A 35-year-old jail inmate Kulwant Singh attempted to commit suicide today by setting himself ablaze. He was immediately rushed to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital. He suffered more than 50 per cent burn injuries. Doctors said his condition was critical as most of his vital organs have been damaged.

Kulwant, who is under treatment at the hospital said he was taking a nap when fire broke out suddenly. “But I cannot say how all this happened because I was sleeping then,” he said. According to information, Kulwant was lodged in the Amritsar Central jail about a year back by the State Operational Cell and he was booked under Section 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act. He was kept in special Barrack no 19.

At about 4.30 pm, as per routine he did not come out of his barrack with his fellow inmates. “The jail guard on duty got suspicious when he did not accompany his fellow inmates. Before he could enquire about him, loud shrieks were heard from his barrack. All those present rushed to the spot to find that Kulwant was half burnt by then. He was taken to the hospital,” said Jail Superintendent Rashpal Singh.

Jail officials said he had attempted to kill himself. “Even as the exact cause of this incident is not certain, yet it appears that he had attempted to immolate himself with the help of an angithi (a traditional fire pot), apparently, because of being under depression as he had been charged with serious allegations under the Arms Act,” said Rashpal Singh. Kulwant was an introvert by nature and didn't mix with his fellow inmates.

Sex detection tests
Licence of ultrasound centre suspended

Amritsar, February 11
The health department has suspended the licence of Sigma Ultrasound centre for allegedly conducting sex-determination tests. Besides, the proceedings for its cancellation have also been initiated and the health department has issued a show-cause notice to the centre’s owner Dr Sanjiv Sharma. The department has also called for his explanation that why the licence of the centre should not be cancelled.

The centre was found guilty of improper record keeping and conducting tests to determine the sex of the foetus by a team of doctors led by Assistant Civil Surgeon.

Civil Surgeon Dr Manjit Singh Randhawa said during investigations the role of trained midwives has come under the scanner who used to send “clients” to centre through the middlemen.

In this case, Jaspal Kaur, a midwife had got the sex determination test of a woman, Paramjit Kaur, who was admitted to a private hospital done from the centre after her condition deteriorated after abortion, conducted at the Sigma centre. Jaspal had allegedly conducted the abortion at her residence. A case had already been registered against Jaspal Kaur and another midwife Kulwinder Kaur in this regard on the basis of the complaint of the health department officials.

“On the basis of the investigations we have decided to write to Punjab Medical Council to cancel the registration of trained midwives with immediate effect as the health department now has proper staff involving ANMs and infrastructure to keep the record of pregnant women and save the mother child,” said Randhawa.

“We have given the motorcycle number of the middleman who had taken the two pregnant women, including Paramjit Kaur to the centre, to the police and we are waiting for a response from them,” Randhawa said.

It is for the second time that the centre has been indicted by the health authorities for such activity. Earlier, the machines at the centre were sealed following a complaint from Satnam Kaur, a resident of Jagdev Kalan village, in 2010. Satnam had refused to abort her child against the wishes of her husband and the in-laws.

Satnam Kaur had alleged that the sex determination test on her was conducted at the said centre after which her husband and in-laws had started pressurising her to get the child aborted. The then state health minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla had intervened into the matter to get action initiated against the centre. Following the sealing of Sigma centre, there are several more ultrasound centres which are under the scanner.

Amritsar, February 11
For the die-hard romantics already running crazy to find ways to express their love for the special someone, Valentine’s Day is no less than an annual festival, a day to celebrate love as if there was no tomorrow. While that special someone may vary from person to person, the spirit remains the same.

For Khushi Pradhan (18), a student of BBKDAV, who loves to spend the entire day with her dog, Mojo, the two-year-old pug is her special someone. “I buy gifts for him, pamper him a lot and spend time with him. We connect emotionally and I believe he is better than a boyfriend,” she says.

Another person who celebrates love differently is Maninder Davar, “I will be with my grandparents this Valentine’s Day. My nana (maternal grandfather) is 103-year-old and I celebrate the day pampering him. Just being with them is an expression of how much I love them.”

PK Jaiswar/tns

Amritsar, February 11
To provide free and quality education to the children of the drug-infested Maqboolpura area, the Citizen Forum Vidya Mandir has decided to award scholarships to 20 girls from the area to enable them to continue their studies.

Brij Bedi, co-founder of the school said the idea was to provide education to as many children as possible. It came to our notice that many children especially girls from the locality, infamously known as the locality of widows, could not continue their studies for want of funds. “So, we decided to provide financial help to such poor and deserving girls by way of distributing monthly scholarships worth Rs 250 each,” Bedi said. He said a committee will also be formed which to scrutinise candidates and recommend the names of deserving students for the scholarship. He said the interested children can also contact him or his colleagues in the school. "Even those children, who wanted to study but could not go to school due to adverse family conditions can also approach us," said Bedi. Hopefully, this will help fulfil the aspirations of some of the children of the area.

Maqboolpura is synonyms for drug peddling and bootlegging. It got its name as the locality of widows as a number of families lost their bread winners to drug addiction with various authorities, including the police and the health department failing to take any corrective measures.

Brij Bedi, an industrialist-turned-social worker, along with Master Ajit Singh, a government school teacher, took up the cudgels to provide free education to children from families of drug abusers.

Started with just 22 students in the late 90's, the school has the strength of over 450 students and their students are now getting higher education in the government schools as well as technical institutes.
