at the hotel as a waiter and was returning home after completing his shift. The driver of the car fled from the spot and its partial number was noted down as CH03, making it a blind case.
