Gurtej, an MBA degree holder, had earlier worked in a college at a ‘meagre’ salary of Rs 8,500 per month. “After that, I moved to Delhi and worked in a retail outlet of a multinational cloth brand. Later, I applied for the government job and got first position in the written and physical examinations,” said Gurtej, who is now getting Rs 24,000 a month. When asked if he is satisfied with his job, Gurtej said, “Though it is quite hectic as we have to stand in the scorching heat amidst the pollution, I am quite satisfied considering the salary and future that the job holds for me.” Others having similar degrees are Sukhpreet-BTech, Joginder-BSc (IT), Jasvir (MA-Political Science) and Jagdeep-BCA. Man’s vision restored after major surgery
Bathinda, March 21
However, after about two months, he started regaining sight in his left eye as he had undergone two surgeries in over a month at the Grover Hospital here. The surgeries were performed by a retina specialist, Dr Shveta Grover, on January 8 and February 18. Dr Shveta Grover introduced the patient, Hari Singh, a 32-year-old man from Nehrana village in Hanumangarh district of Rajasthan, who had suffered the serious eye injury when he was carding the cotton with the machine in his village on January 8 last. Hari Singh was also able to read some words from a distance today and attributed the return of his eyesight to the doctor. He said after the accident, his family brought him to Dr Shveta here, who performed surgery immediately. Later, one more surgery was also conducted on February 18. He said he was now okay and could see with his left eye though he remained almost blind for about two months. Dr Shveta said it was a difficult surgery. During the first surgery, the primary repair of the eye was done when it had been found that the .8 cm iron strip had penetrated the inferior part of the eye, entering the retina into the vitreous of the eyeball. After a month of medication, the patient was operated upon for the second time. The patient had now gained vision. This had been made possible with the high technology machines, she added. |
Time to focus on conservation of water to check its depletion
Nikhila Pant Dhawan Tribune News Service
Bathinda, March 21 Tomorrow is the World Water Day and it is only natural that the city gives a thought to the rampant wastage of water that is happening in the water-starved Bathinda. According to the Government of Punjab, the state, with a total geographical area of 50.36 lakh hectare, has almost 85 per cent area under cultivation, of which 97 per cent area is under irrigation. Since major chunk of land in Punjab is cultivated, soil and water in the state are under tremendous stress. And hence, according to reports, 80 per cent of the total blocks in the state are now under over-exploited category. According to statistics, at present, the volume of water drawn from different resources is approximately 60 million litres per day (MLD) and the gross per capita supply of water is 283 litre per capita per day (LPCD). The gross per capita consumption includes physical and non-physical losses. If losses, which are assumed to be 40 per cent of the supply, are deducted, the net per capita consumption reduces to 170 LPCD. The gross water demand calculated by the Feedback Ventures Private Limited in a detailed project report for water supply System, is projected to be 58.73 MLD in the year 2021, 66.72 in 2025 and 78.04 in 2031. “Apart from the reasons that the government lists for the wastage of water, there are numerous other ways in which the city residents waste water. Washing of cars, porches and leaving the fresh water taps on result in wastage of a lot of water. One can see water flowing all the day long from taps installed on the roadsides by the government. We, collectively, turn a blind eye to all these activities. We think the water that is being supplied to our house is ours and it is our prerogative whether we want to conserve it or waste it,” says an official of the Department of Water Supply and Sanitation while talking to the Bathinda Tribune on the condition of anonymity. “About 32.27 million litre of water is supplied to various parts of Bathinda everyday . Although we don't calculate how much water is wasted, it is certain that with approaching summers, the demand for water rises in the city so does the wastage," says Jagdev Singh, XEN, in-charge of Water Supply System in Bathinda. |
Firms scoop up skilled students
Bathinda, March 21
This placement drive was open only for the students who were being trained under the Punjab Skill Training for Employment Potential (P-Step) programme. As many as 80 students from Rajindra College and 120 students from government colleges across Moga, Muktsar and Fazilka took part in the placement drive. Talking about the initiative, human resource development manager, Punjab Infotech, Nitika Sharma said, “The P-Step programme is all about the personality and skill development of the students of government colleges.” “The programme, run by the Government of Punjab, is based on the notion that while the private colleges put in efforts to train their students for the highly-competitive job market, the government colleges fail to do so. So, the government has started this programme to hone the skills of the students to increase their employment potential.” Punjab Infotech is the mediating firm or the nodal agency that works for the Department of Higher Education and government colleges. “The government is ready to invest in students and is also sponsoring the course for the students. The fee of the course is `7,000 per student but the fee of the students selected under the P-Step will be borne by the government. And hence, the government is sponsoring the training of 80 students each from the 23 government colleges across the state,” Sharma added. To select the students for the P-Step programme, a pre-assessment test was organised in September last year, under the vigilance of the college authorities. Sharma clarified, “Out of the 80 selected students, 25 per cent seats are reserved for the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes and 50 per cent for girl students.” Talking about the placement drive, Dr GS Brar from the Department of Physics at the Rajindra College, who was also coordinating the programme in the college, said, “There were three rounds of interviews to screen the students. While Idea-Spice offered jobs in the BPO sector, the Future Group-Big Bazaar offered jobs in the retail sector and Eureka Forbes under the marketing profile. About 90 per cent of students who had appeared for the placement drive have been selected by the companies.” What is P-Step? What does the course cover? |

Weather’s mood swing keeps residents guessing
Bathinda, March 21 The sudden mood swing of the weather, being experienced in the region for the last two days, was a reverberation of the western disturbances (WD) that had developed around the Jammu & Kashmir region. The change in weather conditions also forced the mercury to take the southward path as the temperature plummeted considerably during the last two days, giving the feel of February in March. The region experienced a dip in temperature by about 10 degree Celsius at the minimum as well as the maximum levels during the two days. The maximum temperature recorded on Wednesday was 23.4 degree Celsius, nearly 10 degree Celsius lower than Monday, as per the agri-met department of the Punjab Agriculture University (PAU), regional station, Bathinda. The day’s minimum temperature was 8.2 degree Celsius, about 10 degree Celsius lower than yesterday. The wind speed on Wednesday was 7.5 km per hour. It may be mentioned that the week began on a warm note on Monday when the mercury started hovering well above the 30 degree Celsius mark showing the first signs of summer. The dust-laden winds have been causing inconvenience not only to the drivers of two-wheelers but also the rest of the city by making breathing difficult. This ‘unwanted’ weather may continue for the next one to two days till the WD abate, sources in the weather room said on Wednesday. Weathermen, on Tuesday, had predicted the possibility of strong surface winds prevailing for the next two to three days. |
