Jalandhar February 26
A few days after the attack on a migrant labourer in which his left arm was badly damaged, another migrant labourer was attacked last night in the Focal Point area here. The motorcycle-borne miscreants took away cash and a mobile phone from the victim.

The victim, Somnath, a daily wage labourer in a factory, told the police that on Saturday night he was going home from the factory on his bicycle. When he reached near the Gujja Peer locality, two motorcycle-borne youths rammed their bike in his cycle and he fell down.

Somnath said one of the miscreants took out a sharp-edged weapon and asked him to hand them over cash and other valuables. They then forcibly snatched Rs 2,500 and a mobile phone from him and fled from the spot.

Fortunately, Somnath sustained only minor bruises in the attack.

Parmod Kumar Yadav, district president of the Purvanchal Mahasabha, said the police should increase patrolling in the industrial area for the security of migrant labourers. Just a few days had passed when a migrant labourer, Chandan, was attacked and he was still undergoing treatment in a hospital. “We have met the Deputy Commissioner for seeking financial help for Chandan’s treatment and the DC has assured us that he will definitely provide him help from government funds after the poll code of conduct comes to an end in March,” Yadav claimed.

Jalandhar, February 26
The gram rozgar sevaks (GRS), working under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS), are up in arms against the district administration for not giving them their salaries of the past five months.

While the administration claims that it has terminated the services of the employees, the gram rozgar sevaks say that they were made to do the election duty till recently. A memorandum in this regard was handed over to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) by the MNREGS employees.

The issue pertains to the month of January when the services of 20 sevaks were terminated all of sudden. Their services were terminated at a time when the election code of conduct was in place in the state.

Talking to Jalandhar Tribune, the employees said the DC stated that since their contract was terminated on July 31, 2011, hence they would get no salary. “If in any case our contract was terminated in July, then why did the DC sanctioned Rs 3,200 salary for August and September. And till date we were made to work, while many of our other colleagues are still deployed on election duty,” they said.

The employees said the administration should ensure to give them salary for the past five months. “Even earlier also we had brought this issue to the notice of the officers concerned, but to no avail,” they added.

Meanwhile, it also came to the fore that the administration would soon issue advertisements for filling the vacant posts under the MNREGS in the district. Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti was not available for comments.

Barbara Gajdarska, a university student from Karakow (heritage city of Poland), stole the show by performing exotic Punjabi folk dance. “I am impressed with the high spirit (chardikala) of Punjabis and enjoy sharing the joys of the Punjab heritage by doing bhangra in Poland and Punjab,” remarked Barbara.

“The PCPC has been inviting international folk delegations to the folk festival since 2008 to highlight the Punjabi folklore and Kapurthala heritage globally and enhance global educational cultural exchanges through multicultural extravaganzas,” declared Dr Davinder Singh Chhina, festival Director and international member of the ISCA, Denmark, while addressing the audience.

Theatre night held in memory of playwright Dr Gursharan Singh

Jalandhar, February 26
Heart-touching dialogues by artistes were heard and an attempt to shake the corrupt system in the society was witnessed at the grand theatre night at the Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Hall here yesterday. An annual event, the plays were held by the Punjab Lok Sabhyacharak Kala Manch.

The play, “Hawai Gole”, which evoked the parental emotions of the audience, was indeed a slap on the corrupt system of the society and the lust for earning more money, even if that means snatching away somebody’s life.

The play was written by Dr Gursharan Singh, in whose memory the theatre night was organised.

The play, enacted by members of the Chandigarh School of Drama, highlighted how the protagonist suffers due to the business of making and selling fake medicines as he loses his son to the rampant corrupt practice.

“Mera puttar mar gaya, tusi haso na, kal tusi vi ho sakde ho,” the mere cries of the protagonist were enough to make the gathering in the jam-packed hall realise the gravity of the situation. In one such scene, he says, “I had gone to buy medicine for my son, but I bought poison and killed my child.” The play evoked a good response as the audience responded well to the heart-touching dialogues of the artistes.

Another play, “Court Martial”, written by Swadesh Deepak, was directed by Dr Ankur Sharma under the banner of the Young Versatile Artistes’ Association (YUVAA). The play spoke at length about the feudal system, which still has its roots among all of us.

As the name suggests, the play was a story of a Scheduled Caste jawan, who after being harassed by his senior shoots him and injures another. The play has been staged earlier too in the city but this time the audience witnessed a directorial change in it.

Director of the play Dr Ankur Sharma said, “We brought changes in terms of script, scenes, light and sound effects and much more. Last time we had started the play with the soliloquy of the presiding officer of the court martial, Col Surat Singh, but this time it was taken in the last stages of the play. The play is basically a story in flashback.”

The nightlong plays, which started yesterday night, concluded at 5 am today. An annual event, it is held every year on the eve of Republic Day on January 25, but this time owing to elections, it was postponed to February.

For the last 28 years, this event had been jointly held by theatre artiste Dr Gursharan Singh and member of the Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Hall Committee Amolak Singh.

Among other plays staged during the night was “Jajbeya de Aar Par”, written by ace theatre personality Kewal Dhaliwal of the Azad Rang Manch. The play dealt with the role of policemen and their responsibility of duty, which at times has some feelings attached to it as well.

The other plays were “Gagan Damama Bajiyo”, written by Piyush Mishra, “Jujhe bina hal koi na”, written by Amolak Singh, and “Kirti” by Samuel John.

With competition getting stiffer, students bank on internet for practice assignments
Deepkamal Kaur
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, February 25
With competition among students of all classes getting stiffer and parents themselves finding little time to help their children with extra questions during examination, question banks available on the internet have come handy.

Several websites on the internet have downloadable practice assignments for all subjects starting from Class I for students of CBSE and ICSE schools. Most parents have installed printers with their home PCs especially to meet such needs of their wards so that they can simply take printouts of readymade assignments and hand out the same to their children to test their preparation on various relevant topics.

While some sites having complete package with syllabi of all subjects with illustrative explanation of each concept and question banks are paid, there are some free sites as well. The parents tell that there are a plethora of sites for downloading English grammar and mathematical problems of all levels.

Arvind Kalsi, who has his son in Class VIII, said, “When we were students, the Tata Mc Graw Hill science question banks or Wren and Martin English grammar books were what we referred to. Times have changed. I have subscribed to a website meritnation.com from where my son himself downloads practice assignments of various subjects from time to time.”

Harpreet Bakshi, who has her son in Class XII, said while his son was preparing for engineering tests through a private tutorial, he depends on the question bank available on CBSE website for the forthcoming board examination.
