Bathinda, March 12 The jeweller's daughter, Payal (22) and daughter-in-law Sunita Rani (24) are battling for life at the local Civil Hospital. The condition of Payal is said to be serious. All the five family members were returning from a Sirsa- based dera where they attended a religious discourse at night and left for Bathinda in a Chevrolet Spark car. The car collided head-on with another vehicle near Sainewala village on the Bathinda-Dabwali road, around 10 kilometres from Bathinda. Pali Mashana of Sangat Sahara who visited the place of the accident at around 6 am said all the five family members were lying in a pool of blood in the badly mangled car. The car collided head-on with a Tata Safari bearing the registration number of Jharkhand. He said that a large number of people from Bathinda attended the religious discourse at Sirsa and were returning in a convoy of different vehicles. Those travelling behind the car involved in the accident too came out of their vehicles and helped in taking out the injured from the damaged remains of the car, Pali said. The injured were rushed to the Civil Hospital, Bathinda, where three of them, including the jeweller, his son and the woman Som Lata, were declared dead. The daughter received serious head injuries and is undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital. As the news of the accident spread, a pall of gloom descended over the busy Post Office bazaar. LPG shortage irks residents
Bathinda, March 12 A large number of people, most of them from villages situated in the periphery, were seen standing in a queue near the Model Town Phase-III today. The customers said they had been making rounds of the gas agencies for the last many days. They said that the onset of the marriage season has lead to a sudden increase in the use of domestic LPG gas cylinders for commercial purposes. Domestic gas is used most of the time during the marriage parties held at residential or commercial sites in the city. "The domestic gas supply is diverted for commercial use as it is more economical than the commercial cylinder. A domestic gas cylinder costs Rs 420 while the commercial cylinder costs more than Rs 1300," said Gurpal Singh, a resident of Jodhpur village. Gurpal Singh said he has been making rounds of the gas agency for the last three days and today, after waiting for over one and half hours in the morning, he has been told to come again after 1 pm. "Now I am standing here for the last 45 minutes but nobody turned up to distribute the gas cylinders," said Gurpal Singh. There were many others who expressed a similar view. Pawan Kumar, who came from local Gaushala, said the gas agency owners have refused to register his booking and he too had been making rounds of the place for the last few days. The owner of Jagdeep Gas Agency, whose employees were supposed to distribute the gas cylinders at Model Town-Phase-III, denied having any problem with those customers who book their cylinders well on time. The gas agency owner said the problem arises only when the supply of gas cylinders is disrupted by the oil companies. But he maintained that there has been no such problem so far. |

Hike in working hours opposed
Bathinda, March 12 A copy of the representation stated that the government is proposing one hour 20 minutes more in the working hours of the teachers with effect from the 2012-13 session. The teachers said any move to increase the
working hours of the teachers will go against the teachers who have been teaching the students with dedication. The general secretary said though the decision is yet to be implemented, the teachers working in the Kendriya Vidyalaya schools are anxious over the implementation of any such decision. He pointed out that these teachers have already been working for more than the stipulated 6 hours 10 minutes as the teacher to student ratio in most of the Kendriya Vidyalaya schools is almost 1:50 instead of 1:35, as per the RTE (Right to Education Gazette of India 2009. The teachers, he added, are already working 43 per cent more than what they are required to. Many of these teachers have produced excellent results and the passouts of these schools are now employed with various reputed organisations all over the world, said the teachers. Most of the students of these schools are wards of army men who remain away from their families most of the times and the teachers take the pains to continuously render their services to impart education to their children. The teachers said most of the Kendriya Vidyalaya schools are situated in far flung areas and teachers have to travel for more than an hour to reach their respective working places on time. The teachers said the government and the decision making authorities must consider the exemplary services being rendered by these teachers while deciding any move to increase their working hours.
